Aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC) is relatively rare, non-neoplastic expansile lesion of bone. The case of a IS-year-old male with a ABC of the left mandibular condyle is presented. Panoramic radiograph showed a unilocular radiolucency with thinned coritces and a subcondylar fracuture which was due to the trauma. Computed tomography (CT) revealed expansile lesion which had similar attenuation soft tissue. The patient was treated surgically including iliac crestal bone graft.

Introduction: Auto-tooth bone graft material consists of 55% inorganic hydroxyapatite (HA) and 45% organic substances. Inorganic HA possesses properties of bone in terms of the combining and dissociating of calcium and phosphate. The organic substances include bone morphogenetic protein and proteins which have osteoinduction capacity, as well as the type I collagen identical to that found in alveolar bone. Auto-tooth bone graft material is useful as it supports excellent bone regeneration capacity and minimizes the possibility of foreign body reaction, genetic diseases and disease transmission. Materials and Methods: Implant placement combined with osteoinductive regeneration, preservation of extraction socket, maxillary sinus augmentation, and ridge augmentation using block type, powder type, and block+powder type autobone graft materialwere performed for 250 patients with alveolar bone defect and who visited the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, College of Dentistry, Dankook University from September 2009 to August 2011. Results: Clinical assessment: Among the 250 patients of auto-tooth bone graft, clinical assessment was performed for 133 cases of implant placement. The average initial stabilization of placed implants was 74 implant stability quotient (ISQ). Radiological assessment: The average loss of crestal bone in the mandible as measured 6 months on the average after the application of prosthesis load was 0.29 mm, ranging from 0 mm to 3.0 mm. Histological assessment: In the histological assessment, formation of new bone, densified lamellated bone, trabecular bones, osteoblast, and planting fixtures were investigated. Conclusion: Based on these results, we concluded that auto-tooth bone graft material should be researched further as a good bone graft material with osteoconduction and osteoinduction capacities to replace autogenous bone, which has many limitations.
Purpose: A number of techniques and materials have been used for periodontal regeneration and bone graft procedures with guided tissue regeneration(GTR) have been suggested as alternatives to osseous surgery in the management of local infra-bony defects. However, the long-term stability and treatment outcome following bone graft procedure of infra-bony defects is poorly documented. The purpose of this study was to assess radiographic change in infra-bony defects over 2 years after bone graft procedures with various graft materials. Material and Methods: Patients attending the department of periodontics of Kyungpook National University Hospital were studied. Patients showed clinical and radiographic evidence of infra-bony defect(s). 44 sites of 34 patients aged 31 to 69 (mean age 48.3) were treated by bone graft procedure with a bone graft material. Baseline and 2-year follow-up radiographs were collected and evaluated for this study. Radiographic assessment includes a bone fill, bone crest change, defect resolution, and % of defect resolution. Pre- and post-treatment differences between variables (maxilla and mandible, defect depth, defect angle, bone graft materials) using the paired t-test were examined. Result: We observed $1.15{\pm}1.95\;mm$ of bone fill, $0.40{\pm}1.19\;mm$ of crestal resorption, $1.55{\pm}1.77\;mm$ of defect resolution, and $40{\pm}44%$ of percentage of defect resolution. Deeper initial defect depth, narrower initial defect angle showed significantly greater bone fill, defect resolution, and % of defect resolution. But no significant difference was observed in graft sites and graft materials. Conclusion: If good oral hygiene maintenance and periodic recall check of patients is assured, bone graft procedure using various graft materials is one of the appropriate treatment modality for regenerative therapy of infra-bony defects.

Statement of problem : There are many articles that showed that the magnetism affected the bone formation around titanium implant. It means that a proper magnetism made the osseointegration improved around the implant. So after additional research on the other effect of magnetism on bone formation in implant therapy, we can conclude its possibility of clinical application on implant treatment. Purpose: The purposes of this study were to find out the intensity of magnetic field where magnetism in the titanium implant specimen inserted into the bone could affect the bone formation, and to discover the possibility of clinical application in the areas of dental implants and bone grafts. Material and method: Ten adult male rabbits(mean BW 2Kg) were used in this study. Titanium implant specimens were surgically implanted on the mesial side of the tibia of rabbits. Neodymium magnets(Magnedisc 500, Aichi Steel Corp. Japan) were placed into the implants of experimental group except control group, just after placement of the titanium implants. At 2, 4 and 8 weeks after the surgery, the animals were sacrificed, specimens were obtained and stained with Hematoxylin-Eosin for light microscopic evaluation and histomorphometric analysis. Conclusion : The results were as follows: 1. In radiographic findings, increased radiopacity downward from crestal bone was observed along the titanium implant specimen at experimental period passed by 2, 4, and 8 weeks in both control and experimental group. 2. In histoiogic findings, increased new bone formation was shown in both control and experimental group through the experiment performed for 2, 4, and 8 weeks. More new bone formation and bone remodeling were shown in experimental group. 3. In histomorphometric analysis, the bone contact ratios were 11.9% for control group and 38.5% for experimental group (p<0.05).

