A Study on the Fabrication of Variable Attenuator using a Diode (다이오드를 이용한 가변 감쇠기의 설계 및 제작에 관한 연구)

  • This paper has been fabricated the two different type of variable attenuators using a characteristics of a 3 dB directional coupler and pin diodes. One was not analyzed using the conventional even-odd modes but used simple two-port techniques. The resulting scattering parameters described operation characteristics for the general case where the terminating impedances are equal and unequal. After analyzing resistor role of the ${\pi}$ type fixed attenuator. this paper used a pin diode instead of a resistor. The variable attenuators were fabricated using pin diodes for current-controlled attenuation on the coupled ports of a 3 dB branch-line coupler and ${\pi}$ type fixed attenuator. The realized variable attenuators have more than 33 dB attenuation ranges at 2.1 GHz. and the input and output reflection coefficients are less than -13 dB. These results could be applied to mobile communication systems. It can be varied gain of the power amplifier according to change a outdoor environmental temperature and improved linearity.

  • The definition of multi-coupled operation is that coupled two trainsets is able to be operated one trainset identically. That is to say, the one driver, coupled two trainsets can operate the traction and braking system, control vehicle doors, phanto-graph, HVAC and passenger room lighting system etc, such as one trainset controlling. This study will provide high speed train design engineer with introducing multi-coupled operation system electrically and presentation automatic complex coupler mechanism, and then this paper will be applied to design next generation high speed train system such as Jun-la/Ho-nam line

  • A new analysis method of lumped-element directional coupler for CATV was proposed, where the even-and odd-mode theory for a symmetrical coupled-line directional coupler was applied to a transformer-type directional coupler. In addition, the tap-offs were analyzed by the proposed theory, which are widely used in CATV (Cable Television) systems. By comparing the calculated results for S-parameters results to the measured ones using only the even-and odd-mode reflection coefficients, the validity of the proposed analysis method was confirmed. Then, it was clearly shown that the tap-off has very wide bandwidth from 5 MHz to 4,000 MHz by adopting the proposed theory.

  • Asymmetrical parallel coupled lines are used in a number of circuits such as multi-band coupler and combline type band pass filter. Although graphical results and formulas are available for the design of coupled lines, the design procedure is hard to use, because even- and odd- mode impedances are always expressed in terms of the physical geometry. In this paper, we introduce a method to find design parameter using finite element analysis. By employing the capacitance obtained by FE analysis, design parameters for each lines are extracted. To show the validity of extracted design parameter for asymmetrical parallel coupled line, we have designed and simulated a planar type combline band pass filter.

  • The six-port direct conversion receiver front-end that is comprised of a carrier recovery and a phase shifter, which gets the same structure with six-port phase correlator using the multi-layer coupled line, was designed and fabricated in this paper. The six-port element that is comprised of the power divider and the hybrid coupler is designed by multi-layer coupled line structure. The multi-coupled structure is utilized as the basic structure in receiver phase correlator, carrier recovery circuit and phase shifter. The receiver front-end with the same multi-layer coupled line structure for the receiver elements shows the simple structure and no difficulty in integration. The fabricated multi-layer coupled six-port receiver front-end re-generates the carrier signal with a constant phase and demodulates the PSK transmission signal.

A Novel Transversal Filter using Triple-Coupled-Line Directional Couplers (삼중 결합선로 방향성결합기를 이용한 새로운 구조의 트랜스버살 필터)

  • A novel transversal filter using triple-coupled-line directional couplers is proposed. Simple design method which uses sinc function for computing coupling coefficients of the proposed transversal filter are also introduced. The frequency characteristics of the proposed filter are seldom degraded by the connecting sections between the cascaded directional couplers while those of the conventional transversal filter are aggravated. Moreover, the less number of the connecting sections and the directional couplers is required in the proposed filter than fer the case of the conventional transversal filter having the same bandwidth. The performance of the proposed transversal filter is verified by measurement and the measured results are compared with the calculated results.

  • Much time and labor has been conventionally paid for fine adjustment of circuit elements by experience to improve the characteristics of Tap-off for CATV systems. To solve the problem, in this paper, the relations between the even- and odd-mode impedance. Z$_{oe}$ and Z$_{oo}$ of symmetrical 4-port coupled-line directional coupler and power dividing characteristics of Tap-off for CATV system have been derived. After the coupling, the reflectivity and the isolation are represented by Z$_{oe}$ and Z$_{oo}$ only, the fine adjustment of all S-parameters can be performed by controling the elements of Z$_{oe}$ and Z$_{oo}$ only. Furthermore, the validity of the new fine adjustment method proposed here has been confirmed by experiments.

  • 본 논문에서는 800MHz와 1.9GHz 대역의 시스템에 적용할 수 있는 20dB 방향성 결합기를 8층 PCB 기판에 내장하여 소형화 및 저가화 할 수 있도록 설계하였다. 방향성 결합기는 4층과 6층에 coupled line으로 적층함으로써, 다층 PCB기판을 최대한 활용하여 공간을 최소화하였다. 또한, 고유전율을 가진 필름을 이용하여, coupled line의 끝에 내장형 고용량 커패시터를 연결하여 설계하였다. 6 $\times$ 6 $\times$ 0.7 (height)$mm^3$ 크기로 설계된 방향성 800MHz 결합기의 경우 -20dB의 coupling 특성, -0.6dB의 transmission 특성, -25dB의 isolation 특성을 나타내었다. 패키징 기판에 내장된 방향성 결합기는 단말기 및 통신시스템의 소형화에 크게 기여할 수 있을 것이다.

  • By defining a power distribution ratio (PDR) and coupling efficiency (CE) amenable to the rigorous analytical solutions of newly developed rigorous modal transmission-line theory (MTLT), we explicitly analyze the power coupling characteristics of TE modes propagating in GADCs. The numerical results reveal that the incident power is optimally coupled into the desired guiding channel if the powers of rigorous modes excited at the input boundary of grating-assisted coupler are equally partitioned.

Analysis of Electrostatic Field and Potential Distributions in Conductor-Backed Coupled Coplanar Waveguide Using Conformal Mapping Method (등각사상방법을 이용한 도체로 보강된 결합 도파 선로의 정전기장과 전위 분포 해석)

  • We use conformal mapping method to derive the analytical expressions for calculating electrostatic fields and electric potentials surrounding the conductor-backed coupled coplanar waveguide(CBCCPW) structure. Using the derived expressions, the electrostatic fields and potentials are computed at various points of the CBCCPW's geometry and the field and potential distributions are analyzed. The proposed method provides a faster and simpler calculation of the field distributions than the full-wave analysis method because no iterations are required. This method can be widely applied to the analysis of microwave integrated circuits using coupled line, such as coupler, filter, and microstrip antenna.
