  • The dynamic response due to the unbalance and crack and the quasi-static response due to gravity are analytically derived based on the complex transfer matrix. The additional slope is expressed as function of the bending moment at crack position based on the fracture mechanics concept, and inversely the bending moment is expressed as function of the additional slope at the crack Position. At each angle step during the shaft revolution, the additional slope and bending moment are calculated by an iterativemethod. The transient behavior is considered by introducing Fourier series expansion concept for the additional slope. Simulation is carried out for a simple rotor similar to those available in the literature and comparison of the basic crack behavior is shown. Using the additional slope, the cracked rotor behavior is explained with the crack depth increased: the magnitude of the additional slope increases and the closed crack duration during a revolution decreases as the crack depth increases. The direction of unbalance is also shown as a factor to affect the crack breathing. Whirl orbits are shown near the sub-critical speed ranges of the rotor.

  • This study investigated the process of thermal-induced growth of micro-crack developed at the crystalline solar cell using EL image, determined the output characteristic according to the pattern of micro-crack, analyzed the I-V characteristic according to the pattern of crack growth, and predicted the output value using simulation. The purpose of this study was, therefore, to investigate the process of thermal-induced growth of micro-crack developed at the early stage of PV module completion using EL image, to analyze the resulting decrement of output and predict the output value using simulation. It was observed that the crack grew increasingly by the thermal condition, and accordingly the lowering of output was accelerated. The output values of crack patterns with various direction were predicted using simulation, resulting in close I-V curve with only around 4% of error rate. It is considered that it is possible to predict the electric characteristic of solar cell module using only pattern of micro-crack occurred at solar cell based on our results.

  • Fatigue crack growth experiments were carried out on a 304 L stainless steel compact-tension(CT) specimen under load control mode. Neutron diffraction was employed to quantitatively measure the residual strains/stresses and the evolution of stress fields in the vicinity of a propagating fatigue-crack tip. Three principal stress components (i.e. crack growth, crack opening, and through-thickness direction stresses) were examined in-situ under loading as a function of distance from the crack tip along the crack-propagation path. The stress/strain fields, measured both at the mid-thickness and near the surface of the CT specimen, were compared. The results show that much higher compressive residual stress fields developed in front of the crack tip near the surface than developed at the mid-thickness area. The change of the stresses ahead of the crack tip under loading is more significant at the mid-thickness area than it is near the surface.

  • In this study, a new damage identification method for beam-like structures with a fatigue crack is proposed. which does not require comparative measurement on an intact structure but require several measurements at different level of excitation forces on the cracked structure. The idea comes from the fact that dynamic behavior of a structure with a fatigue crack changes with the level of the excitation force. The 2$^{nd}$ spatial derivatives of frequency response functions along the longitudinal direction of a beam are used as the sensitive indicator of crack existence. Then, weighting function is employed in the averaging process in frequency domain to account for the modal participation of the differences between the dynamic behavior of a beam with a fatigue crack at the low excitation and one at the high excitation. Subsequently, a damage index is defined such that the location and level of the crack may be identified. It is shown from the analysis of vibration measurements in this study that comparison of frequency response characteristics of a beam with a single fatigue crack at different level of excitation forces enables an effective detection of the crack.

  • In this paper, the fatigue behaviour of typical axisymmetric forward extrusion die is investigated and extrusion process is analyzed by the rigid-plastic finite element method and elasto-plastic finite element method. To approach the crack problem involving crack initiation and propagation in extrusion die, LEFM(Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics) is introduced and singular element which models stress.strain singularity in the crack tip vincity has been used to obtain an accurate stress intensityu factor values and other results. Form the displacement around the crack tip the stress intensity factor and the effective stress intensity factor at the beginning of the die inlet radius has been calculated. Applying proper fatigue crack propagation criterion such as Paris/Erdogan fatigue law to this data the angle and direction of fatigue crack growth has been simulated and these are compared with some experimental results. Using the computed crack growth rate, fatigue life of the extrusion die has been evaluated.

  • In structural applications, brittle materials such as soda-lime glasses and ceramics are usually subjected to multiaxial stress state. Brittle materials with cracks or damage by foreign object impacts are apt to fracture abruptly from cracks, because of their properities of very high strength and low fracture toughness. But in most cases, the residual strength of structural members with damage has been tested under uniaxial stress condition such as the 4-point bend test. Depending upon the crack pattern developed, the strength under multiaxial stress state might be different from the one under uniaxial. A comparative study was carried out to investigate the influence of stress state on the residual strength evaluation. In comparable tests, the residual strength under biaxial stress state by the ball-on-ring test was greater than that under the uniaxial one by the 4-point bend test, when a small size indendation crack was introduced. In the case that crack having an angle of 90deg. to the applied stress direction, the ratio of biaxial to uniaxial flexure strength was about 1.12. The residual strength was different from crack angles to loading direction when it was evaluated by the 4-point bend test. The ratio of residual strength of 45deg. crack to 90deg. one was about 1.20. In the case of specimen cracked by a spherical impact, it was shown that an overall decrease in flexure strength with increasing impact velocity, and the critical impact velocity for formation of a radial and/or cone crack was about 30m/s. In those cases that relatively large cracks were developed as compared with the case of indented cracks, the ratio of residual strength under biaxial stress state to one uniaxial became small.

