  • During the monolayer assembly of zeolite microcrystals using sonication with stacking (SS) method, the factors that govern the degree of close packing (DCP) between the microcrystals, the rate of attachment (rA) of microcrystals onto the substrate, the degree of coverage (DOC), and the binding strength (BS) between each crystal and the substrate were investigated for each mode of binding linkage (MBL). The tested MBLs were covalent linkage (CL), ionic linkage (IL), and polyelectrolyte-mediated ionic linkage (p-IL). Unlike the monolayers of zeolite crystals assembled on glass with a covalent linkage, the strong BS, very high DOC, and very high DCP do not decrease during monolayer assembly on glass through ionic linkages. This results indicate that the surface migration of crystals undergo linkage-nondestructively when crystals were attached to the substrates through ionic linkages.

  • MFI structural zeolite (ZSM-5 or Sililcalite) was treated with HF solution to introduce mesoporous channels in the microporous crystals. Inner mesopore size could be controlled from 2.5 to 3.5 nm by changing the concentration of HF solution. The pore structure of HF-treated MFI zeolite was studied by instrumental analysis. The active Co (III) salen complex monomers were successfully anchored non-covalently on the surfaces of mesoporous MFI-type zeolite. These heterogeneous catalysts could be applied in asymmetric ring opening of terminal epoxides by phenol derivatives. It showed very high enantioselectivity and yield up to 95% in the catalytic synthesis of optically active $\alpha$-aryloxy alcohol compounds.

  • Molecular imprinting has now been established as a technique which allows the creation of tailor-made binding sites for many classes of compounds. MIPs were prepared by covalent and non-covalent chemical bonding systems, by interactions between functional monomer and template. The shape of MIP is divided to particle and membrane. MIP membranes can be prepared by surface imprinting, in-situ polymerization, wet phase inversion and the dry phase inversion method. MIPs have been mainly used for analytical separation and biosensor systems to separate and detect chiral compounds and materials with similar structures. However the application of MIP by the chemical industries is still in its infancy stages. This review summarizes the preparative characteristics and applications of MIP with respect to chiral separations and biosensors.

  • An imprinting technique with labile covalent interactions has been developed in the design of new polymer catalysts. The template monomer 2 was prepared and copolymerized with DVB or EDMA to provide the polymer with a cavity having the shape of th e transition state of the reaction as well as binding sites for the substrate and catalytic functionalities. The rate of hydrolysis of diphenyl carbonate (1) in the presence of the imprinted polymer IP-DVB-THF was found to be 120 times faster than the background uncatalyzed reaction. A Km of 32 mM and a kcat of 1.8 ${\times}$ 10-3min-1 were observed from Michaelis-Menten kinetics with the imprinted polymer IP-DVB-THF.

  • In this work, we discuss where the failure of Kohn-Sham Density Functional Theory (DFT) occurs in weak interactions. We have adopted density-corrected density functional calculations and dispersion correction separately to find out whether the failure is due to density-driven error or functional error. The results of Benzene Ar complex, one of the most common examples of van der Waals interactions, show that DFT calculations of van der Waals interaction suffer from functional error, rather than density-driven error. In addition, errors in DFT calculations of the S22 dataset, which contains small to relatively large (30 atoms) complexes with non-covalent interactions, are governed by functional errors.

  • We are exposed to numerous xenobiotic electrophiles on a daily basis through the environment, lifestyle, and dietary habits. Although such reactive species have been associated with detrimental effects, recent accumulated evidence indicates that xenobiotic electrophiles appear to act as signaling molecules. In this review, we introduce our findings on 1) activation of various redox signaling pathways involved in cell proliferation, detoxification/excretion of electrophiles, quality control of cellular proteins, and cell survival during exposure to xenobiotic electrophiles at low concentrations through covalent modification of thiol groups in sensor proteins, and 2) negative regulation of reactive sulfur species (RSS) in the modulation of redox signaling and toxicity caused by xenobiotic electrophiles.

  • The ${\pi}-{\pi}$ interactions of the peptide-dimer and peptide-trimer complexes were investigated in the (VQIVYK + LYQLEN) and (VQIVYK + NNQQNY) mixing solutions. The results showed that tyrosine (Y) residues were critical in the formation of hetero peptide-dimers and -trimers during the early oligomerization process. We used collision-induced dissociation (CID) along with electrospray ionization mass spectroscopy (ESI-MS) to obtain the structural information of the hetero-dimers and -trimers. We chose three amyloidogenic peptides-VQIVYK, NNQQNY, and LYQLEN-from tau protein, yeast prion-like protein Sup35, and insulin chain A, respectively. Hetero-dimer, -trimer, -tetramer, and -pentamer complexes were observed in the mass spectra. The tandem mass spectrum of the hetero-dimer and hetero-trimer showed two different fragmentation patterns (covalent and non-covalent bond dissociation). Y-Y interaction structures were also proposed for the hetero-dimer and -trimer complexes.

  • We report that the novel covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are capable of reversibly providing an extremely high uptake capacity of carbon dioxide and hydrogen at room temperature. These COFs are designed based on the multiscale simulations approach via the combination of ab initio calculations and force-field calculations. For this goal, we explore the adsorption sites of carbon dioxide and hydrogen on COFs, their porosity, as well as carbon dioxide adsorption isotherms. We identify the binding sites and energies of $CO_2$ on COFs using ab initio calculations and obtain the carbon dioxide adsorption isotherms using grand canonical ensemble Monte Carlo calculations. Moreover, the calculated adsorption isotherms are compared with the experimental values in order to build the reference model in describing the interactions between the $CO_2/H_2$ and the COFs and in predicting the $CO_2$ and $H_2$ adsorption isotherms of COFs. Finally, we design three new COFs, 2D COF-05, 3D COF-05 (ctn), and 3D COF-05 (bor), for the high capacity $CO_2/H_2$ and $H_2$ storage.
