The present study deals with the hydroelastic vibration analysis of structures in contact with fluid via coupled fluid-structure interaction (FSI) embedded with a finite element method (FEM) such that a structure displacement formulation is coupled with a fluid pressure-displacement formulation. For the preliminary study and validation of FEM based coupled FSI analysis, hydroelastic vibration characteristics of a rectangular plate in contact with fluid are first compared with the elastic vibration in terms of boundary condition and mode frequency. Numerical results from coupled FSI analysis have been shown to be rational and accurate, compared to energy method based theoretical solutions and experimental results. The effect of free surface on the vibration mode is numerically studied by changing the submerged depth of a rectangular plate. As a practical application, the hull structural vibration of 4,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) container ship is considered. Hydroelastic results of the ship hull structure are compared with those obtained from the elastic condition.
Wave Transmission analysis is one of methods for power transmission and reflection coefficients in coupled infinite structures. This paper focuses the wave transmission analysis of point coupled structures among semi-infinite beams and infinite thin plates considering all kinds of waves. It is supposed that the junction through the beams and plates is an identical spot and no point of contact exist except the spot. The boundary conditions are applied at the spot for continuities of 6 DOF displacements and 6 DOF force equilibriums, and then wave fields are obtained in the coupled structures. Since wave components in plate field are simplified using asymptotic expressions of Henkel functions, the displacements and forces at the plate junction can be simply expressed with magnitudes of the wave components. The wave fields according to incident waves gives the power transmission coefficients in beam/plate point coupled structures. For both coupled structures with a beam vertically and obliquely joined to a plate, power transmission analysis is performed and the analysis results are compared and examined.
In a stiffened plate reinforced on one of its sides by beam type stiffeners, the asymmetry about the plate mid-plane induces coupling between flexural wave and longitudinal wave. In this research interactions between flexural and longitudinal wave motion are analyzed in a stiffened plate which is reinforced only in one direction. The plate is modelled as a beam to which offset spring-mounted masses are attached at regular intervals. Propagation constants of the coupled waves and corresponding characteristic waves are derived by using periodic structure theory, and a computer code is developed. Also, sample calculations are carried out and the results are discussed.
Plate and shell structure is widely applied in engineering, i.e. building roofs, aircraft wings, ship platforms, and satellite solar arrays. Its vibration problem has become increasingly prominent due to the tendency of lightening, upsizing and flexibility. As a new smart material with great actuating force and toughness, macro-fiber composite (MFC) is composed of piezoelectric fiber and epoxy resin basal body, which can be directly pasted onto the surface of plate and shell and is suitable for vibration control. This paper deduces the actuation equation of MFC coupled plate in different boundary conditions, an equivalent finite element modeling method is proposed which uses MFC actuating force as the applied excitation, and on this basis the active control simulation and experiment of MFC over plate and shell structure vibration are accomplished. The results indicate that MFC is able to implement effective control over plate and shell structure vibration in multi-band range. The comparison between experiment and simulation proves that the actuation equation deduced herein, effective and practicable, can be applied into the simulation calculation of MFC vibration control over plate and shell structure.
In order to investigate the vibration characteristics of fluid-structure interaction problem, we modeled two identical rectangular plates coupled with bounded fluid. The fixed boundary condition along the plate edges and an ideal fluid were assumed. A commercial computer code, ANSYS was used to perform finite element analysis and FEM solutions were compared with the experimental results to modify the finite element model. As a result, comparison of FEM and experiment showed good agreement, and the transverse vibration modes, in-phase and out of-phase. were observed alternately in the tluid-coupled system. The effects of distance between two rectangular plates and width to length ratio on the fluid-coupled natural frequency were investigated. And it was found that the ormalized natural frequency of the fluid-coupled system monotonically increased with an increase in the number of modes.
Shear wall structures have been widely used in high-rise buildings during the past decades, mainly due to their good overall performance, large lateral stiffness, and high load-carrying capacity. However, traditional reinforced concrete wall structures are prone to brittle failure under seismic actions. In order to improve the seismic behavior of traditional shear walls, this paper presents three different metal energy-dissipation shear wall systems, including coupled shear wall with energy-dissipating steel link beams, frame with buckling-restrained steel plate shear wall structure, and coupled shear wall with buckling-restrained steel plate shear wall. Constructional details, experimental studies, and calculation analyses are also introduced in this paper.
In order to study the vibration characteristics of fluid-structure interaction problem, two rectangular plates coupled with bounded fluid were investigated. Experimental modal analyses were carried out to extract the modal parameters of the system. Additionally. finite element modal analyses performed using a commercial computer code, ANSYS. The FEM solutions were compared with the experimental solutions to verify the finite element model. As a result, the comparison between the experiment and FEM results showed excellent agreement. The transverse vibration modes, in-phase and out-of-phase, were observed alternately in the fluid-coupled system. The thickness effect of the plates on the fluid-coupled natural frequencies and mode shapes was investigated for two different cases with the identical thickness and the unequal thickness. It was found that the coupled natural frequencies increase with the thickness for the identical plates regardless of the mode phase. The experimental and the finite element analysis results showed that the out-of-phase mode shapes were deviated from the symmetrical mode shapes in the plate transverse direction fur the unequal plate thickness case.
The steady-state response for a coupled structure-acoustic-cavity systme has been investigated by numerical technique using a directly coupled finite element method(FEM) and Boundary Element Method(BEM) model. The Laplace tranformed matrix equations for the structure and the acoustic cavity are coupled directly satisfying the necessary equilibrium and compatibility conditions. The coupled FEM-BEM code is verified by comparing its prediction for an example with known analytical, numerical and experimental results. The example involves a coupled structure-acoustic-cavity system which is a box-type cavity with one end as experimentally excited pinned-pinned plate.
The moment-resistant steel frames are frequently used as a load-bearing structure of buildings. Global response of a moment-resistant frame structure strongly depends on connections behavior, which can significantly influence the response and load-bearing capacity of a steel frame structure. The analysis of a steel frame with included joints behavior is the main focus of this work. In particular, we analyze the behavior of two connection types through experimental tests, and we propose numerical beam model capable of representing connection behavior. The six experimental tests, under monotonic and cyclic loading, are performed for two different types of structural connections: end plate connection with an extended plate and end plate connection. The proposed damage-plasticity model of Reissner beam is able to capture both hardening and softening response under monotonic and cyclic loading. This model has 18 constitutive parameters, whose identification requires an elaborate procedure, which we illustrate in this work. We also present appropriate loading program and arrangement of measuring equipment, which is crucial for successful identification of constitutive parameters. Finally, throughout several practical examples, we illustrate that the steel structure connections are very important for correct prediction of the global steel frame structure response.
In order to investigate the vibration characteristics of fluid-structure interaction problem, we modeled two rectangular identical plates coupled with bounded fluid. The fixed boundary condition along the plate edges and an ideal fluid are assumed. MSC/NASTRAN was used to perform finite element analysis and analytic solutions were compared with experimental solutions to verify finite element model. As a result, comparison of FEM and experiment show good agreement, and the transverse vibration modes, in-phase and out of-phase, were observed alternately in the fluid-coupled system. The effect of distance between two rectangular plates on the fluid-coupled natural frequency is investigated.
