In this study, the size effect on axial compressive strength for concrete members was experimentally investigated. Experiment of mode I failure, which is one of the two representative compressive failure modes, was carried out by using double cantilever beam specimens. By varying the eccentricity of applied loads with respect to the axis on each cantilever and the initial crack length, the size effect of axial compressive strength of concrete was investigated, and new parameters for the modified size effect law (MSEL) were suggested using least square method (LSM). The test results show that size effect appears for axial compressive strength of cracked specimens. For the eccentricity of loads, the influence of tensile and compressive stress at the crack tip are significant and so that the size effect is present. In other words, if the influence of tensile stress at the crack tip grows up, the size effect of concrete increases. And the effect of initial crack length on axial compressive strength is present, however, the differences with crack length are not apparent because the size of fracture process zone (FPZ) of all specimens in the high-strength concrete is similar regardless of differences of specimen slenderness.
Experimental and numerical simulation were used to investigate the effects of angle and number of T shape non-persistent crack on the shear behaviour of crack's bridge area under uniaxial compressive test. concrete samples with dimension of 150 mm×150 mm×40 mm were prepared. Within the specimen, T shape non-persistent notches were provided. 16 different configuration systems were prepared for T shape non-persistent crack based on two and three cracks. In these configurations, the length of cracks were taken as 4 cm and 2 cm based on the cracks configuration systems. The angle of larger crack related to horizontal axis was 0°, 30°, 60° and 90°. Similar to cracks configuration systems in the experimental tests, 28 models with different T shape non-persistent crack angle were prepared in numerical model. The length of cracks were taken as 4 cm and 2 cm based on the cracks configuration systems. The angle of larger crack related to horizontal axis was 0°, 15°, 30°, 45°, 60°, 75° and 90°. Tensile strength of concrete was 1 MPa. The axial load was applied to the model. Displacement loading rate was controlled to 0.005 mm/s. Results indicated that the failure process was significantly controled by the T shape non-persistent crack angle and crack number. The compressive strengths of the specimens were related to the fracture pattern and failure mechanism of the discontinuities. Furthermore, it was shown that the compressive behaviour of discontinuities is related to the number of the induced tensile cracks which are increased by increasing the crack number and crack angle. The strength of samples decreased by increasing the crack number. In addition, the failure pattern and failure strength are similar in both methods i.e. the experimental testing and the numerical simulation methods (PFC2D).
This paper investigates cutting qualities after laser dicing and predicts the problems that can be generated by laser dicing. And through 3 point bending test, die strength is measured and the die strength after laser dicing is compared with the die strength after mechanical sawing. Laser dicing is chiefly considered as an alternative to overcome the defects of mechanical sawing such as chipping on the surface and crack on the back side. Laser micromachining is based on the thermal ablation and evaporation mechanism. As a result of laser dicing experiments, debris on the surface of wafer is observed. To eliminate the debris and protect the surface, an experiment is done using a water soluble coating material and ultrasonic. The consequence is that most of debris is removed. But there are some residues around the cutting line. Unlike mechanical sawing, chipping on the surface and crack on the back side is not observed. The cross section of cutting line by laser dicing is rough as compared with that by mechanical sawing. But micro crack can not be seen. Micro crack reduces die strength. To measure this, 3 point bending test is done. The die strength after laser dicing decreases to a half of the die strength after mechanical sawing. This means that die cracking during package assembly can occur.
Although various methods for determination of damage threshold in rock have been suggested, clear damage thresholds were determined by some methods, but different thresholds were measured by other methods. We determined the damage thresholds in Hangdeung granite using all the methods suggested, and investigated the best methods, applicability and errors of each method. The crack initiation threshold and the crack damage threshold which are important in investigation of characteristics of crack development and failure were verified by field strength ratio method and long-term constant load test. The crack closure stress and the crack initiation stress were 57.5 MPa and 77.6 MPa, and the most exact values were yielded by crack volumetric strain. The secondary crack initiation stress was 90.6 MPa and AE event count and AE event count rate were the effective methods. The volumetric stiffness, AE event count and AE event count rate were the most effective methods for determination of crack coalescence threshold and crack coalescence stress was 110.3 MPa. The crack damage stress was 127.5 MPa and was measured correctly by volumetric stiffness and AE event count rate. The ratio between crack initiation stress and uniaxial compressive strength was 0.47 which was very similar with the FSR value of 0.46. The ratio between crack damage stress and uniaxial compressive strength was almost the same as the ratio between long-term strength and uniaxial compressive strength, indicating that the crack initiation stress and the crack damage stress measured were correct.