The purpose of this study was to compare the distributing pattern of stress on the finite element models with the different vertical bone level of implant fixture. The two kinds of finite element models were designed according to vertical bone level around fixture ($4.0mm{\times}11.5mm$). The cemented crowns for mandibular first and second molars were made. Three- dimensional finite element model was created with the components of the implant and surrounding bone. Vertical loads were applied with force of 200N distributed within 0.5mm radius circle from the center of central fossa and distance 2mm and 4 mm apart from the center of central fossa. Von-Mises stresses were recorded and compared in the supporting bone, fixtures, abutment screws, and crown. The results were as following : (1) In vertical loading at the center circle of central fossa on model 1 and 2, the difference from vertical bone in implant placement did not affect the stress pattern on all components of implant except for crown. (2) With offset distance incerasing and the bone level of implant decreasing, the concentration of stress occured in the buccal side of long crown, around the buccal crestal bone, and on the fixture- abutment interface. As a conclusion, the research showed a tendency to increase the stress on the supporting bone, fixture and screw under the offset loads when the vertical level of bone around fixture was different. Since the same vertical bone bed has more benefits than the different bone bed around fixtures, it is important to prepare a same vertical level of bone bed for the success of implants under occlusal loads.
Although the purpose of orthodontic treatment is to increase the function and aesthetics of the jaws as well as to increase stability, there are side effects from the treatment itself such as root resorption and alveolar bone resorption. Such resoiption of the apical root is unpredictable and may even proceed into the dentin layer. Once the process has begun, it is irreversible. By evaluating the effects of different oral habits, especially that ef nail biting, and their correlation with the root and the periodontal tissues, the appropriate biomechanics for orthodontic treatment can be taken into consideration. The possibility of root resorption and alveolar bone loss during orthodontic treatment can also be considered. Also, any legal problems that might occur may be pondered as well. Among the male md female patients of the ages 10~15, 63 were chosen as the test group with known nail biting habits at time of examination and within the same age range those without nail biting habits as the control group. The test group was composed of 30 males and 33 females. The control group had 31 males and 32 females. The result from this study were as follows : 1. Of the 63 patients of both the test and control groups, the male-to-female-ratio was 1:1, and had no statistically significant difference in male and female root resorption. 2. In comparing crown length of the test and control groups, no significant difference existed, but in root length, maxillary and mandibular right and left central incisors and mandibular right lateral incisors had a smaller value. (p<0.001) 3. Average crown-to-root ratio of the test group on the periapical view show a noticeably high value for the maxillary and mandibular right and left central incisors and mandibular right and left lateral incisors. (p<0.01) 4. In comparing and evaluating the alveolar bone loss measured from the cemento-enamel junction to the alveolar bone crest, mesial surfaces of the maxillary and mandibular right and left central incisors and distal surface of maxillary right central incisor of the test group showed greater loss of crestal bone than the control. Objectives: Interest in bone graft material has increased with regard to restoration in cases of bone defect around the implant. Autogenous tooth bone graft material was developed and commercialized in 2008. In this study, we evaluated the results of vertical and horizontal ridge augmentation with autogenous tooth bone graft material. Materials and Methods: This study targeted patients who had vertical or horizontal ridge augmentation using AutoBT from March 2009 to April 2010. We evaluated the age and gender of the subject patients, implant stability, adjunctive surgery, additional bone graft material and barrier membrane, post-operative complication, implant survival rate, and crestal bone loss. Results: We performed vertical and horizontal ridge augmentation using powder- or block-type autogenous tooth bone graft material, and implant placement was performed on nine patients (male: 7, female: 2). The average age of patients was $49.88{\pm}12.98$ years, and the post-operative follow-up period was $35{\pm}5.31$ months. Post-operative complications included wound dehiscence (one case), hematoma (one case), and implant osseointegration failure (one case; survival rate: 96%); however, there were no complications related to bone graft material, such as infection. Average marginal bone loss after one-year loading was $0.12{\pm}0.19$ mm. Therefore, excellent clinical results can be said to have been obtained. Conclusion: Excellent clinical results can be said to have been obtained with vertical and horizontal ridge augmentation using autogenous tooth bone graft material.