  • The goal of this study is to improve the competitiveness of professional librarians in society. To this end, we analyzed domestic and international LIS curriculum, determined demand from field librarians through a survey, carried out job analysis by library types, and developed an operating model for LIS curriculum by synthesizing all of these results. Finally, we suggested a course of study for civil service librarians based on this model. As a result, the six required courses for civil service librarians are: Introduction to Library and Information Science, Information Organization, Information Services (Reference and Information Services), Library Management, Information Retrieval, and Field Work. The four core courses for the civil service concentration are: Collection Development, Information Sources by Subjects, Public Library Management, and Digital Libraries. Suggested electives best suited to this career path include Using Web Resources, Information Literacy, Information Services in Culturally Diverse Communities, Library Marketing, Libraries and Cultural Programs, Reading Guidance, Library History, Small Library Management, Studies in Library Buildings, Library Cooperation, Managing Digital Collections, and Information and Communication in a Digital Age.

  • This study aims to investigate factors affecting eBook acceptance and learning outcomes among students experiencing online distance learning. As conventional textbooks are now switched into eBooks, the effects of contextual factors including lecturer, student computer competency, content and design of the course, access ability, infrastructure, and university support on eBook acceptance and learning outcome needs to be evaluated. The sample of this study is represented by students at the Universiti Teknologi MARA, City Campus Melaka, undertaking 'strategic management course'. Non-probability random sampling was selected as the sampling technique and a purposive sampling method was chosen to select the samples. The samples comprised 171 students randomly selected through Google Form. The questionnaire data was analyzed by using PLS-SEM. The results indicated that these factors contributed 62.3% variations in the eBook acceptance and 67.1% variations in the learning outcomes. The strongest factor affecting both dependent variables was content and design of course. Managerial implication suggested that the content for all courses taught through the eBook platform needs to be revisited and improved in accordance with the mode of online deliverance. Tutorial on how to navigate the eBook platform is important to all users as this would enhance acceptance and produce better learning outcomes among students.

  • This study was designed to enhance preservice teachers' self-efficacy beliefs and pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) through scientific investigations based on current science education reforms. To do so, a science methods course was revised to include modeling effective scientific inquiry practices as well as designing and teaching scientific investigations in the K-5 practicum classrooms (Revised Science Methods Course). This study assessed the following research questions: (1) What level of PCK do preservice teachers have before and after the completion of RSMC; (2) To what extent do participants change their self-efficacy in science teaching after completing RSMC; and (3) Is there any correlation between participants' changes in self-efficacy and the level of PCK. Participants were 76 preservice teachers enrolled in a science methods course offered at a medium-sized university in the midwestern United States. This study employed the STEBI-B survey and the PCK rubric. There result of the study indicated that there was significant increase in Personal Science Teaching Efficacy (PSTE) of the participant preservice teachers after the completion of the course. Based on the PCK rubric analysis, there was a significant increase in mean scores of the post-RSMC lesson compared to those of the pre-RSMC lesson. The correlational analysis of participants showed a positive correlation between changes in self-efficacy and the level of PCK. Thus, it may be concluded that the reform-based science methods course had a positive impact on participants' self-efficacy in science teaching through correcting misconceptions, developing higher level of PCK, and modeling scientific investigation in their practicum schools.

  • This study develops and applies a service learning course that integrates university curriculum with the local community in housing and interior design. The results of the study are as follows. First, the service learning course of the housing and interior design was developed as a six-week lecture based on the project model with the theme of housing for the socially disadvantaged. Second, this course was implemented with faculty, students, interior designers, and service recipients to engage in activities to improve the educational environment of local child centers. Next, students engaged in the service learning course and continuously conducted reflection activities to enhance the effectiveness of learning. In reflection activities, students assessed that self-directed capabilities increased as has employing the coordination and applicability to meet identified community needs. Finally, faculty, students, and experts (including institutional experts and supervising departments) evaluated course practice and educational outcomes. Experts assessed that the course clarified course objectives, utilized various learning strategies, and showed that the structural reflection mode of learners and professors was overwhelmingly positive. The results indicated that service-learning courses enable students to integrate academic study with social work to better understand course content through direct engagements in experience learning. Furthermore, students are empowered by participation in public services that benefit service clients and consultants as students take more personal responsibility for learning.

  • Amid the increasing interest in medical humanities education, this study developed a medical humanities course that utilized design thinking to foster creative thinking, problem-solving, and collaboration skills that pre-medical students should possess. The course's efficacy was assessed by evaluating improvements in core design thinking skills. The present study was conducted among 83 first-year medical students after planning and implementing a design thinking course. The reflection journals written by students along the course of the class were examined using the template analysis technique to evaluate the effectiveness of the class. The study's primary findings showed the successful development of step-by-step medical humanities education content utilizing design thinking and its practical implementation in a class. Moreover, the course improved students' core design thinking skills effectively, and in a balanced way. These results illustrate the effective application of design thinking in medical school through a medical humanities course. These findings indicate that a medical humanities course can help medical students showcase their abilities to collaborate and solve problems in the real world. This paper suggests the need for further research to develop a curriculum that integrates design thinking and investigate the relationship between medical students' core competencies and design thinking-based courses.

  • It seems that the education of environment in a discipline of morality has not been systematically given in the middle school. In the Seventh Course of education, the aim of moral education for the middle school has no content concerning environment. And there is no chapter of environment in all the textbooks for the first, second and third grade in the middle school. The content of environment is largely introduced in order to explain a series of key content in the chapters of discussing 'personality', 'courtesy of neighborhood', 'conflict of value', 'civil morality' and so on. Even we can say that its descriptions are aimless, instrumental and secondary for education. Recently, it is no exaggeration to say that the education of environment is not effectively carried out in a discipline of morality of the middle school. In the 2007 revised course of education, there are some content of environment in the aim of morality and its education, and a chapter of "environment and Morality" is newly established. From now on, a new textbook of morality is being made according to the currently revised course of education. It will be gradually useful for the first grade in 2010, for the second grade in 2011, and for the third grade in 2012. It is possible to say that it will add momentum to effectively carrying out the education of environment as part of a discipline of morality in the middle school. Taking it into a detailed consideration, however, the education of environment in this revised course of education cannot help including a serious problem, either. This is because, a chapter of environment is included only in the first grade of middle school, and, according to a prescription of writing criterion established by the Ministry of Science and Technology, there can be no overlapping content for each grade. It will more likely that the education of environment will be given only in the first grade, not in the second and third grade at all. Therefore, it seems to me that, firstly, such a prescription established by the Ministry of Science and Technology will get free, and then the education of environment will be systematically given to the levels of the second and third grade.