Welding is used not only for the shipbuilding, but also for the repairing of ships. While repairing of ships, it is inevitable to weld new materials with degraded materials. In this case, it is predicted that the strength of both the sections is not identical each other. In this study, the respective welded joints in terms of mechanical properties such as microstructure, mechanical strength and fatigue crack propagation, with the component obtained from the barge used for a long-term period, were analyzed. It was found that the material degradation had a significant effect on the welded joints. The fatigue crack propagation in welded sections showed a big difference. The rate of fatigue crack growth of degraded material for both heat affected zone and parent metal was faster than that of new material. By contrast, the result from identical materials showed that the rate of fatigue crack growth of the heat-affected zone was slower than that of parent metal.
To analyze and predict crack initiation position and propagation directions on the spot welded area are very important for strength design of the automobile body structure. It is necessary to test by method considering random loads with variable amplitude for strength design of vehicle body structure, because driving cars are actually subjected to random loads with variable amplitude in the road. Although this condition, nearly all tests haute been performed under constant load conditions in the laboratory because it is impossible to replay like an actual conditions. In this study, using in-plane bending type specimens, the overload factor affecting on the fatigue strength, crack initiation and propagation directions of spot-welded specimens have been studied.

A major difference between high-strength reinforcing steel and conventional steel in concrete is that the service-load steel stress is expected to be greater. Consequently, the service-load steel strains are greater affecting cracking behavior. A parametric study investigating crack widths and patterns in reinforced concrete prisms is presented in order to establish limits to the service-load steel stress and strain. Additionally, based on the results of available flexural tests, crack widths at service load levels were evaluated and found to be within presently accepted limits for highway bridge structures, and were predictable using current AASHTO provisions. A limitation on service-level stresses of $f_s{\leq}414$ MPa (60 ksi) is nonetheless recommended.

This paper presents the experimental study on crack control of core-wall placed with 700kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ Ultra high strength concrete. The thermal sensors were installed into the core-walls prior to the concrete casting to measure the heat of hydration and atmospheric temperature whose difference might cause the initial crack. Several curing schemes were taken for each basement floor 8 thru 6 to examine the influence of curing method on the crack width, total crack length and the number of crack occurred. This paper demonstrates that the proper curing scheme have a great favorable effect on the initial crack control on the structural elements with noticiable reduction in crack width.
In this study, we compared a plain mortar with the CAS-system shrinkage compensation mortar for Ondol that is Korean traditional heating system. The Ondol mortar is necessary to have properties as non-crack, fine flatness and stability for thermal changes. especially, mortar'crack prevention is to be most important property in Ondol mortar. To develope the stable material on the crack-prevention, we used to calcium-sulfo-aluminate(CSA)system in shrinkage compensation mortar. And so, we confirmed the effects of calcium-sulfo-aluminate(CSA) system for mortar's physical properties such as setting time, compressive strength and expansion ratio for crack prevention. The initial and final setting time of the CSA mortar is faster than plain mortar about 2hours. And, Compressive strength increased about 20% that plain mortar. The crack length per unit area, plain mortar is 0.426∼0.481m/m2. The Results of apartment construction field test, the shrinkage compensation mortar is excellent about the crack-reduce effect.
