  • Purpose: This study examined the factors that can be associated with the appearance of the interproximal papilla. Methods: One hundred and forty-seven healthy interproximal papillae between the maxillary central incisors were examined. For each subject, a digital photograph and periapical radiograph of the interdental embrasure were taken using a 1-mm grid metal piece. The following parameters were recorded: the amount of recession of the interproximal papilla, contact point-bone crest distance, contact point-cemento-enamel junction (CEJ) distance, CEJ-bone crest distance, inter-radicular distance, tooth shape, embrasure space size, interproximal contact area, gingival biotype, papilla height, and papilla tip form. Results: The amount of recession of the interproximal papilla was associated with the following: 1) increase in contact point-bone crest, contact point-CEJ, and CEJ-bone crest distance; 2) increase in the inter-radicular distance; 3) triangular tooth shape; 4) decrease in the interproximal contact area length; 5) increase in the embrasure space size; and 6) flat papilla tip form. On the other hand, the amount of gingival recession was not associated with the gingival biotype or papilla height. In the triangular tooth shape, the contact point-bone crest distance and inter-radicular distance were longer, the interproximal contact area length was shorter, and the embrasure space size was larger. The papilla tip form became flatter with increasing inter-radicular distance and CEJ-bone crest distance. Conclusions: The relative position of the interproximal papilla in healthy subjects was associated with the multiple factors and each factor was related to the others. A triangular tooth shape carries a higher risk of recession of the interproximal papilla because the proximal contact point is positioned more incisally and the bone crest is positioned more apically. This results in an increase in recession of the interproximal papilla and flat papilla tip form.

  • We were to investigate the geomorphological environment of optimum location in the object of Bronze Age's dwelling site (hereinafter called dwelling site) of total of 205 units confirmed in the 'Cheonan Baekseokdong Relic Group' distributed in hill of the uppermost stream part in the watershed of Jangjae stream in Cheonan, Chungnam Province. To do this, we classified the hill of the object of investigation where dwelling sites were distributed as 8 units of slope micro-landforms and again by combining them with the grade of gradient of 5 units subdivided them into ultra-micro-landforms of total 40 units. On the foundation of this, in the viewpoints of 'gradients of each of micro-landforms' analyzed the 'number of dwelling sites' and 'dwelling site distribution density (measure: number of dwelling sites/1000m2) of 'Cheonan Baekseokdong Relic Group'. As the result, the optimum landform environment where the dwelling sites were located were found to be largely 5 units of ultra-micro-landforms - ① flat land of crest flat, ② gentle slope land of crest flat, ③ flat land of crest slope, ④ gentle slope land of crest slope and ⑤ semi-gentle slope land of crest slope. This analyzed material will be used from now on as basic material which can predict the distribution of dwelling sites of Bronze Age men who dwelled in the watershed of Jangjae stream.

  • The purpose of this study is to assume the particular area of hills where it is highly possible for historical site to be buried in the viewpoint of geomorphology and based on this to suggest excavation-recommended area. Namely, this writer is to understand the dwelling site type of ancient people who had resided there at that time for the object of 'Ohnju region urban development business site' (referred as investigation area hereinafter) and considering the characteristics of micro-landform of hills which are distributed in investigation area and is to recommend the area where it is highly possible for historical site to be buried. The result of analysis is like the following. (1) Dwelling site types of ancient people who might have resided in the whole area of investigation region are discovered to be largely 'low hills+wetland' of Type-I and 'alluvial fan(or river terrace+wetland' of Type-II. (2) In investigation area if the area which has high possibility of distribution of historical site namely, excavation-recommended area is looked as based on micro-landform unit of hills, they are Crest slope and Crest flat. Individual area ratios which Crest slope and Crest flat occupies in investigation area are 12.9% and 10.2% respectively and the rankings are 3 and 6 each. And excavation-recommended areas in valley plain(or bottomland) of investigation area are in the vicinity of 'distal end' or 'buried distal end'of small scale alluvial fan.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the location characteristics in which 'large Jar coffin' (hereinafter referred to as 'Jar coffin') distributed in the Yeongsan river basin area in Jeonnam province by means of topographic analysis. 75 Jar coffins (74.3%) in 19 relics (90.5% of total) were found in hill and 26 Jar coffins (25.7%) of two consumption relics (9.5%) were found in floodplain. Among them, 34 (45.3% of total) and 41 (54.7% of total) Jar coffins were found in the Crest surface and Sideslope of hills, respectively. In particular, 26 (34.7%) Jar coffins are mostly located in the Crest flat. This result implies that people at that might be consider the river inundation, and mostly choose hill rather than floodplain when building the Jar coffin. therefore amongtherefore among micro-landform units of the hill, it seems that the 'Crest flat' was the preferred place for the building the Jar coffin at that time.

