Flows induced by hybrid CRP pod propulsion systems (CRP-POD) are fundamentally characterized by unsteadiness. This work presents a numerical study on the unsteady flow of a CRP-POD at behind-hull condition based on CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics). Unsteady RANS method is adopted, coupled with SST k-u turbulence model and sliding mesh method. The propeller thrusts and torques obtained by CFD is validated by model tests and acceptable agreements are obtained. The time histories of shingle-blade loads and pressures near the hull surface are recorded for the analysis of unsteady flow features. The cases of forward propeller alone and aft propeller alone are also computed to distinguish the hull-propeller interaction and propeller-propeller interaction. The results show the blade loads of both forward and aft propellers strongly fluctuate with phase angles. For the forward propeller, the blade load fluctuation is mainly governed by the hull-propeller interaction, while the aft blade load is remarkably affected by the propeller-propeller interaction in terms of the load average and fluctuation pattern. The fields of pressure, vorticity and velocity are also analyzed to reveal the unsteady flow features.
The compressive behavior of special-shaped concrete filled tube (CFT) mega column coupled with multiple cavities is studied by testing six columns subjected to cyclically uniaxial compressive load. The six columns include three pentagonal specimens and three hexagonal specimens. The influence of cavity construction, arrangement of reinforcement, concrete strength on failure feature, bearing capacity, stiffness, and residual deformation is examined. Experimental results show that cavity construction and reinforcements make it possible to form a combined confinement effect to in-filled concrete, and the two groups of special-shaped CFT columns show good elastic-plastic compressive behavior. As there is no axial bearing capacity calculation method currently available in any Code of practice for special-shaped CFT columns, values predicted by normal CFT column formulas in GB50936, CECS254, ACI-318, EC4, AISCI-LRFD, CECS159, and AIJ are compared with tested values. The calculated values are lower than the tested values for most columns, thus the predicted bearing capacity is safe. A reasonable calculation method by dividing concrete into active and inactive confined regions is proposed. And high accuracy shows in estimating special-shaped CFT columns either coupled with multiple cavities or not. In addition, a finite element method (FEM) analysis is conducted and the simulated results match the test well.
The assessment of structural performance of transfer structures under potential seismic actions is presented. Various seismic assessment methodologies are used, with particular emphasis on the accurate modelling of the higher mode effects and the potential development of a soft storey effect in the mega-columns below the transfer plate (TP) level. Those methods include response spectrum analysis (RSA), manual calculation, pushover analysis (POA) and equivalent static load analysis (ESA). The capabilities and limitations of each method are highlighted. The paper aims, firstly, to determine the appropriate seismic assessment methodology for transfer structures using these different approaches, all of which can be undertaken with the resources generally available in a design office. Secondly, the paper highlights and discusses factors influencing the response behaviour of transfer structures, and finally provides a general indication of their seismic vulnerability. The representative Hong Kong building considered in this paper utilises a structural system with coupled shear walls and moment resisting portal-frames, above and below the TP, respectively. By adopting the wind load profile stipulated in the Code of Practice on Wind Effects: Hong Kong-1983, all the structural members are sized and detailed according to the British Standards BS8110 and the current local practices. The seismic displacement demand for the structure, when built on either rock or deep soil sites, was determined in a companion paper. The lateral load-displacement characteristic of the building, determined herein from manual calculation, has indicated that the poor ductility (brittle nature) of the mega-columns, due mainly to the high level of axial pre-compression as found from the analysis, cannot be effectively alleviated solely by increasing the quantity of confinement stirrups. The interstorey drift demands at lower and upper zones caused by seismic actions are found to be substantially higher than those arising from wind loads. The mega-columns supporting the TP and the coupling beams at higher zones are identified to be the most vulnerable components under seismic actions.

The article presents the vibration and acoustic responses of un-baffled doubly curved laminated composite panel structure under the excitation of a harmonic point load. The structural responses are obtained using a simulation model via ANSYS including the effect various geometries (cylindrical, elliptical, spherical and hyperboloid). Initially, the model has been established by solving adequate number of available examples to show the convergence and comparison behaviour of the natural frequencies. Further, the acoustic responses are obtained using an indirect boundary element approach for the coupled fluid-structure analysis in LMS Virtual.lab by importing the natural frequency values. Subsequently, the values for the sound power level are computed using the present numerical model and compared with that of the available published results and in-house experimentally obtained data. Further, the acoustic responses (mean-square velocity, radiation efficiency and sound power level) of the doubly curved layered structures are evaluated using the current simulation model via several numerical experimentations for different structural parameters and corresponding discussions are provided in detail.
This paper deals with frequency analysis of Euler-Bernoulli beams carrying an arbitrary number of Kelvin-Voigt viscoelastic dampers, subjected to harmonic loads. Multiple external/internal dampers occurring at the same position along the beam axis, modeling external damping devices and internal damping due to damage or imperfect connections, are considered. The challenge is to handle simultaneous discontinuities of the response, in particular bending-moment/rotation discontinuities at the location of external/internal rotational dampers, shear-force/deflection discontinuities at the location of external/internal translational dampers. Following a generalized function approach, the paper will show that exact closed-form expressions of the frequency response under point/polynomial loads can readily be derived, for any number of dampers. Also, the exact dynamic stiffness matrix and load vector of the beam will be built in a closed analytical form, to be used in a standard assemblage procedure for exact frequency response analysis of frames.

