The free vibration of stiffened and damaged coupled shear walls is investigated using the mixed finite element method. The anisotropic damage model is adopted to describe the damage extent of the reinforced concrete shear wall element. The internal energy of a locally damaged shear wall element is derived. Polynomial shape functions established by Kwan are used to present the component of displacements vector on each point within the wall element. The principle of virtual work is employed to deduce the stiffness matrix of a damaged shear wall element. The stiffened system is reinforced by an additional stiffening beam at some level of the structure. This induces additional axial forces, and thus reduces the bending moments in the walls and the lateral deflection, and increases the natural frequencies. The effects of the damage extent and the stiffening beam on the free vibration characteristics of the structure are studied. The optimal location of the stiffening beam for increasing as far as possible the first natural frequency of vibration is presented.
The complex variable reproducing kernel particle method (CVRKPM) and the FEM are coupled in this paper to analyze the two-dimensional potential problems. The coupled method not only conveniently imposes the essential boundary conditions, but also exploits the advantages of the individual methods while avoiding their disadvantages, resulting in improved computational efficiency. A hybrid approximation function is applied to combine the CVRKPM with the FEM. Formulations of the coupled method are presented in detail. Three numerical examples of the two-dimensional potential problems are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the new method.
Three methods of design sensitivity analysis for structures such as numerical method, analytical method and semi-analytical method have been developed for the last three decades. Although analytical design sensitivity analysis can provide very exact result, it is difficult to implement into practical design problems. Therefore, numerical method such as finite difference method is widely used to simply obtain the design sensitivity in most cases. The numerical differentiation is sufficiently accurate and reliable fur most linear problems. However, it turns out that the numerical differentiation is inefficient and inaccurate in nonlinear design sensitivity analysis because its computational cost depends on the number of design variables and large numerical errors can be included. Thus the semi-analytical method is more suitable for complicated design problems. Moreover, semi-analytical method is easy to be performed in design procedure, which can be coupled with an analysis solver such as commercial finite element package. In this paper, implementation procedure fur the semi-analytical design sensitivity analysis outside of the commercial finite element package is studied and the computational technique is proposed for evaluating the partial differentiation of internal nodal force, so called pseudo-load. Numerical examples coupled with commercial finite element package are shown to verify usefulness of proposed semi-analytical sensitivity analysis procedure and computational technique for pseudo-load.
This paper reports the development of an analysis method in a synchronous reluctance motor (SynRM) using the finite element method (FEM) coupled with the electromagnetic field of the Preisach model, which represents an additional thermal source due to hysteresis loss and a thermal field. This study focused on thermal analysis relative to hysteresis and copper losses in a SynRM.
A directly coupled Boundary Element and Finite Element Model was applied to the dynamic analysis of a coupled acoustic silencer with vibratory wall. In this cupled BEM-FEM muffler model, the BEM model was used to discretize the acoustic cavity and the FEM model was used to discretize the vibratory wall structure. Then the BEM model was coupled with the FEM model. The results of the coupled BEM-FEM model for the dynamic analysis of the simple expansion type reactive muffler configurations with flexible walls were verified by comparing the predicted results to analytical solutions. In order to investigate the effects of the muffler's structural flexibility on its transmission loss(TL) characteristics, the results of the coupled BEM-FEM model in conjunction with the four-pole parameter theory were utilized. The muffler's TL characteristics using the BEM-FEM coupled model with flexible walls as compared to other muffler configurations was studied. Finally the muffler's TL values with respect to different wall's thickness are predicted and compared.
In this study, deformation analysis for solid-liquid coupled structure has been performed using explicit finite element program In order to model the behavior of liquid, SPH (Smooth Particle Hydrodynamics) algorithm was adopted. Crash test and simulation for the hydro-type impact energy absorber were given as an example of industrial application. The obtained good correlation between the test results and simulation reveals that the proposed method could be used effectively for the structural analysis of solid-liquid coupled problems
A low-order finite element preconditioner is analyzed for a cubic spline collocation method which is used for discretizations of coupled elliptic problems derived from an optimal control problrm subject to an elliptic equation. Some numerical evidences are also provided.

Dynamic analysis of complex and large structures may be costly from a numerical point of view. For coupled vibroacoustic finite element models, the importance of reducing the size becomes obvious because the fluid degrees of freedom must be added to the structural ones. In this paper, a component mode synthesis method is proposed for large vibroacoustic interaction problems. This method couples fluid subdomains and dynamical substructuring of Craig and Bampton type. The acoustic formulation is written in terms of the velocity potential, which implies several advantages: coupled algebraic systems remain symmetric, and a potential formulation allows a direct extension of Craig and Bampton's method to acoustics. Those properties make the proposed method easy to implement in an existing finite element code because the local numerical treatment of substructures and fluid subdomains is undifferentiated. Test cases are then presented for axisymmetric geometries. Numerical results tend to prove the validity and the efficiency of the proposed method.
In this work, the iterative coupling of finite element and boundary element methods for the investigation of coupled fluid-fluid, solid-solid and fluid-solid wave propagation models is reviewed. In order to perform the coupling of the two numerical methods, a successive renewal of the variables on the common interface between the two sub-domains is performed through an iterative procedure until convergence is achieved. In the case of local nonlinearities within the finite element sub-domain, it is straightforward to perform the iterative coupling together with the iterations needed to solve the nonlinear system. In particular, a more efficient and stable performance of the coupling procedure is achieved by a special formulation that allows to use different time steps in each sub-domain. Optimized relaxation parameters are also considered in the analyses, in order to speed up and/or to ensure the convergence of the iterative process.
