In this paper, design and analysis of permanent magnet synchronous generator for ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC) considering magnetically coupled turbine-rotor system is discussed. In particular, the rotor dynamics considering bearing span and journal shaft diameter is highlighted. The two topologies of permanent magnet synchronous generator with magnetic coupling are employed for comparison of computed rotor dynamics and generating characteristics. The analysis results show that the critical speed of the turbine-rotor system is higher when the rotor is coupled by magnetically coupling. Finally, the experimental results confirmed the validity of the proposed design and analysis scheme and successful development.
Vertically coupled low density InGaAs quantum dots (QDs) buried in GaAs matrix were grown with migration enhanced molecular beam epitaxy method as a candidate for quantum information processing devices. We performed excitation power-dependent photoluminescence measurements at cryogenic temperature to analyze the effects of vertical coupling according to the variation in thickness of spacer layer. The more intense coupling effects were observed with the thinner spacer layer, which modified emission properties of QDs significantly. The low surface density of QDs was observed by atomic force microscopy, and scanning transmission electron microscopy verified the successful vertical coupling between low density QDs.

Enhancement of the exchange bias and optimization of the structure have been the focus that many researchers studied, recently [1]. In this report, magnetic properties of MTJs with structure of Si/Ta (5)/Cu (10)/ Ta (5)/ Ni$\sub$80/Fe$\sub$20/ Cu (5)/ Mn$\sub$75Ir$\sub$25/ (10)/ Co$\sub$70/Fe$\sub$30/ (2.5)/ Al-O (1.5)/ Co$\sub$70/Fe$\sub$30/ (2.5)/ Ni$\sub$80/Fe$\sub$20/ (t)/ Ta (5) (t=0,10, 30, 60 and 100 nm, respectively) were investigated. The relationship between the structure and magnetic parameters of interfacial exchange coupling and interlayer coupling in as-deposited and annealed junctions was studied. The temperature dependence of exchange coupling was considered.
Blanket is of vital importance for engineering application of the fusion reactor. Nuclear heat deposition in materials is the main heat source in blanket structure. In this paper, the three-dimensional method for thermal-hydraulics/neutronics coupling analysis is developed and applied for the full-scale module of the helium-cooled ceramic breeder tritium breeding blanket (HCCB TBB) designed for China Fusion Engineering Test Reactor (CFETR). The explicit coupling scheme is used to support data transfer for coupling analysis based on cell-to-cell mapping method. The coupling algorithm is realized by the user-defined function compiled in Fluent. The three-dimensional model is established, and then the coupling analysis is performed using the paralleled Coupling Analysis of Thermal-hydraulics and Neutronics Interface Code (CATNIC). The results reveal the relatively small influence of the coupling analysis compared to the traditional method using the radial fitting function of internal heat source. However, the coupling analysis method is quite important considering the nonuniform distribution of the neutron wall loading (NWL) along the poloidal direction. Finally, the structure optimization of the blanket is carried out using the coupling method to satisfy the thermal requirement of all materials. The nonlinear effect between thermal-hydraulics and neutronics is found during the blanket structure optimization, and the tritium production performance is slightly reduced after optimization. Such an adverse effect should be thoroughly evaluated in the future work.

The aim of this study is to develop a semi-analytical method to investigate fluid-structure coupling of concentric double shells with different lengths and elastic behaviours. Co-axial shells constitute a cylindrical circular container and a baffle submerged inside the stored fluid. The container shell is made of functionally graded materials with mechanical properties changing through its thickness continuously. The baffle made of steel is fixed along its top edge and submerged inside fluid such that its lower edge freely moves. The developed approach is verified using a commercial finite element computer code. Although the model is presented for a specific case in the present work, it can be generalized to investigate coupling of shell-plate structures via fluid. It is shown that the coupling between concentric shells occurs only when they vibrate in a same circumferential mode number, n. It is also revealed that the normalized vibration amplitude of the inner shell is about the same as that of the outer shell, for narrower radial gaps. Moreover, the natural frequencies of the fluid-coupled system gradually decrease and converge to the certain values as the gradient index increases.

