Grinding of WC-${Cr_3}{C_2}$-$Mo_2$$C-Ni Based Carbide (WC-${Cr_3}{C_2}$-$Mo_2$$C-Ni계 초경합금의 연삭)

  • $WC-3%(Cr_3C_2)-2%(Mo_2C)-12%Ni$ carbides were ground with three different types of electroplated diamond wheels with respect to grain friability. The grinding ratio in the case of the highest toughness grains, A becomes the highest at the workpiece speeds of 40 and 70mm/min exhibiting larger effect with smaller workpiece speed. The grinding ratio with the medium toughness grain is higher than that of grain A at higher workpiece speeds than 100mm/min. The surface roughness becomes smaller with increasing the grain friability The increasing rate on surface roughness with the increase of workpiece speed becomes higher with using the grain of lower friability.

The Effect of Destabilization Heat Treatment on the Carbide and Matrix Microstructures of 3%C-18%Cr-1%Mo-2%Ni-1%Mn High Chromium Cast Iron (3%C-18%Cr-1%Mo-2%Ni-1%Mn 고크롬백주철의 탄화물 및 기지조직에 미치는 불안정화열처리의 영향)

  • 3%C-18%Cr-1%Mo-2%Ni-1%Mn high chromium cast iron was casted and destabilized at temperatures of 900, 1000 and $1100^{\circ}C$ for 1, 2, 4 and 8hr under $N_2$atmosphere to observe the effect of destabilization temperature and time on the carbide and matrix structures. In as-cast condition, the microstructure consisted of $M_{ 7}$$C_3$ carbides and matrix structures which were composed of 91.50% austenite and 8.50% martensite. Numerous fine secondary carbides were observed in the specimens destabilized at $900^{\circ}C$ for 1, 2, 4 and 8hr. But, the number of secondary carbides were much reduced with the increased destabilization temperature. More austenite was formed in the matrix with the higher destabilization temperature. The amounts of austenite in the matrix were 4.23% at $900^{\circ}C$, 29.68% at $1000^{\circ}C$ and 66.51% at$ 1100^{\circ}C$, respectively. However, the effect of destabilization time on the secondary carbide and matrix was very weak compared with that of destabilization temperature. The ranges of the amount of austenite in the matrix from 1hr to 8hr destabilization heat treatment were: 3.95%-4.35% at $900^{\circ}C$, 28.89%-30.15% at $1000^{\circ}C$ and 65.13%-67.12% at $1100^{\circ}C$, respectively. The variation ranges were very narrow. The equilibrium concentration of C and Cr in austenite was already reached within 1hr during destabilization heat treatment. After an attainment of the equilibrium concentration of C and Cr in austenite, no more secondary carbide was precipitated from the matrix.

Wear Resistance Characteristics of Iron System MAG Weld Overlays with Chromium and Niobium Carbide Composite (Cr 및 Nb 복합탄화물에 의한 철계 MAG용접 오버fp이의 내마모 특성)

  • Overlays is a treatment of the surface and near-surface regions of a material to allow the surface to perform functions that are distinct from those frictions demanded far the bulk of the material. Welding, thermal spray, quenching, carburizing and nitration have been used as the surface treatment. Especially, weld overlay is a relatively thick layer of filler metal applied to a carbon or low-alloy steel base metal for the purpose of providing a wear resistant surface. In this study, weld overlay was performed by MAG welding on the base metal(SS400) with filler metal which contain composite powders($Cr_3C_2+Mn+Mo+NbC$) and solid wire(JIS-YGW11). Characteristics of hardness and wear resistance on overlays were analyzed by EDS, EPMA, XRD and microstructures. Carbide formations were $M(Cr, Fe)_7C_3$ and NbC phases. And carbide volume fraction, hardness and specific wear resistance of overlays were increased with increasing powder feed rate and decreasing wire fred rate. Hardness and wear resistance were almost proportioned to carbide volume fraction of overlay.

