This study proposes a novel performance measure, which is referred to as Hazardous Spacing Index (HSI), to be used for evaluating safety of traffic stream on freeways. The basic principle of the proposed methodology is to investigate whether drivers would have sufficient stopping sight distance (SSD) under limited visibility conditions to eliminate rear-end crash potentials at every time step. Both Road Weather Information Systems (RWIS) and Vehicle Detection Systems (VDS) data were used to derive visibility distance (VD) and SSD, respectively. Moreover, the K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN) method was adopted to predict both VD and SSD in estimating predictive HSIs, which would be used to trigger advanced warning information to encourage safer driving. The outcome of this study is also expected to be used for monitoring freeway traffic stream in terms of safety.

During KSTAR plasma experiments, torsional $Alfv\acute{e}n$ waves in the frequency of few GHz or below were detected. To understand this plasma waves during the crash of MHD instabilities, an RF spectrometer has been developed for detection of the radiated RF signals in the KSTAR Tokamak. It has the capability of broadband RF spectral measurement (50 ~ 400 MHz). To detect the broadband RF signals which are radiated from the KSTAR systems, a broadband antenna is the key feature of the RF spectrometer. In this paper, a broadband bowtie antenna for detection of $Alfv\acute{e}n$-waves in the KSTAR Tokamak is presented. Planar-type bowtie antenna is designed and fabricated on an FR4 substrate with thickness of 1.6 mm. The antenna consists of bowtie shaped balanced radiators and broadband planar balun. The antenna is designed to have an input impedance of 50 Ohm, and a taper-shaped balun is adopted for field and impedance matching between 50 Ohm transmission line to 110 Ohm feeding network of balanced radiators. The implemented antenna provides around -3 to 3 dBi of gain for the whole frequency band. The VSWR of the bowtie antenna is less than 12:1 over the frequency bandwidth of 50 to 2000 MHz.

Although it is mandatory to wear a seat belt that can minimize human injury when traffic accident occurs, the number of traffic accident casualties not wearing seat belts still accounts for a significant proportion. The seat belt wearing detection system for all seats is a system that identifies whether all seat passengers wear a seat belt and encourages their usage, also it can be a useful technical countermeasure. Firstly, this study established the viability of system implementation by assessing the factors influencing the severity of injuries in traffic accidents through the development of an ordered probit model. Analysis results showed that the use of seat belts has statistically significant effects on the severity of traffic accidents, reducing the probability of death or serious injury by 0.054 times in the event of a traffic accident. Secondly, a meta-analysis was conducted based on prior research related to seat belts and injuries in traffic accidents to estimate the expected reduction in accident severity upon the implementation of the system. The analysis of the effect of accident severity reduction revealed that wearing seat belts would lead to a 63.3% decrease in fatal accidents, with the front seats showing a reduction of 75.7% and the rear seats showing a reduction of 58.1% in fatal accidents. Lastly, Using the results of the meta-analysis and traffic accident statistics, the expected decrease in the number of traffic accident casualties with the implementation of the system was derived to analyze the traffic safety effects of the proposed detection system. The analysis demonstrated that with an increase in the adoption rate of the system, the number of casualties in accidents where seat belts were not worn decreased. Specifically, at a system adoption rate of 60%, it is anticipated that the number of fatalities would decrease by more than three times compared to the current scenario. Based on the analysis results, operational strategies for the system were proposed to increase seat belt usage rates and reduce accident severity.
Power lines are one of the main obstacles causing an aircraft crash and thus their realtime detection is significantly important during flight. To avoid such flight obstacles, the use of LIDAR has been recently increasing thanks to its advantages that it is less sensitive to weather conditions and can operate in day and night. In this study, we suggest a fast method to detect power lines from LIDAR data for flight obstacle avoidance. The proposed method first extracts non-ground points by eliminating the points reflected from ground surfaces using a filtering process. Second, we calculate the eigenvalues for the covariance matrix from the coordinates of the generated non-ground points and obtain the ratio of eigenvalues. Based on the ratio of eigenvalues, we can classify the points on a linear structure. Finally, among them, we select the points forming horizontally long straight as power-line points. To verify the algorithm, we used both real and simulated data as the input data. From the experimental results, it is shown that the average detection rate and time are 80% and 0.2 second, respectively. If we would improve the method based on the experiment results from the various flight scenario, it will be effectively utilized for a flight obstacle avoidance system.

