Laboratory tests are performed in this paper to investigate the brittle failure characteristics of over-stressed rocks taken in deep depth. Also, numerical simulation performed using that the so-called CWFS(Cohesion Weakening Frictional Strengthening) model is known to predict brittle failure phenomenon reasonably well. The most typical rock types of Korean peninsula - granite and gneiss - were used for testing. Results of uniaxial compression tests showed that the crack initiation stress was about 41 % to 42% of the uniaxial compressive strength regardless of rock types, where as, the crack damage stress of granite was about 75%, and that of gneiss was about 97%. Through the damage-controlled test, strength parameters of each rock were obtained as a function of damage degree. After the peak, the crack damage stress and the maximum stress were decreased, The cohesion was decreased and the friction angle was increased with increase of rock damage. Before reaching the peak, the elastic modulus was slightly increased, while decreased after the peak. Poisson's ratio was increased as the damage of rock proceeds. Comparison of uniaxial compression tests and damage-controlled tests shows the crack initiation stress estimated from the damage-controlled test fluctuated within the range of crack initiation stress obtained from the uniaxial compression test; the crack damage stress was less than that estimated from the uniaxial compression test. In order to predict the critical depth that brittle failure occurs, numerical simulations using the CWFS model were performed for an example site. Material parameters obtained from the laboratory tests mentioned above were used for CWFS simulation. Comparison between the critical depth predicted from the numerical simulation using the CWFS model and that predicted by using the damage index proposed by Martin et al.(l999), showed that critical depth cannot be reasonably predicted by the currently used damage index except for circular tunnels. A modified damage index was proposed by the author which takes the shape of tunnels other than circular into account.
This paper is to evaluate fracture characteristics of API 2W Gr.50 TMCP steel weldment typically applied for offshore structures, with the focus on the influence of heat input arising from flux cored arc welding. Based on the results and insights developed from this study, it is found that the toughness for both CTOD and impact exhibits a tendency to decrease as the weld heat input increases. The reheated zone of weldmetal exhibit lower hardness than solidified zone and microstructure that are liable to affect the toughness are acicular ferrite and martensite-austenite constituents (M-A). In particular, M-A is a more effective micro-phase for CTOD toughness than impact toughness.
In the case of an urban rail chopper type subway train, varistors have been installed for protecting usual electronic equipments, semiconductor devices(diodes, transistors, thyrister, etc.) communications, measuring, control device and absorbing opening & closing surge of electromagnetic valve. These varistors were steadily reduced dielectric strength as becoming superannuated. Thus there is a problem that reacts more sensitive at the same surge in the general control operation. On existing maintenance, there is not specific standard to replace superannuated varistor. So when maintaining chopper type subway train, all varistors or old varistors that workers checked a discoloration & crack with the naked eye and noticed degradation smell by deterioration are replaced. This study suggests detail standards for judgement that varistors are good or bad chopper type subway train, and it draw a efficient maintenance which efficient maintenance can check more easy the degradation properties variation.

The compressive residual stress, which is induced by shot peening process, seems to be an Important factor in increasing the fatigue strength. And then it was showed that residual stress was disappearenced at the high temperature. The fatigue charateristic investigation of a SUP9 spring steel processed shot peening is performed by considering the high temperature service conditions in the range of room temperature through $180^{\circ}C$ in the range of stress ratio of 0.3 by means of opening mode displacement. The fatigue resistance characteristics and fracture strength at high temperature is considerable lower than that of room temperature in the early stage and stable of fatigue crack growth region.

To analysis the failure character of Low-Heat concrete which is used to prevent the thermal crack caused by hydration heat, static loading test was performed by this test method, "Determination of the Fracture Energy of Motar and Concrete by Means of Three-Point Band Tests on Notched Beam" (suggested by RILEM 50-FMC Committe). This study compared and analysised the fracture energy of Mode I (opening mode), the most general pattern in the view of water-cemente ratio(W/C), compressive strength and age of Ordinary Portland Concrete and Low-Heat Concrete under the same mixture. The test results show that the case of Ordinary Portland Concrete and Low-Heat Concrete, low Water-Cemente ratio(W/C) cause the increase of fracture energy, and high failure-strength decrease failure-deflection, and the fracture energy of Low-Heat Concrete is similar to Ordinary Portland Concrete as the age increase. increase.

Ultra high performance concrete (UHPC) is a relatively new cementitous material, which has been developed to give significantly higher material performance than conventional concrete or engineered cementitious composites. In this study, reverse analysis of notched UHPC beam was conducted according to the experimental result of load-displacement. Conclusively, tensile strength vs. CMOD (Crack Mouth Opening Displacement) was calculated as an approximated method for the direct tensile strength estimation.

The interfacial adhesive joining characteristics of the foams are very important for the structural integrity of sandwich structures. Peel strength is one of the best criteria for the interfacial characteristics of the sandwich structures and peel energy is most commonly used for the interfacial characteristics. The peel strength is the first peak force per unit width of bond line required to produce progressive separation by the wedge or other crack opening type action of two adherends where one or both undergo significant bending and the peel energy is the surface active energy per unit width of bond line. In this work, to investigate the strengthening effect of resin treatment on the interfacial surface of foam material, peel strength and peel energy of epoxy resin treated polyurethane foam core sandwich structures were obtained by the cleavage peel tests and compared with those of non surface treated polyurethane foam core sandwich structures.

The relationship between structural geometry and number of life cycles to failure is investigated to improve the fatigue life of structural components. The linear elastic fracture mechanics(LEFM) approach is integrated with shape optimal design methodology. The primary objective of this study is to decide an optimal shape for enhancing the life of the structure. The results from LEFM analyses are used in the fatigue model to predict the life of the structure before failure is occurred. The shape of the structure is optimized by using the growth strain method. Relevant issues such as problem formulation, finite element modeling are explained. Three design examples are solved, and the results show that, with proper shape changes, the life of structural systems subjected to fatigue loads can be enhanced significantly.
This article employs Support Vector Machine (SVM) for determination of fracture parameters critical stress intensity factor ($K^s_{Ic}$) and the critical crack tip opening displacement ($CTOD_c$) of concrete. SVM that is firmly based on the theory of statistical learning theory, uses regression technique by introducing ${\varepsilon}$-insensitive loss function has been adopted. The results are compared with a widely used Artificial Neural Network (ANN) model. Equations have been also developed for prediction of $K^s_{Ic}$ and $CTOD_c$. A sensitivity analysis has been also performed to investigate the importance of the input parameters. The results of this study show that the developed SVM is a robust model for determination of $K^s_{Ic}$ and $CTOD_c$ of concrete.
