Sophorolipids were biosynthesized using a strain of yeast, Torulopsis bombicola ATCC22214. It has been reported that this yeast gives the highest yields for the production of biosurfactant sophorolipids. Hence, this yeast was used in this study. One of the objectives of this study is to increase the yield of the sophorolipid synthesis. To meet this end, basic culture medium was formulated on the basis of literature research to-date. When this medium was used, the increase in yield from 15% to 150% was observed compared to using the media in the literature. To examine how the interfacial characteristics of sophorolipids change with substrate, glucose (the first carbon source) was maintained in the media and after being cultured for three days, the second carbon sources such as alkanes, vegetable oils, alcohols or organic acids were added. The whole broth was extracted twice with ethyl acetate and the extract was analyzed by thin layer chromatograhy(TLC). After qualitative analyses by TLC, surface tensions of sophorolipids were measured by the Wilhelmy plate method and critical micelle concentration(CMC) was determined using these surface tension data. Also, interfacial tensions were measured by the spinning drop method and emulsions of the three-component water/decane/sophorolipid system were tested. Sophorolipids were effective and efficient in terms of surface tension reduction and CMC, but they were ineffective as emulsifiers because emulsions were separated within 30 minutes.
The objective of this study was investigate the characteristic of biosurfactant produced from the isolated strain. The strain was isolated from soil samples and identified as Bacillus sp. TBM 911-5 by physiological characteristics and the partial nucleotide sequence analysis of 16S rDNA. We measured the surface tension every 6 hours for 80 hours. The surface tension of the culture filtrate of Bacillus sp. TBM 911-5 was decreased to 29 mN/m. Biosurfactant concentration was determined by diluting the culture filtrate until the critical micelle concentration (CMC). The biosurfactant emulsified hydrocarbons, vegetable oil and crude oil. Using soybean oil as substrate, the maximum emulsification activity and stability was obtained from the biosurfactant. The biosurfactant produced from Bacillus sp. TBM 911-5 had strong properties as an emulsifying agent and an emulsion-stabilizing agent.

Over the past years techniques for non-linear analysis have been enhanced significantly via improved solution procedures, extended finite element techniques and increased robustness of constitutive models. Nevertheless, problems remain, especially for real world structures of softening materials like concrete. The softening gives negative stiffness and risk of bifurcations due to multiple cracks that compete to survive. Incremental-iterative techniques have difficulties in selecting and handling the local peaks and snap-backs. In this contribution, an alternative method is proposed. The softening diagram of negative slope is replaced by a saw-tooth diagram of positive slopes. The incremental-iterative Newton method is replaced by a series of linear analyses using a special scaling technique with subsequent stiffness/strength reduction per critical element. It is shown that this event-by-event strategy is robust and reliable. First, the model is shown to be objective with respect to mesh refinement. Next, the example of a large-scale dog-bone specimen in direct tension is analyzed using an isotropic version of the saw-tooth model. The model is capable of automatically providing the snap-back response. Subsequently, the saw-tooth model is extended to include anisotropy for fixed crack directions to accommodate both tensile cracking and compression strut action for reinforced concrete. Three different reinforced concrete structures are analyzed, a tension-pull specimen, a slender beam and a slab. In all cases, the model naturally provides the local peaks and snap-backs associated with the subsequent development of primary cracks starting from the rebar. The secant saw-tooth stiffness is always positive and the analysis always 'converges'. Bifurcations are prevented due to the scaling technique.