In this paper, we propose a prototype system for abnormal sound detection and identification which detects and recognizes the abnormal situations by means of analyzing audio information coming in real time from CCTV cameras under surveillance environment. The proposed system is composed of two layers: The first layer is an one-class support vector machine, i.e., support vector data description (SVDD) that performs rapid detection of abnormal situations and alerts to the manager. The second layer classifies the detected abnormal sound into predefined class such as 'gun', 'scream', 'siren', 'crash', 'bomb' via a sparse representation classifier (SRC) to cope with emergency situations. The proposed system is designed in a hierarchical manner via a mixture of SVDD and SRC, which has desired characteristics as follows: 1) By fast detecting abnormal sound using SVDD trained with only normal sound, it does not perform the unnecessary classification for normal sound. 2) It ensures a reliable system performance via a SRC that has been successfully applied in the field of face recognition. 3) With the intrinsic incremental learning capability of SRC, it can actively adapt itself to the change of a sound database. The experimental results with the qualitative analysis illustrate the efficiency of the proposed method.
Recently, advanced sensors and communication technologies have been widely applied to advanced safety vehicles for reducing traffic accidents and injury severity. To apply the advanced safety vehicle technologies, it is important to quantify safety benefits, which is a fundamental for justifying application. This study proposed a methodology for quantifying the effectiveness of the Advanced Driver Assistant System (ADAS) with the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP). When the proposed methodology is applied to 2008-2010 Gyeonggi-province crash data, ADAS would reduce about 10.18% of crashes. In addition, Adaptive Cruise Control, Automatic Emergency Braking System, Lane Departure Warning System and Blind Spot Detection System are expected to reduce about 10.43%, 10.17%, 9.96%, and 10.18%, respectively. The outcomes of this study might support decision making for developing not only vehicular technologies but also relevant safety policies.

When the for occurred, the driver does not get the vision is has difficult on driving. In this case, the probability of occurrence of accidents are very high level. To reduce accidents, this system provide drivers with the safety of ensure to measures that a service inform current situation. in this paper, the crash occur in fog to prevent accident using vehicle safety system to give a alarm and control. The proposed system is installed on the outside of the vehicle, humidity, and ambient light sensors inside the car from the information collected by the system controller for the detection of fog conditions using video equipment and then finally the fog occurs if you do not get the driver's field of events is causing the system.
Most transportation departments have recognized and developed procedures to address the ever-increasing weights of trucks traveling on bridges in a service today. Transportation agencies also recognize the issues with overheight vehicles' collisions with bridges, but few stakeholders have definitive countermeasures. Bridges are becoming more vulnerable to collisions from overheight vehicles. The exact response under lateral impact force is difficult to predict. In this paper, nonlinear impact analysis shows that the degree of deformation recorded through the modeling of the unprotected vehicle-girder model provides realistic results compared to the observation from the US-61 bridge overheight vehicle impact. The predicted displacements are 0.229 m, 0.161 m, and 0.271 m in the girder bottom flange (lateral), bottom flange (vertical), and web (lateral) deformations, respectively, due to a truck traveling at 112.65 km/h. With such large deformations, the integrity of an impacted bridge becomes jeopardized, which in most cases requires closing the bridge for safety reasons and a need for rehabilitation. We proposed different sacrificial cushion systems to dissipate the energy of an overheight vehicle impact. The goal was to design and tune a suitable energy absorbing system that can protect the bridge and possibly reduce stresses in the overheight vehicle, minimizing the consequences of an impact. A material representing a Sorbothane high impact rubber was chosen and modeled in ANSYS. Out of three sacrificial schemes, a sandwich system is the best in protecting both the bridge and the overheight vehicle. The mitigation system reduced the lateral deflection in the bottom flange by 89%. The system decreased the stresses in the bridge girder and the top portion of the vehicle by 82% and 25%, respectively. The results reveal the capability of the proposed sacrificial system as an effective mitigation system.

The deformed degree of car body varies largely with the collision part from side collision of car-to-car. In case of deformation of car body caused by collision, the movement is different as speed energy changes to strain energy. Generally, in the analysis of traffic accident, the movement of car after the collision is analyzed by law of conservation of motion and the error of energy absorption rate along the deformation of car body can be calibrated by inputting coefficient of restitution, but it is current situation that coefficient of restitution applied by referring to the research results of forward collision and backward collision because the research results of side collision is rare. Vehicle model of finite element method applied by structure of car body and materials of each component was analyzed by explicit finite element method, and coefficient of restitution and collision detection time along contact part of side collision was drawn by analyzing the results. Analysis result acquired through the law of conservation momentum by applying finally-computed coefficient of restitution and crash detection time compared to collision result of actual vehicle. As a result, the reliability of analysis was higher than the existing analysis method were acquired when applying the drawn initial input value that used finite element method analysis model.
