Niobium nitride (NbN) superconducting thin films with the thickness of 100 and 400 nm have been deposited on the surfaces of silicon oxide/silicon substrates using a sputtering method. Their superconducting properties have been evaluated in terms of the transition temperature, critical magnetic field, and critical current density. In addition, the NbN films were patterned in a line with a width of $10{\mu}m$ by a reactive ion etching (RIE) process for their characterization. This study proves the applicability of the standard complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) process in the fabrication of superconducting thin films without considerable degradation of superconducting properties.

Assembly line balancing problem is known as one of difficult combinatorial optimization problems. This problem has been solved with linear programming, dynamic programming approaches. but unfortunately these approaches do not lead to efficient algorithms. Recently, genetic algorithm has been recognized as an efficient procedure for solving hard combinatorial optimization problems, but has a defect that requires long-run time and computational complexties to find the solution. For this reason, we adapt a new method called the Critical Node Method that is intuitive, easy to understand, simple for implementation. Fuzzy set theory is frequently used to represent uncertainty of information. In this paper, to treat the data of real world problems we use a fuzzy number to represent the duration and Critical Node Method based heuristic procedure is developed for solving fuzzy assembly line balancing problem.

Herein the water film was introduced to the hydrophilic area on the line patterned surface to solve the contradiction caused by surface roughness (high different wettability has advantage to control the droplet but high roughness for that high wettability difference causes obstruction of droplet moving). Thus the droplet on the water film could not be hindered to line direction but restricted to orthogonal direction, effectively. In addition, droplet behaviors according to droplet volume and line thickness were studied. Droplet fell off the line with narrowing the interface between the droplet and the water film on the line. When the droplet fell off the line, the plate angle was designated as a critical plate angle and it used as an indicator of surface capability to control the droplet. As a result critical plate angle increases as droplet volume decreases and line thickness increases.

Voltage instability is a phenomenon that could occur in power systems due to stressed conditions. The result would be an occurrence of voltage collapse leading to total blackout of the system. Therefore, voltage collapse prediction is an important part of power system planning and operation, and can help ensure that voltage collapse due to voltage instability is avoided. Line outages in power systems may also cause voltage collapse, thereby implying the contingency in the system. Contingency problems caused by line outages have been identified as one of the main causes of voltage instability in power systems. This paper presents a new technique for contingency ranking based on voltage stability conditions in power systems. A new line stability index was formulated and used to identify the critical line outages and sensitive lines in the system. Line outage contingency ranking was performed on several loading conditions in order to identify the effect of an increase in loading to critical line outages. Correlation studies on the results obtained from contingency ranking and voltage stability analysis were also conducted, and it was found that line outages in weak lines would cause voltage instability conditions in a system. Subsequently, using the results from the contingency ranking, weak areas in the system can be identified. The proposed contingency ranking technique was tested on the IEEE reliability test system.
Localized wind events, in the form of tornadoes and downbursts, are the main cause of the large number of failure incidents of electrical transmission line structures worldwide. In this study, a numerical model has been developed to study the behaviour of self-supported transmission lines under various tornado events. The tornado wind fields used were based on a full three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics analysis that was developed in an earlier study. A three-dimensional finite element model of an existing self-supported transmission line was developed. The tornado velocity wind fields were then used to predict the forces applied to the modelled transmission line system. A comprehensive parametric study was performed in order to assess the effects of the location of the tornado relative to the transmission line under F2 and F4 tornado wind fields. The study was used to identify critical tornado configurations which can be used when designing transmission line systems. The results were used to assess the sensitivity of the members' axial forces to changes in the location of the tornado relative to the transmission line. The results were then used to explain the behaviour of the transmission line when subjected to the identified critical tornado configurations.
Most domestic fossil power plant have exceeded 100,000 hours of operation with the severe operating condition. Among the critical components of fossil power plant, high temperature steam pipe system have had a many problems and damage from unstable displacement behavior because of frequent start up and shut down. In order to prevent the serious damage and failure of the critical pipe system in fossil power plant, 3-dimensional displacement measurement system were developed for the on-line monitoring system. 3-D Measurement system was developed with using the LVDT type sensor and rotary encoder type sensor, this system was installed and operated on the real power plant successfully. In the future time, network system of on-line diagnosis for critical pipe will be designed.
Autonomous agents need considerable computational resources to perform rational decision-making. The complexity of decision-making becomes prohibitive when large number of agents are present and when decisions have to be made under time pressure. One of approaches in time-critical domains is to respond to an observed condition with a predefined action. Although such a system may be able to react very quickly to environmental conditions, predefined plans are of less value if a situation changes and re-planning is needed. In this paper we investigate strategies intended to tame the computational burden by using off-line computation in conjunction with on-line reasoning. We use performance profiles computed off-line and the notion of urgency (i.e., the value of time) computed on-line to choose the amount of information to be included during on-line deliberation. This method can adjust to various levels of real-time demands, but incurs some overhead associated with iterative deepening. We test our framework with experiments in a simulated anti-air defense domain. The experiments show that the off-line performance profiles and the on-line computation of urgency are effective in time-critical situations.

