  • As the crack grows in the residual stress fields, the distribution of the residual stress is changed. In this study, a finite element modeling technique is developed to simulate the redistribution of residual stress due to crack propagation. To certify the accuracy, the crack propagation tests were carried out and tile effective stress intensity factor range was evaluated considering the redistribution of residual stress from the FE analysis.

  • In this study effect of residual stress and its redistribution in weldment on the fatigue crack propagation was investigated. Fatigue tests were conducted by the center notched specimens machined with welded plate. The residual stress and its redistribution after the crack growth were measured by the magnetizing stress indicator and hole-drilling method. Fatigue crack propagation was estimated by the specimens having residual stress redistributed after the cracks growth and having the effects of crack closure. Crack growth rates were predicted and compared with experimental results. It had been found that the predicted crack propagation rates have a good agreement with experimental results when the redistribution of residual stress was considered.

  • Fracture life and crack retardation behavior were examined experimentally using CT specimens of aluminum alloy 5083. Crack retardation life and fracture life were a wide difference. between 0.8 and 0.6 in proportion to ratio of load reduction. The wheeler model retardation parameter was used successfully to predict crack growth behavior. By using a crack propagation rule, prediction of fracture life can be evaluated quantitatively. A statistical approach based on Weibull distribution was applied to the test data to evaluate the dispersion in the retardation life and fracture life by the change of load reduction.

  • The dynamic problems of interface crack propagated with constant velocity along the interface of bimateraial composed of isotropic and orthotropicmaterial under antiplane loading condition are studied in this paper. The general dynamic stress fields and displacement fields of mode III are derived when interface crack between isotropic and orthotropic material is propagating with constant velocity. The general dynamic stress fields and displacement fields in isotropic material. Finally, the characteristics of interface crack propagation are studied with various properties of isotropic and orthotropic material and crack propagarion velocities.

  • It is the aim of this paper to propose the empirical fatigue crack propagation model fit to describe a crack growth behavior of AZ31 magnesium alloys. The statistical data of a crack growth for an estimation are obtained by fatigue crack propagation tests under the three cases of maximum load. The empirical models estimated are Paris-Erdogan model, Walker model, Forman model, and modified-Forman model. It is found that the empirical model fit to describe a crack growth behavior of AZ31 magnesium alloys is Paris-Erdogan model and Walker model. It is also verified that a fatigue crack growth rate exponent of a empirical model is to be a material constant.

  • In this article, a developed bond-based peridynamic model for functionally graded materials (FGMs) is proposed to simulate the dynamic fracture behaviors in FGMs. In the developed bond-based peridynamic model for FGMs, bonds are categorized into three different types, including transverse directionally peridynamic bond, gradient directionally peridynamic bond and arbitrary directionally peridynamic bond, according to the geometrical relationship between directions of peridynamic bonds and gradient bonds in FGMs. The peridynamic micromodulus in the gradient directionally and arbitrary directionally peridynamic bonds can be determined using the weighted projection method. Firstly, the standard bond-based peridynamic simulations of crack propagation and branching in the homogeneous PMMA plate are performed for validations, and the results are in good agreement with the previous experimental observations and the previous phase-field numerical results. Then, the numerical study of crack initiation, propagation and branching in FGMs are conducted using the developed bond-based peridynamic model, and the influence of gradient direction on the dynamic fracture behaviors, such as crack patterns and crack tip propagation speed, in FGMs is systematically studied. Finally, numerical results reveal that crack branching in FGMs under dynamic loading conditions is easier to occur as the gradient angle decreases, which is measured by the gradient direction and direction of the initial crack.

  • In this paper, to examine the propagation of inclined surface crack due to frictional heating, analytic model is considered as the semi-infinite elastic body subjected to the thermo-mechanical loading of an asperity moving with a high speed. Considering the moving of frictional heat source and convection on a semi-infinite surface having inclined crack, theoretical analysis was carried out to estimate the propagation characteristics of thermo-mechanical crack. Numerical results showed that stress intensity factor $K_\prod/P_0\sqrt{c}$ is increasing with increasing velocity and frictional coefficient, inclined degree, decreasing crack length and the maximum value of it is positioned at the trailing edge. So it is shown that the propagation probability of surface crack is high at the trailing edge of contact area as increasing velocity and frictional coefficient, inclined degree, as decreasing crack length.
