  • A new type of the human TSA homologous gene was cloned from a HeLa cell cDNA and characterized. The gene product consists of 161 amino acids with a molecular mass of 16,900. The TSA homologous protein, as a new 6th member of the human TSA (hTSA VI), exerted a thioldependent peroxidase activity with the use of thioredoxin system as a physiological electron donor. The values of $V_{max}/K_m$ of hTSA VI for $H_2O_2$ and t-butyl hydroperoxide (t-BOOH) were calculated as $5.53{\times}10^{-2}$ and $3.70{\times}10^{-2}$, respectively. This implies that hTSA VI is a peroxidase, which reduces $H_2O_2$ and t-BOOH. The mutation of $Cys^{47}$ to serine resulted in a complete loss of the peroxidase activity. This suggests that $Cys^{47}$ acts as a primary site of catalysis. The analysis of the tryptic digest derived from hTSA VI revealed that the $Cys^{47}$ exists as a free thiol form. Taken together, these results suggest that the TSA homologous protein is a new type of the human family, which exerts thioredoxin-linked peroxidase activity toward $H_2O_2$ and alkyl hydroperoxide.

  • This paper presents the results of a study on the optimal footpad design for vertical climbing on acrylic surfaces with various curvatures used Taguchi methods. For a climbing robot, the adhesion system plays an important role in the climbing process. Only an appropriate adhesion strength will prevent the robot from falling and allow it to climb normally. Therefore, the footpad is a significant parameter for a climbing robot and should be studied. Taguchi methods were used to obtain a robust optimal design, where the design variables were the flat tacky elastomeric shape, area, thickness, and foam thickness of the footpad. Experiments were conducted using acrylic surfaces with various curvatures. An optimized footpad was selected based on the results of the experiments and analysis, and the stability of the wall-climbing robot was verified.

  • Although companies have to concentrate on effort to save cost to survive competition, transportation costs are taking more portions in total sales costs due to globalization in the modern times. It is the reason why Transportation Management System TMS is getting more important. However, it is practically difficult for the system to fit to all of transportation environments and actually many problems are taking place with the system. Therefore, a new idea is necessary to solve such problems fundamentally rather than temporarily or superficially. To do so, if TRIZ, which is a theory that systematically establishes creative ideas on the basis of patent analysis, is employed, it can bring forth a guideline with some creative principles that can be applicable in drawing out innovative ideas based on conceptual shift. The present study aims to propose a methodology of how TRIZ should be applied to solve the problems that happen in TMS as a whole. Particularly, the study focuses on how to design customized TMS system that can be employed for each of different situations in a creative way.

  • The purpose of the study was to examine how changes of women's sexual identity and gender role were expressed in designs of dance costumes by analyzing costumes used in creative dance works. Related articles, dance magazines, Internet information and dance costumes were used for the analysis of various performance cases to express persona and animus of a woman. The results of the study were as follows: 1. As a woman's role, persona, has recently changed into active propensity, dance directors have come to prefer bold and daring image of female dancer to strongly express animus, the masculine inclination of a woman. 2. Female dancers' costumes were frequently associated with daring body exposure such as body painting on half-naked body, to reflect the above and a number of female dancers dressed daringly in masculine style trom head to toe. Also, pants or hot pants instead of skirt were frequently used as dance costumes to symbolize animus. In addition, colors in dance costumes became vivid and bold in comparison to the simple and soft colors used in the past.

  • President Park Geun-hye Administration has established the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning (MSIP) to build a creative economy using Information and Communication Technology (ICT). July 2, 2013, The National Assembly has legislated the special act on the ICT promotion and convergence so called special ICT Act. This special ICT Act has reduced the legal basis through legislative process and departmental agreement. Therefore many experts worried that since the MSIP's key functions and roles are being reduced, there will be a limit to the MSIP's endeavor for the advancement of science technology and the ICT promotion and convergence. The establishment of the Agency, together with the formation of 'IT Strategy Committee', is considered to be one of the core items of the Special Act on ICT. MSIP originally planned to integrate the ICT R&D functions scattered across many governmental organizations, including Korea Communications Agency (KCA), KEIT and Korea Creative Contents Agency (KOCCA), into the Agency to separate the national ICT R&D from private R&D and streamline the process of 'discovery-selection-evaluation-commercialization'. The analytical results in this study are supposed to the establishment of efficient ICT governance systems as the practical strategies to actively cope with the changes of ICT convergence environment. It is also expected to the revision on the special ICT Act in the ICT budget and governance. Therefore, MSIP should cover research and development (R&D) as well as major ICT promotion functions to a creative economy.

  • We have studied superconducting parameters of $MgB_2$ single crystals from reversible magnetization measurements with the magnetic field both parallel and perpendicular to the c-axis of the crystals. The temperature dependence of the London penetration depth, ${\lambda}_{ab}{^{-2}}(T)$, obtained from the Hao-Clem analysis on reversible magnetization, shows a clear discrepancy from single-band theories. It is also found that the anisotropies of the London penetration depth, ${\gamma}_{\lambda}$, slowly increases with temperature while the anisotropy of the upper critical field, ${\gamma}_H$, decreases with temperature. These behaviors are in sharp contrast with the behavior of superconductors with a single band. The temperature dependence of ${\lambda}_{ab}{^{-2}}$, and the opposite temperature dependences of ${\gamma}_{\lambda}\;and\;{\gamma}_H$ can be well explained with the theory of the two-band superconductivity.

  • The genetic structure of marine animals that inhabit the seashore is affected by numerous factors. Of these, gene flow and natural selection during recruitment have strong influences on the genetic structure of seashore-dwelling species that have larval periods. Relative contributions of these two factors to the genetic structure of marine species would be determined mainly by the duration of larval stage. The relationship between larval period and genetic structure of population has been rarely studied in Korea. In this study, genetic variations of cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) were analyzed in two dominant species on rocky shore habitats in the Korean peninsula: periwinkle Littorina brevicula and acorn barnacle Fistulobalanus albicostatus. Both species are not strongly structured and may have experienced recent population expansion. Unlike periwinkle, however, barnacle populations have considerable genetic variation, and show a bimodal pattern of mismatch distribution. These results suggest that barnacle populations are more affected by local adaptation rather than gene flow via larval migration. The bimodal patterns of barnacle populations observed in mismatch distribution plots imply that they may have experienced secondary contact. Further studies on seashore-dwelling species are expected to be useful in understanding the evolution of the coastal ecosystem around Korean waters.