Five novel amphoteric surfactants of N-acyloxyethylcarboxybetaine series were synthesized via Schotten-Baumman reaction between five acid chlorides containing 10, 12, 14, 16 and 18 carbon atoms in their N-alkyl groups and dimethylaminoethanol to give the intermediate products, 2-dimethylaminoethylalkanoates(2). Quaternization of these products(2) was permitted to from 2-(acyloxyethyldimethylammonic)- acetates(3), whose structures were identified by elemental analysis, IR spectrophotometry and $^1Hnmr$ spectrometry. The yield of the final products was shown in the range of 77-80% based on the intermediate products. The surface tension of the aqueous solution of (3) was measured, and the critical micelle concentrations (cmc) were shown in the range of $2.1\;{\times}\;10^{-3}\;-\;3.3\;{\times}\;10^{-4}mol/l$, and the surface tension at cmc was 28-36 dyne/cm. Cmc was lowered gradually by the increment of the length of N-alkyl ester containing group. The isoelectric point was shown in the range of 4.44-5.20. It showed a tendency to lean toward the acidic site and its range was broadened as increase of the hydrophobic group length. A linear relationship between log cmc and the number of carbon atoms(N) in the hydrophobic alkyl chain was shown in the relative equation of log cmc=-1.75-0.1N, and the contribution rate of N on the standard free energy change in micellization, ${\bigtriangleup}({\bigtriangleup}G^{\circ}m)/{\bigtriangleup}N$, was calculated as -0.23 RT.

In this study, structural analysis is executed about cone structure of KSL V-1 2nd
stage KMS(kick motor support structure) which is designed for support the load
developed from 2nd stage kick motor. KMS is consisted of cone structure and truss
structure which is designed for supporting load developed from 2nd stage payload.
Applied loads to cone structure are tension load by inertia developed from kick motor
and compression load developed from kick motor. Also, shear and bending load are
developed according to flight condition. In this study, structural analysis of cone
structure is executed under several load condition which may be applied to cone
structure. Also, structural analysis with two finite element model is performed
according to pressure vent scheme. In result of structural analysis, critical load
condition is equivalent tension load with cut-out.
Water-lipid soluble multivitamin formulations were widely used to reduce the disease and stress of animals as husbandry has made a remarkable progress in recent. But the efficiency of these formulations is far from satisfactory. So, this study was attempted to develop the physically and chemically stable and useful multivitamin o/w emulsion. Multivitamin o/w emulsion composed of water, soybean oil (10%, v/v), vitamin A, D, E, K, $B_2,\;B_6,\;B_{12}$ and panthenol. To make a stable o/w emulsion, the egg lecithin (2%, w/v) and glycerin (2.5%, w/v) were used for emulsifier and thickening agent, respectively. The oil in water emulsion system was manufactured by microfluidizer and the physicochemical stability of this emulsion was evaluated. The average particle size and interfacial tension were measured. From the result of interfacial tension tested, critical micelle concentration of the egg lecithin was 0.5% (w/v) and optimal concentration for the preparation of emulsion was 2% (w/v). The mean particle size was about $0.6\;{\mu}m$ which was suitable for injections. Short-term accelerated stability as physical stability study was tested by centrifuging and freeze-thawing the emulsion samples. The additions of vitamins resulted in the increment of particle size and reduction of physical stability of emulsion. But it is not an enormous problem for the stability of emulsion. Also, we have performed the long-period preservation stability test for the vitamins. All vitamins were analysed by HPLC. The result of storage under $4^{\circ}C$ and dark conditions demonstrated that all vitamins were maintained stable at least 16 weeks, except for vitamin $B_{12}$.

Curtain stability without curtain contraction is critical for a successful operation in curtain coating, and this can be influenced by the change in particle dynamics and rheological properties of coating colors. In this study, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) were added to control the rheology of GCC based curtain coating colors. Surface tension was increased slightly with increasing content of cobinder. Shear-thinning of viscosity was more pronounced for the CMC containing GCC coating colors. Complex modulus decreased when small amount of PVA was used as a cobinder, but it increased in other coating colors. Extensional viscosity was increased with increasing of the cobinder content, but CMC was more effective. Results indicate that pigment interaction with PVA is different from that with CMC. Dispersibility of coating colors was improved due to steric stabilization when small amounts of PVA was used, but flocculation occurred by bridging when the amount of PVA was increased. Dispersibility of coating colors was improved when small amount of CMC was added, while flocculation was observed by depletion effect when the concentration of CMC was increased in coating colors. Addition of cobinders at proper levels gave positive effects both in rheological properties and curtain stability. On the other hand, excessive amount of cobinders caused particle flocculation and this resulted in rheological and curtain stablity problems.

