In this study, the propagation behaviour and the closure phenomena of physically small surface cracks were investigated by the techinque of the Kikukawa-unloading elastic compliance method using a back face strain gage. The surface cracks initiated and propagated from notched specimens under constant amplitude bending load. The crack shape (aspect ratio) with approximately semi-circular at the early stage was changed to semi-elliptical as the cracks grew larger. The crack depth (a) could be expressed uniquenly by the crack length (c). The dependence of the crack propagation rate on the stress ratio R was strongly related in the lower ${\Delta}K$ range. The deceleration of the surface crack propagation rate was prominent in lower R during the crack length was small. When the propagation rate was rearranged with the effective stress intensity factor range ${\Delta}$K_{eff} the dependence of the crack propagation rate on the stress ratio R was found to be diminshed. These were caused by the crack closure phenomena that was most prominent at the lower propagation rate. The mechanism of crack closure phenomena was dominated by the plasticity-induced mechanism.

In this study, martensite-ferrite dual phase steel composed of martensite in hard phase and ferrite in soft phase is made as model material, and the difference of fatigue crack propagation behavior resulted from the structural size is investigated by fracture mechanics and microstructural method. The main results obtained are as follows; 1)Fatigue crack propagation rate is influenced by ferrite grain size. In other words, in the low .DELTA. K region fatigue crack propagation rate is decreased with decreasing of grain size but the difference of propagation rate resulted from the structural size is decreased as .DELTA.K is increased. 2)The above result is explained by the degree of crack arrest effect of second phase for fatigue crack propagation depending on the ratio of reversed plastic zone size to ferrite grain size.
This paper aims to analyze fatigue fracture mechnisms with high strength aluminum alloys, which are widely used in vehicles or airplanes to prevent accidents. Usefulness of the crack opening point was proposed by using an effective stress intensity facor when evaluating the fatigue crack propagaion rate. Therefore an exact crack opening ratio can be measured for a more exact fatigue crack propagation rate. It is found that the fatigue crack propagation rate was valid within the range of experimentation as an effective stress intensity factor. Summarizing the results are as follows in this paper ; (1) It is found that the value of the crack opening ratio is constant at the rear of the specimen, U'=0.25 at the crack mouth and U'=0.45 at the crack tip, respectively regardless of the stress ratio. (2) The crack opening ratio is different according to measurement locations. The crack opening ratio value was measured at the crack mouth by a clip gage or measured behind the specimen by a strain gage. It is found that the crack opening ratio value is more accurate that any other measuring test for evaluating the crack propagation ratio test by effective stress intensity factor.

To evaluate the effects of mode II on the crack initiation and propagation stages, the effects in the fatigue threshold region under a mixed-mode I+II loading state was experimentally investigated. In the case of mixed-mode I + II, during the crack initiation stage, as the loading application angle (${\theta}$) increased, cracks occurred in the lower load owing to the effects of mode II, while the crack propagation rate decreased. The effects of mode II were experimentally investigated in the crack propagation stage by means of multilevel loading direction variation. Following mixed-mode I+II ($0^{\circ}{\rightarrow}{\theta}{\rightarrow}60^{\circ}$), as the load application angle increased, the fatigue crack propagation rate decreased, as did the fatigue crack propagation rate, which occurred later. Following mixed-mode I + II in case of(${\theta}{\geq}75^{\circ}$), the fatigue crack propagation rate was found to increase, while the fatigue life decreased.

This study has been made to investigate Behavior of the fatigue crack propagation for the purpose of taking into consideration the fatigue behavior Which initiate and propagate in tip of defect of the defected specimens, Which Contain the micro-hole or micro-slit. Especially, the specimens have been conducted with high-freguency heat treatment of 850.deg. C, 1050.deg. C to consider strength elevation of defected specimens. The results of this study are as follow; (1) The case of the same in the length of crack, the fatigue crack propagation rate of the micro-slit is always faster than that of micre-hole. But, the first step of the fatigue crack propagation it is not always so. (2) Fatigue crack propagation rate of specimens with micro-slit or micro-hole which have been treated with high-frequency heat treatment satisfy the following formula between the fatigue crack propagation rate and nominal stress; dl/dN .var..sigma.$^{m}$ *l$^{n}$ .