스파타링에 의한 탄화티탄 피복에 관한 연구

  • The standrd electrolyte for the electrodeposition of chromium were preparwith reagent grade chromic acid(200g/L), sulfuric acid(pH=1.8)and oxalic acalic acid(640g/L)as additive. Carbon content in chromium plating varied about2.0-3.8 wt% with current density and temperatures of the bath. The hardeness of chromium platings incresed with increasing the annealing temperatures and showed maximum value of about Hv 1700 after annealing at$ 700^{\circ}C$for 60min. But, decreased it as annealing at above $700^{\circ}C$. The reason for varing thee hardness of chromium codeposited with carbon gradually foumed chromium carbide(Cr7C3), but that changed to Cr23C6 as annealing temperature at above $^700{\circ}C$. The X-ray diffraction pattern indicated that chromium carbides, such as Cr7C3 or Cr3C2, formed at formed at above $300^{\circ}C$. titanium coating sputtered on the on surface of chromium plating had performed and determined the hardness after annealing at 500, 600, $700^{\circ}C$ for 60min. the maximum hardeness was about Hv 2400 as annealing at $700^{\circ}C$. The titanium carbide formed in layer was identified by X-ray diffraction. It was confirmed that chromium and titanium carbide has effect of increasing the hardness.

Effects of Carbide and Matrix Structures on Abrasion Wear Resistance of Multi-Component White Cast Iron (다합금계 백주철의 탄화물 및 기지조직이 내마모성에 미치는 영향)

  • The effects of carbide and matrix structures on the abrasion wear resistance of multi-component white cast irons with 3.0 mass%C have been studied in this paper. Four different heats were poured in order to obtain the specimens with different combinations of the carbide structures: a basic iron(3.0 mass%C-5.0 mass%Cr-5.0 mass%V-5.0 mass% Mo-12.5mass%W)for M$_{6}$C and M$_{7}$C$_{3}$ carbides, and a Cr free iron(3.0 mass%C-5.0 mass%V-2.5mass%Mo-12.5 mass%W) for MC and M6C carbides. A conventional high Cr free free iron(3.0 mass%C-5.0 mass%V-2.5 mass%Mo-12.5 mass%W) for MC and M6C carbides. A conventional high Cr white cast iron was also poured to compare its wear resistance with those of the multi-component white cast irons. In the as-cast condition, the range of abrasive wear rate(Rw=mg/min) was from 4.15 to 5.98 . The lowest Rw, which means the highest wear resistance, was obtained in the basic iron with nodular MC, lamellar M$_{2}$C and cellular M$_{7}$C$_{3}$ carbides. On the other hand, the Rw of the high Cr white cast iron ranked between the basic iron and the Mo and W free iron. In each alloy, the Rw of air hardened or tempered specimen was lower than that of the as-cast one because of the change of matrix structures by the heat treatments. The Rw of the hear treated speci-mens increased in the order Mo and W free iron, basic iron, Cr free iron, high Cr iron, and V free iron.n.n.n.

  • In repaired weldment of ASTM A-470 class 8 high pressure stream turbine rotor steel, creep rupture life was studied in relation with carbide morphology. Carbides were identified using carbide extraction replica method. A retired rotor has molybdenum rich carbide $M_2C$, lndacochea vanadium rich carbide $M_4C_3$, and chromium rich carbides $M_{23}C_6$and $M_7C_3$. Weldments ruptured at ICHAZ showed that some of carbides have been transformed into spherical types of coarsened carbides at ruptured area. Those carbides were revealed as molybdenum rich $M_6C$ carbide and they provided cavitation sites due to molybdenum depletion around $(M_6C)$ carbide. However coarsened $M_6C$ and $M_{23}C_6$ carbides were observed at ruptured area in case of ruptured at CGHAZ.