Hypoxia, or low oxygen tension, is a hallmark of the tumor microenvironment. The hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) subunit plays a critical role in the adaptive cellular response of hypoxic tumor cells to low oxygen tension by activating gene-expression programs that control cancer cell metabolism, angiogenesis, and therapy resistance. Phosphorylation is involved in the stabilization and regulation of HIF-1α transcriptional activity. HIF-1α is activated by several factors, including the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) superfamily. MAPK phosphatase 3 (MKP-3) is a cytoplasmic dual-specificity phosphatase specific for extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2 (Erk1/2). Recent evidence indicates that hypoxia increases the endogenous levels of both MKP-3 mRNA and protein. However, its role in the response of cells to hypoxia is poorly understood. Herein, we demonstrated that small-interfering RNA (siRNA)-mediated knockdown of MKP-3 enhanced HIF-1α (not HIF-2α) levels. Conversely, MKP-3 overexpression suppressed HIF-1α (not HIF-2α) levels, as well as the expression levels of hypoxia-responsive genes (LDHA, CA9, GLUT-1, and VEGF), in hypoxic colon cancer cells. These findings indicated that MKP-3, induced by HIF-1α in hypoxia, negatively regulates HIF-1α protein levels and hypoxia-responsive genes. However, we also found that long-term hypoxia (>12 h) induced proteasomal degradation of MKP-3 in a lactic acid-dependent manner. Taken together, MKP-3 expression is modulated by the hypoxic conditions prevailing in colon cancer, and plays a role in cellular adaptation to tumor hypoxia and tumor progression. Thus, MKP-3 may serve as a potential therapeutic target for colon cancer treatment.

In this study, cationic gemini surfactants were synthesized by increasing the length of the hydrophobic chain and using 1,4-butanediol as a spacer, and the result was confirmed by $^1H-NMR$. The synthesized surfactant was a white powder, and Kraffts point was below $0^{\circ}C$. Surface tension measurements revealed that the evaluated critical micelle concentration (c.m.c) was $1.8{\times}10^{-3}{\sim}6.5{\times}10^{-4}mol/L$ with a surface tension of 22.5~26.1 dyne/cm at the c.m.c. The initial foam height for CG 14-6E-14 estimated by Ross-Miles method was 16 cm and after 5 minutes the height was 14 cm. It was confirmed that the initial foam force and foam stability were the highest. The foam test and emulsion stability of synthesized gemini cationic surfactants were also compared to those of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), a commoly used surfactant.

Background: Ventilator dependency constitutes a major problem in the intensive care setting. Malnutrition is considered a major determinant of extubation failure, however, attention has been attracted to modulating carbon dioxide production through decreasing carbohydrate loading and increasing the percent of fat in enteral feeds. The detected interrelation between substrate oxidation and ventilation outcome became the base of several research to determine the appropriate composition of the nonprotein calories of diet in ventilated patients. Purpose: We aimed to assess the effect of high-fat dietary modification and nutritional status on ventilatory and final outcomes of pediatric intensive care. Methods: Fifty-one ventilated children (1 month to 12 years of age) with pulmonary disease who could be enterally fed, in the Cairo University Pediatric intensive care unit, were divided into 2 groups: group A included 25 patients who received isocaloric high-fat, low-carbohydrate diet; group B included 26 patients who received standard isocaloric diet. Comprehensive nutritional assessment was done for all patients. Results: Group A had a significant reduction in carbon dioxide tension, but no similar reduction in the duration or level of ventilatory support. Assisted minute ventilation was predicted by weight-for-age and caloric intake rather than the type of diet. Poor nutritional status was associated with higher mortality and lower extubation rates. Mild hypertriglyceridemia and some gastrointestinal intolerance were significant in group A, with no impact on the adequacy of energy or protein delivery. Conclusion: The high-fat enteral feeding protocol may contribute to reducing carbon dioxide tension, with mild hypertriglyceridemia and negligible gastrointestinal intolerance as potential adverse effects. Optimization of nutritional status rather than dietary modification may improve ventilatory and survival outcomes in critically ill-ventilated children.