  • When the crack in orthotropic material is propagating under dynamic model I load, influences of anisotropic property ratio $E_{L}$/ $E_{T}$ on stress and displacement around propagating crack tip are studied in this paper. When M<0.55 and .alpha.=90.deg.(.alpha.; the angle of fiber direction with crack propagating direction, M; crack propagation velocity/shear stress wave velocity), the influence of $E_{L}$/ $E_{T}$ on stress .sigma.$_{x}$, .sigma.$_{y}$, .tau.$_{xy}$ and .sigma.$_{\theta}$ is the greast on .sigma.$_{y}$. Except M<0.55 and .alpha.=90.deg., it is the greast on .sigma.$_{x}$ in any situation. Increasing $E_{L}$/ $E_{T}$, stress components are increased or decreased. When maximum stress is based, the stress .sigma.$_{x}$(.alpha.=90.deg.), .sigma.$_{y}$(.alpha.=0.deg.) and .tau.$_{xy}$ (.alpha.=90.deg.) are decreased with increment of $E_{L}$/ $E_{T}$ in M=0. any stresses except .sigma.$_{*}$x/(.alpha.=0.deg.) are decreased with increment of $E_{L}$/ $E_{T}$ in M=0.9. When .alpha.=90.deg., the influence of $E_{L}$/ $E_{T}$ on displacement U and V is V>U in any velocities of crack propagation, when .alpha.=0.deg., it is VU in M>0.75 and when $E_{L}$/ $E_{T}$ is increased, U and V are decreased in any conditions.sed in any conditions.tions.tions.tions.

  • Considering the wind power system and the rotor blades which are composed of much technology, the wind power blade would be the most dangerous part because it revolves at high speed and weighs about dozens of tons, if the accident happens. Therefore, the light weight composite materials have been replacing as substitutional materials. The object of this study is to examine the delamination and damage for CFRP/GFRP hybrid composite that is used for strength improvement of a wind power blade. The influence of the initial crack length and fiber orientation for the interlaminar delamination was exposed for the blade safety. Plain woven CFRP instead of GFRP was inserted into the layer of the box spar for improving the strength and blade life. DCB(Double Cantilever Beam) specimen was used for evaluating fracture toughness and damage evaluation of interlaminar delamination. The material used in the experiment is a commercial material known as CF 3327 EPC in plain woven carbon prepreg(Hankuk Carbon Co.) and UD glass fiber prepreg(Hyundai Fiber Co.). From the results, crack growth rate is not so different according to the variation of the initial crack length. Mode I interlamainar fracture toughness of fiber direction $0^{\circ}$ is higher than that of $45^{\circ}$. Interlaminar fracture has an effect on fiber direction and K decreased with lower value according to increasing initial crack length. Also energy release rate fracture toughness was evaluated because CFRP/GFRP hybrid composite with a different thickness is under the mixed mode loading condition. The interlaminar fracture was almost governed by mode I fracture even though the mixed mode.

  • In this research, an effective computational technique is carried out for nonlinear and post-buckling analyses of cracked imperfect composite plates. The laminated plates are assumed to be moderately thick so that the analysis can be carried out based on the first-order shear deformation theory. Geometric non-linearity is introduced in the way of von-Karman assumptions for the strain-displacement equations. The Ritz technique is applied using Legendre polynomials for the primary variable approximations. The crack is modeled by partitioning the entire domain of the plates into several sub-plates and therefore the plate decomposition technique is implemented in this research. The penalty technique is used for imposing the interface continuity between the sub-plates. Different out-of-plane essential boundary conditions such as clamp, simply support or free conditions will be assumed in this research by defining the relevant displacement functions. For in-plane boundary conditions, lateral expansions of the unloaded edges are completely free while the loaded edges are assumed to move straight but restricted to move laterally. With the formulation presented here, the plates can be subjected to biaxial compressive loads, therefore a sensitivity analysis is performed with respect to the applied load direction, along the parallel or perpendicular to the crack axis. The integrals of potential energy are numerically computed using Gauss-Lobatto quadrature formulas to get adequate accuracy. Then, the obtained non-linear system of equations is solved by the Newton-Raphson method. Finally, the results are presented to show the influence of crack length, various locations of crack, load direction, boundary conditions and different values of initial imperfection on nonlinear and post-buckling behavior of laminates.
