  • Deformation of rock masses is not only related to rock itself, but also related to discontinuities, the latter maybe greater. Study on crack propagation at discontinuities is important to reveal the damage law of rock masses. DDARF is a discontinuous deformation analysis method for rock failure and some modified algorithms are proposed in this study. Firstly, coupled modeling methods of AutoCAD-DDARF and ANSYS-DDARF are introduced, which could improve the modeling efficiency of DDARF compared to its original program. Secondly, a convergence criterion for automatically judging the computation equilibrium is established, it could overcome subjective drawbacks of ending one calculation by time steps. Lastly but not the least, relationship between the super relaxation factor and the calculation convergence is analyzed, and reasonable value range of the super relaxation factor is obtained. Based on these above modified programs, influences on crack propagation of joint angle, joint parameters and geo-stresses' side pressure are studied.

  • In this study, we investigate the feasibility of in-situ crack propagation by using a double cleavage drilled compression (DCDC) specimen showing a slow crack velocity down to 0.03 mm/s under 0.01 mm/s of displacement control. Finite element analysis predicted that the DCDC specimens would show at least 4.3 fold delayed crack initiation time than conventional tensile fracture specimens under a constant loading speed. Using DCDC specimens, we were able to observe the in-situ crack propagation process in a particle reinforced transparent polymer composite. Our results confirmed that the DCDC specimen would be a good candidate for the in-situ observation of the behavior of particle reinforced composites with slow crack velocity, such as the self-healing process of micro-particle reinforced composites.

  • A simple numerical scheme suitable for tracing the fracture propagation path for structures idealized by means of Hillerborg's classical cohesive crack model is presented. A direct collocation, multidomain boundary element method is adopted for the required space discretization. The algorithm proposed is necessarily iterative in nature since the crack itinerary is a priori unknown. The fracture process is assumed to be governed by a path-dependent generally nonlinear softening law. The potentialities of the method are illustrated through two examples.

  • Because of the existence of stress interaction field made by other defects and propagating cracks, the structure may be weakened. Therefore in this study, the crack behavior in the interaction field made by two different cracks is studied experimentally. In the experiment, vertical distance between two cracks and applied stress are varied to make different stress interacted field. In addition, the effect of plastic zone is used to examine crack propagation path and rate. Three types of crack propagation in the interacted field were found, and crack propagating path and rate of two cracks were significantly changed according to different applied stress as each crack propagates. And the results are attributed to the effect of the size and shape of the plastic zone.

  • In characteristics of fatigue crack propagation, it is important that fatigue life is affected by crack closure phenomenon in thin sheet Al alloy. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the characteristics of fatigue crack propagation in constant loading condition for sheet Al 2024-T3 alloy of two sort of thickness and identify the difference of fatigue life in thin sheet specimen comparing experimental results of thin sheet specimen and relatively thick sheet specimen under same fatigue loading condition. In applying fatigue related material constants from fatigue crack propagation analysis, we attempt to operate the fatigue life estimating process of thin sheet specimen by modified Paris‘ law considering crack closure phenomenon and analyze the experimental and prediction results of fatigue life in thin sheet Al alloy.

  • The fatigue life of ship structure under cyclic loading condition is made up of initiation and propagation stages. In this study, crack growth test is carried out on large scale structure test specimens and fracture mechanical analysis is performed. The fatigue lives measured from fatigue tests are compared with DNV, Matsuoka and BS 5400 S-N curve. And to predict the crack initiation life, S-N curve, corresponding to crack length 20mm at welded joint, is developed based on hot spot stress range. Also crack propagation life is calculated using crack growth equation. Consequently, computed crack propagation life is compared with experiment results.

  • Sheet aluminum alloys have been used in manufacturing of machine structures. In fatigue crack propagation behavior of thin sheet aluminum alloys, it is important that fatigue crack growth rate is affected by crack closure phenomenon. In this work, we analyzed the characteristics of fatigue crack propagation behavior in experiment of constant stress condition for thin sheet Al 2024-T3 alloys, and identified the retardation behavior of crack growth by comparing experimental results of thin and thick plate specimen. We attempt to operate the fatigue life estimating process using the fatigue related material constants from referred fatigue crack propagation analysis. And we analyzed the experimental and prediction results of fatigue life of thin sheet aluminum alloy in order to identify the relation between retardation behavior of fatigue crack growth and crack closure phenomenon.

  • Most cracks in the structure occur under mixed mode loading and those fatigue crack propagation behavior heavily depends on the stress ratio. So, it is necessary to study the fatigue behavior under mixed mode loading as the stress ratio changes. In this paper, the fatigue crack propagation behavior was respectively investigated at stress ratio 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, 0.7 and we changed the loading application angle into 0$^{\circ}$, 30$^{\circ}$, 60$^{\circ}$ to apply various loading mode. The mode I and II stress intensity factor of CTS specimen used in this study was calculated by the displacement extrapolation method using FEM (ABAQUS). Using both the experiment and FEM analysis, we have concluded the relationship between crack propagation rate and stress intensity factor range at each loading mode due to the variation of stress ratio. Also, when the crack propagated under given stress ratio and loading mode condition, we have concluded the dominant factors of the crack propagation rate at each case.

  • The fatigue crack propagation tests were performed in triangular and holding-time stress waveforms at $650^{\circ}C$. The behavior of fatigue crack propagation was investigated according to waveform. The analysis of high temperature fatigue crack propagation by the stress intensity factor range ${\Delta}K$, elastic fracture mechanics parameter, was not available. The behaviors of high temperature fatigue crack propagation by the J-integral(${\Delta}J_f$, J' and ${\Delta}J_c$), elasto-plastic fracture mechanics parameter, were investigated in a number of stress waveforms. The fast-fast waveform exhibited cycle-dependent(fatigue type), the slow-fast and the hold time with 500sec waveforms appear to be time-dependent(creep type) and the fast-slow and the hold time with 5, 25sec waveforms exhibited conbined behavior of both types(fatigue-creep conbined type).

  • The variables relating to the fatigue behavior have uncertainty and are random. The fatigue crack propagation is, thus, stochastic in nature. In this study, fatigue experiments are performed on the specimen of the magnesium alloy AZ31. The data of the fatigue life are scattered even in the same experimental condition. It is necessary to determine the probability distribution of the fatigue crack propagation life for the reliability analysis as well as the design and maintenance of structural components. Therefore the statistics and the probability distribution for the fatigue crack propagation life are investigated and the best fit probability distribution of that is proposed in this paper.