A study of CrC Sputtering as an Alternative Method for Cr Electroplating (전해 크롬도금 대체용으로서의 CrC 스퍼터링에 관한 연구)

  • Chromium carbide films were deposited on high speed steels using a Cr_3C_2$ target by magnetron sputtering. Effects of the deposition parameters (power, Ar pressure and substrate temperature) on deposition rates and surface roughnesses of the films were investigated. The morphologies of those films were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. The grain size of the samples deposited using dc-power is larger than that using equivalent rf-power. The hardness of the sample increases with increasing rf-power, whereas the elastic modulus nearly does not change with rf-power. The optimum sputter deposition conditions for chromium carbide on high speed steels in the corrosion resistance aspect were found to be the rf-power with small roughness.

A Study on Wear Properties of Plasma Sprayed $Cr_3C_2$-NiCr Coating at High Temperature (크롬탄화물 용사피막의 고온마모 특성연구)

  • The plasma sprayed $Cr_3C_2$-NiCr coatings are widely used as wear-resistant and corrosion-resistant materials. The mechanical and wear properties of the plasma sprayed $Cr_3C_2$-NiCr coating on steel plate were examined in this study. The pore in the coatings could be classified into two types, the one is the intrinsic pore originated from the spraying powder, the other is the extrinsic pore formed during spraying. During the tensile adhesion test, the fracture occured at the interface of top coating and bond coating. It is though that the compressive residual stress increases with the increase of the top coating thickness. From the wear test, it was found that the wear rate increased with the increase of the sliding velocity regardless of the temperature. It is thought that the fracture toughness reduces with the increase of the sliding velocity at $30^{\circ}C$ and that the adhesion amount increases with the increase of the sliding velocity at $400^{\circ}C$ It is concluded that the wear mechanism at $30^{\circ}C$ is the fracture and pull-out of the carbide particles due to the fatigue on sliding surface, while the wear mechanism at $400^{\circ}C$ is the adhesion of the smeared layer formed during wear process.

Effect of Alloying Elements and Homogenization Treatment on Carbide Formation Behavior in M2 High Speed Steels (합금성분변화와 균질화처리에 따른 M2 고속도강의 탄화물 형성거동)

  • In the present study, the effect of variation in alloying elements on the carbide formation behavior during casting and homogenization treatment of M2 high speed steels was investigated. M2 high speed steels of various compositions were produced by vacuum induction melting. Contents of C, Cr, W, Mo, and V were varied from the basic composition of 0.8C, 0.3Si, 0.2Mn, 4.0Cr, 6.0W, 5.0Mo, and 2.0V in weight percent. Homogenization treatment at $1150^{\circ}C$ for 1.5 hr followed by furnace cooling was performed on the ingots. Area fraction and chemical compositions of eutectic carbide in as-cast and homogenized ingots were analyzed. Area fraction of eutectic carbide appeared to be higher in the ingots with higher contents of alloying elements the area fraction of eutectic carbide also appeared to be higher on the surface regions than in the center regions of ingots. As a result of the homogenization treatment, $M_2C$ carbide, which was the primary eutectic carbide in the as-cast ingots, decomposed into thermodynamically stable carbides, MC and $M_6C$. The latter carbide was found to be the main one after homogenization. Fine carbides uniformly distributed in the matrix was found to be MC type carbide and coarsened by homogenization.

Microstructural and Mechanical Characteristics of In Situ Synthesized Chromium-Nickel-Graphite Composites

  • Cr-C-Ni composites were synthesized in situ from elemental powders of Cr, Ni and C by high energy milling followed by reactive sintering. The milled powders with the grain size in nano-scale were pressed to compacts and sintered. During the following thermal treatment at first the chromium carbide was formed and then the $Cr_3C_2-Ni$ cermets were sintered in one cycle. The interface between the binder phase and the carbide grains of the in situ composite has a good bonding strength as it is not contaminated with oxidation films or other detrimental surface reactions.