For the aeroelastic analysis of a wing with friction damping, coupled time integration method was used to obtain time responses in the subsonic and transonic regions. To take into account aerodynamic nonlinearity induced by shock wave on the lifting surface, transonic small disturbance equation with in-phase periodic boundary condition was used for unsteady aerodynamic calculation. For 2-DOF airfoil system with displace-dependent friction dampers, the effects of normal load slope and Mach number on flutter boundary were investigated.

The major object of this paper is to propose a nonlinear finite element analysis(FEA) technique of steel coupling beams-wall connections governed panel shear failure using ABAQUS. Detailed finite element models are created by studying the monotonic load response of the designed steel coupling beams-wall connections. The developed models account for the effect of material inelasticity, concrete cracking, panel shear failure and geometric nonlinearity. In order to verify the proposed FEA model, this study attended experiment considered parameters to the steel beam : face bearing plates, and horizontal ties. And the analytical result attended by the proposed FEA model validated through comparisons with the experimental results. Finally, the study estimated the analytical values compared with ASCE Design Guidelines. At this time, the analysis showed good agreement between the theoretical and experimental results.

Background and Necessity of the study : For more than 20 years, the soil engineering reserach group of Chonnam National University has been performing the deformation analysis of soft clayey foundation, since the University is located near the south-western coast of Korean Peninsulla, along which tide reclamation works have been under proaressing. Associsted with the fact mentioned above, the researchers have been developing a computer program in order to carry out deformation analysis of soft foundation since early 1980. Case-studies : In this research, the Biot's equation was selected as the governing equation coupled with several constitutive models including original and modified Cam-clay models, elasto-viscoplastic model, Lade's model etc. The anisotropy of soi1 can be considered in this program. To validate the accuracy of the computer program developed a couple of case-studies were performed. These include the pilot banking, sand drain considering smear effect and compound foundation reinforced with sheet pile into soft foundation.i) The pilot banking Good results could be acquired by assuming banking load as the body force composed of finite element mesh rather than equivalent concentrated load.ii) The sand drain Due to smear, the delay of consolidation was remarkable at the early stsge. so safety for the failure of foundation should be checked for the initial step of consolidation. iii) The compound foundation Accurate results were obtained by introducing the joint element method for the soft foundation reinforced with sheet pile into soiㅣ.
In this paper the differential transformation method (DTM) is utilized for vibration and buckling analysis of nanotubes in thermal environment while considering the coupled surface and nonlocal effects. The Eringen's nonlocal elasticity theory takes into account the effect of small size while the Gurtin-Murdoch model is used to incorporate the surface effects (SE). The derived governing differential equations are solved by DTM which demonstrated to have high precision and computational efficiency in the vibration analysis of nanobeams. The detailed mathematical derivations are presented and numerical investigations are performed while the emphasis is placed on investigating the effect of thermal loading, small scale and surface effects, mode number, thickness ratio and boundary conditions on the normalized natural frequencies and critical buckling loads of the nanobeams in detail. The results show that the surface effects lead to an increase in natural frequency and critical buckling load of nanotubes. It is explicitly shown that the vibration and buckling of a nanotube is significantly influenced by these effects and the influence of thermal loadings and nonlocal effects are minimal.

The small precision spindle motors in the high value-added products including the visible home appliances such as DLP projector require not only the energy conversion devices but also high efficiency, low vibration and sound operation. However, the spindle motors using the conventional ball bearing and sintered porous metal bearing have following problems, respectively: the vibration by the irregularity of balls and the short motor life cycle by the ball's abrasion and higher sound noises by dry contact between shaft and sleeve. In this paper, it is proposed that the spindle motor with a fluid dynamic bearing is suitable for the motor to drive the color wheel of the DLP(digital lightening processor) in the visible home appliances. The proposed spindle motor is composed of the fluid dynamic bearing with both the radial force and the thrust force. The fluid dynamic bearing is solved by the finite element analysis of the mechanical field with the Reynolds equations. The magnetic part of spindle motor, which is a type of Brushless DC Motor, is designed by the electro-magnetic field analysis coupled with the Maxwell equation. And the load capacity and the friction loss of fluid dynamic bearing are analyzed to bearing clearance variation by the fabrication error in designed motor. The design of the proposed motor is implemented by the load torque caused by the eccentricity and the unbalance of the fluid dynamic bearing when the motors are fabricated in error. The prototype of the motor with the fluid dynamic bearing is manufactured, and experiment results show the vibration, sound, and phase current at no load and color wheel load of the motors in comparison. The high performance characteristics with the low vibration, the low acoustic noise and the optimal mechanical structure are verified by the experimental results.