This paper describes a new ultra-fast contingency screening algorithm for on-line TSA without time simulation. All machines are represented in a classical model and the stability index is defined as the ratio between acceleration power during a fault and deceleration power after clearing the fault. Critical clustering of machines is done based on the stability index, and the power-angle curve of the critical machines is drawn assuming that the angles of the critical machines increase uniformly, while those of the non-critical ones remain constant. Finally, the critical clearing time (CCT) is computed using the power-angle curve. The proposed algorithm is tested on the KEPCO system comprised of 900-bus and 230-machines. The CCT values computed with the screening algorithm are in good agreement with those computed using the detailed model and the SIME method. The computation time for screening about 270 contingencies is 17 seconds with 1.2 GHz PC.
Multiple studies conducted in the past evaluated the conductor response under one tornado wind field, while the performance of transmission lines under different tornado wind fields still remains unknown. Thus, the objective of this paper is to estimate the variation in the conductor's critical longitudinal and transverse reactions under different tornado wind fields, as well as providing the corresponding critical tornado configurations. The considered full-scale tornadoes are the Spencer, South Dakota, 1998, the Stockton, Kansas, 2005 and the Goshen County, Wyoming, 2009. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations were previously conducted to develop these wind fields. All tornadoes have been rescaled to have a common velocity matching the upper limit of the F2 Fujita scale. Eight conductor systems, each including six spans, are considered in this paper. For each conductor, parametric studies are conducted by varying the location of the three tornado wind fields relative to the tower of interest, therefore the peak reactions associated with each tornado are determined. A semi-analytical closed-form solution, previously developed and validated, is used to calculate the reactions. The study conducted in this paper can be divided into two parts: In the first part, a parametric study considering a wide range of tornado locations is conducted. In the second part, the parametric study focuses on the tornado location leading to the critical tangential velocity on the tower. Based on this extensive parametric study, a critical tornado defined as the Design Tornado and its critical locations, tornado distance R = 125 m, tornado angle 𝜃 = 15° and 30°, are recommended for design purposes.
This paper deals with critical thermal buckling load optimization of symmetrically laminated four layered angle-ply plates with one or two different intermediate line supports. The design objective is the maximization of the critical thermal buckling load and a design variable is the fibre orientation in the layers. The first order shear deformation theory and nine-node isoparametric finite element model are used for the finite element solution of the laminates. The modified feasible direction (MFD) method is used for the optimization routine. For this purpose, a program based on FORTRAN is used. Finally, the numerical analysis is carried out to investigate the effects of location of the internal line supports, plate aspect ratios and boundary conditions on the optimal designs and the results are compared.