We have developed an efficient method to generate highly active Pd and PdO nanoparticles (NPs) dispersed on graphene and graphene oxide (GO) by an impregnation method combined with thermal treatments in $H_2$ and $O_2$ gas flows, respectively. The Pd NPs supported on graphene (Pd/G) and the PdO NPs supported on GO (PdO/GO) demonstrated excellent carbon-carbon cross-coupling reactions under a solvent-free, environmentally-friendly condition. The morphological and chemical structures of PdO/GO and Pd/G were fully characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). We found that the remarkable reactivity of the Pd/G and PdO/GO catalysts toward the cross-coupling reaction is attributed to the high degree of dispersion of the Pd and PdO NPs while the oxidative states of Pd and the oxygen functionalities of graphene oxide are not critical for their catalytic performance.
We developed a novel depth-of-interaction positron emission tomography (PET) detector using wavelength shifting (WLS) fibers and optimized it. The optimization module was designed by using two scintillators and three WLS fibers and attaching a sensor to the end of the WLS fiber. Optimum combinations were obtained through the light collection efficiency and the light collection ratio between sensors depending on coupling materials and reflectors of scintillators, WLS fibers and sensors. The highest light collection efficiency and the light collection ratio between sensors were obtained in the combination of the epoxy (coupling materials)-diffuse reflector (scintillators)-specular reflector (WLS fibers).
In this study, an adhesive tape with water and impact resistance for mobile devices was developed using a UV-curable urethane acrylate based polymer as a substrate. The substrate fabricated by UV-curable materials shows hydrophobicity and poor wettability, which significantly deteriorates the interface-adhesions between the substrate and acrylic adhesive. In order to improve the interface adhesion, 3-glycidoxy-propyl trimethoxysilane (GPTMS), a silane coupling agent having epoxy functional groups, was selected and incorporated into UV-curable urethane acrylate based polymer resins in various contents. The changes of the chemical composition according to the contents of GPTMS was studied with Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) to know the surface bonding properties. Also mechanical properties of the substrate were characterized by tensile strength, gel fraction and water contact angle measurements. The peel strengths at 180° and 90° were measured to compare the adhesion between the substrate and adhesive according to the silane coupling agent contents. The mechanical strength of the urethane acrylate adhesive tape decreased as the silane coupling agent increased, but the adhesion between the substrate and adhesives increased remarkably at an appropriate content of 0.5~1 wt%.

Conventional poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) bone cement has been widely used as an useful biopolymeric material to fix bone using artificial prostheses. However, many patients had to be reoperated, due to the poor mechanical and thermal properties of conventional PMMA bone cement, which are derived from the presence of unreacted MMA liquid, the shrinkage and bubble formation that occur during the curing process of the bone cement, and the high curing temperature ($above 100^{\circ}C$) which has to be used. In the present study, a composite PMMA bone cement was prepared by impregnating conventional PMMA bone cement with ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) powder, in order to improve its mechanical and thermal properties. The UHMWPE powder has poor adhesion with other biopolymeric materials due to the inertness of the powder surface. Therefore, the surface of the UHMWPE powder was modified with two kinds of silane coupling agent containing amino groups (3-amino propyltriethoxysilane ($TSL 8331^{R}$) and N-(2-aminoethyl)-3-(amino propyltrimethoxysilane) ($TSL 8340^{R}$)), in order to improve its bonding strength with the conventional PMMA bone cement. The tensile strengths of the composite PMMA bone cements containing $3 wt\%$ of the UHMWPE powder surface-modified with various ratios of $TSL 8331^{R}$ and $TSL 8340^{R}$ were similar or a little higher than that of the conventional PMMA bone cement. However, no significant difference in the tensile strengths between the conventional PMMA bone cement and the composite PMMA bone cements could be found. However, the curing temperatures of the composite PMMA bone cements were significantly decreased.