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate marginal bone loss to the bone crest functionally loaded for up to eighteen months and also with regard to other variables of interest. Material and Methods: 135 endosseous implants(GS II, Osstem, South Korea) were placed in 35 patients. The design of GS II implant is straight with the microthread. Radiographic examinations were conducted at baseline (implant loading) and 3, 6, 9, 12 and 18 months after loading. Marginal bone level measurement was made from the reference point to the lowest observed point of contact of the marginal bone with the fixture. The reference point of the fixture was the border between the blasted surface and machined surface of the fixture. Results: Implants were on function for a mean 12.7 months(range, 3?18 months). For the 56 maxillary and 79 mandibular implants, mean marginal bone loss was 0.68 mm and 0.70 mm. Implants placed maxillary posterior area displayed more crestal bone loss than the other position. The difference between mesial and distal bone levels was statistically significant (p<0.05) with respective means of 0.51 mm and 0.62 mm. Also, The difference between bone graft group and no-bone graft group was statistically significant(p<0.05) with respective means of 0.38 mm and 0.66 mm. But no statistically significant influence of sex, type of surgery(one or two stage surgery), the implant length was observed(p>0.05). Conclusion: This study indicates the amount of marginal bone loss around implant has maintained a relative stable during follow-up periods.
In general, labiolingual or buccolingual widths of residual alveolar bone are insufficient in edentulous area, because of alveolar resorption. Horizontal augmentation is bone graft procedure with a view to reinforcing horizontally insufficient bone quantity for installation of implants. The standard method is taking appropriate amount of block bone from intraoral or extraoral autogenous bone, and solid fixation with screws or mini-plate on labial or buccal side of residual alveolar bone. The purpose of this study is to discuss clinical usefulness of horizontal augmentation with autogenous block bone by observation and analysis of course of 41 implants installed to 12 patients by horizontal augmentation in Seoul National University Bundang Hospital from July, 2002 to December, 2005. The mean age of patients is 52.7, from 19 to 70, and the number of men and women is each 2 and 10. Block bone was taken from symphysis, body, ramus of mandible or iliac bone. And 6 types of implants were installed simultaneously or not, the diameters of implants are from 3.3 to 5.5mm, the lengths are from 8 to 15mm. The operator added artificial bone grafting material and optionally covered with membrane. The mean periods of observation after operation and final prosthetics were 28.6 and 17.0 months. As a result, 40 among 41 implants survived, the survival rate was 97.6%. Average 0.9mm crestal resorption was observed at final point of time by periapical view of each patients. Major complication related to the procedure was numbness in 7 patients.

Bitewing and periapical radiographic techniques are used in clinical and epidemiological studies to assess crestal alveolar bone levels. The purpose of the present study investigated relationships between these techniques by assessing alveolar crest location at the same site. Bitewing and periapical radiographs were available from posterior quadrants of 120 subjects. The distance from cemento-enamel junction to the alveolar crest (CEJ -CR) was measured for each proximal surface from the distal of the cuspid to the distal of the second molar. Data were arranged according to the proximal surface examined, and bitewing and periapical measurements were compared using paired tests. The obtained results were as follows; 1. In maxilla, a significant t ratio with a P value of 0.05 or less was reached for 78% and in mandible reached for 39%. 2. Pearson correlations were calculated 32 surfaces (89%) had values below 0.70 and so, data obtained by these techniques can not be used interchangeably on an individual or group basis. 3. In situations where the periapical measure was greater than the bitewing, it ranged up to 20.7% greater with a mean 9.8%. Where the bitewing was greater than periapical, it ranged up to 51. 9% greater, with a mean 18.2%. 4. The percentage difference was greater in maxillary posterior areas than in mandibular molar, premolar areas. A lower prevalence of significant differences was attributed to relatively more simple root and favorable radiographic conditions in mandibular molar and premolar areas. 5. The anatomical limitations imposed on periapical radiographic technique, most often result in somewhat foreshortened radiographic images. This situation would tend to be accentuated by the anatomical restrictions of the hard palate. 6. Consequently, since the significant differences frequently exist between measurements obtained from bitewing and periapical techniques, it is important to define which technique is used.