Crack propagation mechanisms of Sn-3.0Ag-0.5Cu solder were studied in strain controlled push-pull creepfatigue conditions using the fast-fast (pp) and the slow-fast (cp) strain waveforms at 313 K. Transgranular cracking was found in the pp strain waveform which led to the cycle-dominant crack propagation and intergranular cracking in the cp strain waveform that led to the time-dominant crack propagation. The time-dominant crack propagation rate was faster than the cycle-dominant crack propagation rate when compared with J-integral range which resulted from the creep damage at the crack tip in the cp strain waveform. Clear recrystallization around the crack was found in the pp and the cp strain waveforms, but the recrystallized grain size in the cp strain waveform was smaller than that in the pp strain waveform. The cycle-dominant crack propagated in the normal direction to the specimen axis macroscopically, but the time-dominant crack propagated in the shear direction which was discussed in relation with shear micro cracks formed at the crack tip.

Generally, field performance of elastomeric track pad components has been poor, especially for the medium to heavy tonnage tracked vehicles, which are operated on the hilly cross-country course. The service life of these track pad, is affected not only by the terrain and environmental conditions but also by the speed, cornering, braking, weight of the vehicle, and the track tread design. In this research, modulus, tearing energy, and the rate of crack propagation of vulcanizates are evaluated by changing base materials to improve the service time of track pad. By increasing the contents of carbon black, modulus, tearing energy, and fatigue crack growth resistance of vulcanizates improved. Compared with the NR vulcanizate, the HNBR vulcanizate had a higher value of tearing energy. The rate of crack propagation of vulcanizates using smaller size carbon black was slower than that using larger size carbon black. When the HNBR was blended with the ZSC, the tearing energy of the vulcanizates was a little reduced because of the high modulus but the crack propagation rate was reduced significantly. In the relation between the crack propagation rate and the strain energy release rate, though up to 100% strain were applied to specimens, the slope on the log scale ($\beta$) varied between 1.72 and 2.3 with the kind of elastomer.

Recently, with rapid increase of gas demand, there occurs much interest their security of safety in the gas storage tanks and pressure vessels etc. In order to solve the problems, the occurrence of corrosion fatigue crack and the propagation behavior must be investigated. Especially the occurrence of corrosion fatigue crack and the propagation behavior in the part which has concentrated stress or defects, must be studied more carefully. In this paper, the high-tensile steel of SPV 50 which is much used for building the LPG storage tanks was tested by the use of a plane bending corrosion fatigue tester under the various marine environment and in the air. These experiments were carried out to investigate the surface crack propagation behavior, the value of experimental constant for Paris' rule(da/dN=$C(K)^m$), the crack depth propagation rate and the accelerative factor of the surface crack propagation rate. The main results obtained are as follows ; 1) As the specific resistances of marine environment decreases, the exponential value of slope m of Paris' rule(da/dN=$C(K)^m$) decreases and the value of intercept C increases. 2) The surface crack propagation rate and the crack depth propagation rate are delayed, as the specific resistances of marine environment is increased. 3) The accelerative factor of the surface crack propagation rate by corrosion fatigue is higher, according as the stress intensity factor range ${\Delta}K_A$ is small.

This paper aims to synthesize the research on fatigue fracture mechanisms of high strength aluminum alloys which are widely used in motorcars or airplanes to prevent accidents. To measure the data of crack opening ratio, the same materials and method are used for evaluating the fatigue crack propagation rate as an effective stress intensity factor. But, many researchers have brought different results. An exact crack opening ratio was, therefore, proposed for getting a more accurate fatigue crack propagation rate. The main conclusions obtained are as follows. (1) As a result of the fatigue test, the value of the crack opening ratio is the same regardless of the stress ratio. (2) The value of crack opening ratio is different according to the measuring point. After measuring the crack propagation rate by using an effective stress intensity factor, the crack opening ratio value measured at the crack mouth by a clip gage, or measured rear of the specimen by a strain gage is more accurate than that by any other measuring test.

Ship structures and aircraft structures are consisted of thin sheet alloy, so it is very important to understand the characteristics of fatigue crack propagation of that material and to establish the data base. The data for fatigue crack propagation behavior scatter very much even under identical experimental conditions with constant loading. The behavior of fatigue crack propagation under regular and irregular cyclic loadings is known to be highly affected by complicated factors such as plastic zone developed at the vicinity of crack tip and reduction of cross sectional area. In this paper, the controlled stress amplitude and overload fatigue crack propagation tests have been conducted to investigate the effect of varying factors such as plastic zone size near the crack tip and area reduction factor (AF) on the fatigue crack propagation behavior A better simulation of fatigue crack propagation behavior is found to be obtainable by using Wheeler and Willenborg models with AF effect.
