Development of Crack Examination Algorithm Using the Linearly Integrated Hall Sensor Array (선형 홀 센서 배열을 사용한 결함 검사 알고리즘 개발)

  • Previous researches show that linearly integrated Hall sensor arrays (LIHaS) can detect cracks in the steel structure fast and effectively This paper proposes an algorithm that estimates the size and shape of cracks for the developed LIHaS. In most nondestructive testing (NDT), just crack existence and location are obtained by processing 1-dimensional data from the sensor that scans the object with relative speed in single direction. The proposed method is composed with two steps. The first step is constructing 2-dimensionally mapped data space by combining the converted position data from the time-based scan data with the position information of sensor arrays those are placed in the vertical direction to the scan direction. The second step is applying designed Laplacian filter and smoothing filter to estimate the size and shape of cracks. The experimental results of express train wheels show that the proposed algorithm is not only more reliable and accurate to detecting cracks but also effective to estimate the size and shape of cracks.

  • Following the previous paper, the results of test are further presented. As partially prestressed concrete members permit cracks under the service state, deflection and crack control of partially prestressed concrete members is more important than that of reinforced or fully prestressed concrete members. By the test results of load-deflection relation, it can be shown that prestressing ratio significantly affects the behavior of partially prestressed concrete beams. Deflection prediction formula of some codes are tried, and test results are compared with various fomulae of crack spacing and crack width.

  • In domestic construction industry progress, construction and quality control of large structures are considered to be important as the superstructure and mass scale of structures. In the case of mass concrete, high hydration heat caused by cement hydration generates temperature stress by generating internal temperature difference with the concrete surface. These temperature stresses cause cracks to penetrate the concrete structure. A method of lowering the heat generation by incorporating Urea in order to reduce the concrete temperature crack has been proposed. In this study, the heat function coefficient for the FEM temperature crack analysis of the mass concrete containing the element was derived and the adiabatic temperature rise test was carried out according to the incorporation of the element. As a result of this experiment, the maximum temperature of 41 ± 1℃ was obtained irrespective of the amount of urea, and the maximum temperature decreased by 16.9℃ in concrete containing 40kg/㎥ of urea.

  • In this study, the two-dimensional crack problem was investigated by using the finite element method (FEM)-based ANSYS package program and the artificial neural network (ANN)-based multilayer perceptron (MLP) method. For this purpose, a half-infinite functionally graded (FG) layer with a crack pressed through two rigid blocks was analyzed using FEM and ANN. Mass forces and friction were neglected in the solution. To control the validity of the crack problem model exercised, the acquired results were compared with a study in the literature. In addition, FEM and ANN results were checked using Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) and coefficient of determination (R2), and a well agreement was found. Numerical solutions were made considering different geometric parameters and material properties. The stress intensity factor (SIF) was examined for these values, and the results were presented. Consequently, it is concluded that the considered non-dimensional quantities have a noteworthy influence on the SIF. Also FEM and ANN can be logical alternative methods to time-consuming analytical solutions if used correctly.

  • The crack of concrete induced by the heat of hydration is a serious problem, particularly in concrete structures such as underground box structure, mat-slab of nuclear reactor buildings, dams or large footings, foundations of high rise buildings, etc.. As a result of the temperature rise and restriction condition of foundation, the thermal stress which may induce the cracks can occur. Therefore the various techniques of the thermal stress control in massive concrete have been widely used. One of them is prediction of the thermal stress, besides low-heat cement which mitigates the temperature rise, pre-cooling which lowers the initial temperature of fresh concrete with ice flake, pipe cooling which cools the temperature of concrete with flowing water, design change which considers steel bar reinforcement, operation control and so on. The objective of this paper is largely two folded. Firstly we introduce the cracks control technique by employing low-heat cement mix and thermal stress analysis. Secondly it show the application condition of the cracks control technique like the subway structure in Seoul.

Effect of Cementitious Materials on Compressive Strength and Self-healing Properties of Cement Mortars Containing Chitosan-Based Polymer

  • Concrete is widely used in the construction industry; however, it has the disadvantage of deteriorating durability due to cracks occurring because of climate change and shrinkage. In addition, when cement is used as a binder, CO2 emitted during the manu-facturing process accounts for ~8% of global CO2 emissions. In this study, ecofriendly cementitious materials such as blast furnace slag powder and fly ash (FA) were used as cement substitutes in the production of mortar containing a chitosan-based polymer (CP), and their fluidity, compressive strength, and self-healing performance were examined. The 28-day compressive strength of the control sample was ~32.4 MPa (the lowest for all tested samples), while that of the sample containing 5% CP and 20% FA was ~49.6 MPa (the highest for all tested samples) and ~53.1% higher than that of the control sample. Even at a healing age of 56 days, the control sample exhibited the lowest healing performance, whereas the samples containing CP (5%, 10%) and 20% FA demonstrated excellent healing performance. After 28 days, the decrease in crack size for the control sample was minimal; however, for the sample containing only cement and CP, a significant decrease in crack size was observed even after 28 days. This study confirmed that the appropriate use of CP and cementitious materials improves not only compressive strength but also the selfhealing performance of mortar.

An Analytic Study on Early aged Freezing Damage Prevention and Thermal Crack Control of Concrete in Cold-Weathering Mat Foundation Construction (동절기 매트기초공사시 콘크리트의 초기동해방지 및 온도충격제어에 관한 해석적 연구)

  • This study is peformed for checking the limitation and application of each curing/heating methods on cold-weathering mat foundation construction, considering temperature control, early strength security and temperature declination range limit, by means of concrete material properties and thermal analysis technique that were published previously. In the result of this analysis, we checked the open air temperature and mat depth that are possible to apply each curing/heating methods on cold-weathering construction and found curing/heating time of each methods that is able to prevent early aged freezing damage and thermal crack

Optimal Sawcutting Methods for Hydrating Concrete Pavements

  • The details of an approach to account for the factors that have been found to affect the ability and the probability to control cracking due to sawcutting in newly constructed concrete pavements are presented. Several factors such as material strength parameters, method and quality of curing, slab and subbase stiffness, and concrete shrinkage affect the probability of crack initiation. Others are relevant to concrete mixture characteristics that affect development of early aged stresses caused by shrinkage and thermally induced contraction. This paper presents the results of a probabilistic analysis of the factors that affect crack control using sawcut notches. Cost analyses on both conventional and early-entry sawcutting methods are shown to support the results of the probabilistic analysis. From both an operational and cost standpoint, it is evident for the environmental conditions considered that early-entry sawcut methodology holds a significant advantage over conventional methods.

  • Recently, the design and construction of massive concrete structures are increased, But, the temperature rise within a large concrete mass makes the construction of massive concrete structures be very difficult. Therefore, various techniques of the thermal stress control of the mass concrete have been widely used. One of them is pipe-cooling which reduces the temperature of concrete with flowing water. It was shown to be possible to construct the massive concrete foundation of urban bridge successfully by application of pipe-cooling system with steel pipe and water circulation. It was also found to expected to make it possible to reduce the probability of thermal crack development in a massive concrete foundation of urban bridge by pipe-cooling system.

  • Recently, the attention is paid to the problem of thermal crack by hydration heat according to the increase of high strength and mass concrete structures. At this point, various research has been carried out for the control of hydration heat in high strength and mass concrete. As a part of the research, it was investigated application of hydration heat reduction agent (HR) for the control of thermal crack by hydration heat in this study. To investigate the application, it was selected HR which can reduce hydration heat of concrete with effect in series I and II. Also, it was investigated the characteristics of hydration heat generation of low heat concrete using HR with binder types in seriesIII.