  • This is to find out geomorphological environment of optimum location for the object of dwelling site of Bronze Age (hereinafter called dwelling site) of total 177 unit confirmed in Yongducheon basin and Onyangcheon basin (hereinafter called investigation-object basin) in Asan-si Chungnam. To do this, hill of investigation-object basin where dwelling sites were confirmed was divided into 11 units of hillslope geomorphological and this was combined with the grade of 5 units of gradient and again subdivided into total 55 units of micro-landforms of Hillslope. Based on this, in the viewpoint of 'gradient of each of micro-landforms' analyzed 'number of dwelling sites' and 'dwelling site distribution density (unit: number of dwelling sites/1000m2)'. As the result, the optimum geomorphological environment where dwelling sites were located was largely confirmed be 5 units(① semi-gentle slope land of crest slope ②gentle slope land of crest slope ③ slope of upper sideslope ④ flat land of crest slope ⑤ flat land of crest flat). It is thought that this analysis data will be used in the future as basic data for the study of predicting distribution of dwelling sites in Bronze Age which might have been buried in the investigation-object basin.

  • High rock-fill embankment is relatively flexible, which makes crest of embankment subject to excessive amplification in displacement due to earthquake loading. To overcome problems related with site response in high embankment, it is essential to evaluate shear-wave velocity profile of the embankment with improved accuracy and reliability. In this aspect, an experimental research was performed to answer how to perform surface-wave tests and to analyze measurements at an embankment site with a sloping ground surface. Unlike flat ground surface, sloping ground may hamper and slow down propagation of surface waves due to multiple reflections and refractions in embankment. To figure out this reasoning for the effect of multiple reflections and refractions due to sloping surface, surface wave tests were performed at a reservoir embankment of Chung-Song in North KyeongSang Province. Parameters involved in surface wave tests at non-flat surface, including source directionality, geometry-related constraint and frequency components in source function, were investigated using field measurements.

  • The purposes of this research are as follows: First, to reconstruct the optimal locational environment of the Bronze Age settlement in Cheonan Baekseok-dong (hereinafter referred to as the study settlement). Second, to identify the priority ranking of the topographical factors that influenced the Bronze Age people when selecting their the settlement location. For these reasons, the topographical factors of the 200 Bronze Age dwellings (hereinafter referred to as dwellings) confirmed in the survey area were analyzed through the ridge's environmental perspective. The results are asfollows: First, the optimal ridge environment of the Bronze Age settlement is largely a sub-ridge in N-S direction (for example, NNW-SSE, N-S, NNESSW), especially at the top (Crest slope, Crest flat) of the south-facing aspect of the ridge. Second, when the Bronze Age dwellers selected a residential location, they carefully considered topographical factors in the following order: (1) the slope direction of the ridge surface, (2) the micro-landform of the ridge, (3) the ridge scale, (4) the ridge direction, and (5) the surface relief. The results of this study could be used as basic data in related fields such as archaeology, quaternary research, and traditional architecture and so on.

  • Some hydromedusae were collected from the coasts of Seogwipo(Jejudo Island), Hoenggando Island and Ilsanhaesuyokjang(Ulsan), Korea on July 11, 1985; July 23, 1990 and July 16, 1994. They were identified into Aequorea coerulescens (Brandt, 1838) of the order Leptomedusae, and Physalia physalis utriculus La Martiniere, 1829 of the Siphonophora, respectively. The unique morphological characteristics of A. coerulescens are smooth even surface of exumbrella, large mouth with 60 highly fringed oral lobes, shallow stomach, 120 simple radial canals and flat beret-shaped bell. In P. physalis utriculus its morphological characteristics are a triangular large pneumatophore with very low or rudimentary crest, a ribbon like long slender main tentacle, siphon-shaped gastrozooid with mouth, finger-shaped dactylozooid and branched gonozooid with gonophores. P. physalia. utriculus is the Pacific form and distinguished from the Atlantic form, P. p. physalis which has a much larger pneumatophore with high crest, numerous large main tentacles, and compact arrangement of basal and ventral cormidia. As a result of this work the Korean hydromedusan fauna consists of 15 species of five orders.

  • Multibeam backscatter strength is dependent not only on seafloor sediment facies but also on changed incidence angle due to the actual bottom slope. Therefore, the correction for actual bottom slope should be considered before the analysis of backscatter strength. This paper demonstrates the backscatter correction technique for the actual incidence angle and ensonified area. The target area is a part of the eastern Yellow Sea with water depths of 46~55 m. The area is located between the sand ridges and covered by large dunes with various bottom slopes. The dunes usually have the gentle slopes of about $1{\sim}3^{\circ}$, but show some steep slopes of $5{\sim}15^{\circ}$ on the crest. The backscatter strength values on the crest range from -34 to -23 dB, assuming that the bottom is flat. However, this study shows that the backscatter strength range was somewhat reduced (-32~-25 dB) after correction for actual bottom slope. In addition, the backscatter imagery was significantly improved; high and low backscatter strength values on the crest due to the actual bottom slope were normalized. The results demonstrate that the correction technique in this study is an effective tool for processing backscatter strength.
