A Study on the Comparison of wind pressure on the member of Container Crane using Wind tunnel test and CFD

  • Because strong wind is one of the few forces that, although considered in container crane design, still cause significant damage, a container crane was tested to investigate wind load characteristic in uniform flows. So, this study measured an external point pressure at the each members of a container crane according to a wind direction and a shape of members in a wind-tunnel test. The result of this test was compared to those of computation fluid dynamics using a CFX 10. The scale of a container crane model for wind tunnel test applied similarity scales to consider the size of the wind tunnel test section and the boundary condition for CFD is like wind tunnel test.

컨테이너 크레인의 안정성에 대한 풍동실험과 유한요소해석의 비교 (Comparison of finite element analysis with wind tunnel test on stability of a container crane)

  • This study is conducted to provide the proper analysis method to evaluate the stability of a container crane under wind load. Two analysis method, namely structure analysis and fluid-structure interaction, are adopted to evaluate the stability of a container crane in this investigation. To evaluate the effect of wind load on the stability of the crane, 50-ton class container crane widely used in container terminals is adopted for analysis model and 19-values are considered for wind direction as design parameter. We conduct structure analysis and fluid-structure interaction for a container crane with respect to the wind direction using ANSYS and CFX. Then we compare the uplift forces yielded from two analysis with it yielded from wind tunnel test. The results are as follows: 1) A correlation coefficient between structure analysis and wind tunnel test is lower than 0.65(as $0.29{\sim}0.57$), but between fluid-structure interaction and wind tunnel test is higher than 0.65(as $0.78{\sim}0.86$). 2) There is low correlation between structure analysis and wind tunnel test but very high correlation between fluid-structure interaction and wind tunnel test.

The Effects of Origami on the Improvement of Hand Dexterity

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effects of making an origami crane on the improvement of hand dexterity. Subjects composed of 20 normal adult males were randomly assigned to experimental and control groups of 10 people respectively. For the experimental group, a training of making an origami crane was conducted for 40 to 50 minutes a day during a 4-week training period. The control group was made to engage in everyday activities as usual. For pre and post assessment, Groove Pegboard test, Purdue Pegboard Test, and Jebsen Hand Function Test were used. The results on the effects of making an origami crane showed that there was a statistically significant difference in both the Grooved Pegboard test and Purdue Pegboard test(p<.05). In the Jebsen hand function Test, a significant difference was found in handwriting and building pieces of chess(p<.05), but there was no statistically significant difference in comparison with the right hand during the average performance of picking up small stuffs. The activity of making an origami crane for normal adults was confirmed to be helpful to improve the hand dexterity. Accordingly, making an origami crane is suggested to be an effective way to improve the hand dexterity.

  • A provision crane is generally installed on the upper deck to the rear of the accommodation of the ship in order to load and unload engine part or something heavy. There are two types of provision cranes: one is jib-type and the other is monorail-type. So the natural frequency of the jib-type crane equipment is low, therefore, there are some possibility of resonance between crane structure and the main excitation sources of the ship in normal operating range. This study describe a vibration reduction technique for provision crane by applying a proper countermeasure through finite element analysis and modal test. In order to find out weak point in design of provision crane, a sensitive analysis has been performed.

Development of a Screw-Crane System for Pre-Lifting the Sternal Depression in Pectus Excavatum Repair: A Test of Mechanical Properties for the Feasibility of a New Concept

  • Background: Pre-lifting of the sternum marked a major turning point in pectus excavatum repair. The author developed the crane technique in 2002 and successfully applied it to more than 2,000 cases using sternal wire stitching. However, blind sternal suturing limited the use of the wire-stitch crane. We propose a novel screw for sternal lifting as a new tool for the crane technique. Methods: We developed a screw system strong enough to withstand the pressure needed for sternum lifting. The screw was designed to have a broader thread to hold the bony tissue securely. The screw's sustaining power was tested using the torsion, driving torque, and axial pull-out tests in a polyurethane block and ex-vivo porcine sternum. Results: The screws were easily driven into the sternum, and the head of the screw was connectable to the table-mounted retractor. In the torsion test, the 2° offset torsional yield was 4.53 N·m (reference value, 1 N·m). In the polyurethane block driving torque test, the maximum torque was 0.98 N·m (reference value, 0.70 N·m). The axial pull-out test was 446 N (reference value, 100 N). The maximum pull-out resistance in the ex-vivo porcine sternum model was 1,516 N. Conclusion: The screw crane was strong enough to sustain the chest wall weight to be lifted. Thus, the screws could effectively replace the sternal wire stitching in crane pre-lifting of the sternum. We expect that application of the screw-crane will be easy and that it will improve the safety and success rate of pectus repair surgery.

  • 본 연구는 풍하중 하에서 컨테이너 크레인의 전도사고 예방을 위한 경보시스템용 기준데이터를 도출하기 위하여 수행되었다. 분석방법으로 유동구조연성해석과 풍동실험이 사용되었으며, 크레인의 안정성에 대한 풍하중의 영향을 평가하기 위하여 컨테이너 터미널에서 널리 사용되고 있는 50 톤급 컨테이너 크레인이 해석모델로 선정되고, 19 가지 풍향이 설계변수로 채택되었다. 연구방법은 먼저 경계층풍동을 사용하여 풍향에 따른 컨테이너 크레인 모형에 대한 풍동실험을 수행한 후, ANSYS 와 CFX 를 사용하여 실제 크레인의 유동구조연성해석을 수행하였다. 다음으로 유동구조연성해석을 통해 산출된 부상력과 풍동실험을 통해 도출된 부상력을 비교하여 두 방법에 있어서 차이을 보정하기 위한 식을 제시하였다.
