We selected 100% cotton fabric, 100% Hanji yarn fabric and two kinds of cotton / Hanji yarn blended fabrics and fused them with three kinds of interlinings in order to examine changes to the physical properties and the post-adhesion physical properties of Hanji yarn blended fabrics. Changes in KES values were examined after fusing. First, EM, B, 2HB, MMD values of Hanji yarn blended fabrics were higher than cotton fabric, and LT, RT, G, 2HG, LC, WC values of cotton fabric were higher than Hanji yarn blended fabrics. Tensile recovery was lowered, bending stiffness was increased, and shear stiffness was lowered when Hanji yarn was mixed. Second, the KES value of LT, B, 2HB, G, 2HG, LC, WC increased after fusing, while the EM, MMD values decreased. SMD was shown to decrease or increase depending on the type of fabric. The adhesive effect on bending stiffness and shear stiffness due to the mixing of Hanji shows a different tendency in the comparison of αB and αG.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of hydrophilic finish for polyester (PET) fabric and hydrophobic finish for cotton fabric on the water transport and comfort properties. Polyester fabric was treated with 10% sodium hydroxide solution to impart hydrophilicity. Cotton fabric was sprayed with Scotch-gard$^{(R)}$ water and oil repellent finish to impart hydrophobicity. Porosity, air permeability, contact angle, wickability and water vapor transport rate (WVTR) were measured to determine the water transport properties of fabrics. To compare the comfort properties of treated and untreated fabrics, wear test was performed by putting fabric patches on the upper back: stratum corneum water content (SCWC), subjective wettedness and comfort rating were determined. The results were as follows: (1) The contact angle of water on treated polyester fabric was decreased and that of treated cotton fabric was increased. Also, the wickability of treated polyester fabric was increased and the wickability of cotton fabric was decreased. (2) Although each finish did not change porosity, the water vapor transport rate of treated polyester fabric was increased and that of treated cotton fabric was decreased slightly. (3) The results of stratum corneum water content measurements showed good agreement with the results of the contact angle and the wickability, i.e., the better the liquid water transport properties are, the less the stratum corneum water contents were resulted. (4) The realtionship of subjective wettedness or comfort and stratum corneum water content was independent. Therefore, it was concluded that human perception on the subjective wettedness or the comfort is affected by the skin contact of wet fabric rather than by the stratum corneum water content.
Cotton has no adsorption ability for the cationic dye and heavy metal but, if anionized cotton can be made, it will be possible. In this study, to enable the anionisation of cotton fabric, it was modified using sodium vinylsolfonate(SV) as the anionisation reagent, employing a pad-dry-cure(PDC) technique. The effects of curing time, treatment concentrations of urea, sodium hydroxide and SV on the weight increase were experimented and then, the physical characterizations of sulfoethyl cotton(SEC) depending on the finishing conditions were estimated, thus the application possibility of SV as anionisation reagent was investigated. It was not much changed by anionisation except wrinkle recovery. And the structure of SEC was elucidated by Raman and NMR spectoscopy. The feasibility of using Raman and NMR spectroscopy with the band at $1,043cm^{-1}$, and 50.5ppm, respectively as marker band to determine sulfoethyl group of SEC was reported. The total degree of SV substitution(DSV) was determined via elemental analysis. SEC with diverse total DSV up to 0.066 was obtained. In the thermal decomposition(pyrolysis) by DSC, it can be found that the pyrolysis temperature was about $30^{\circ}C$ lower than that of non-treated cotton fabric.
Effect of fixation methods and relaxation treatment on the flame retardant(FR) and physical properties of MDPP/HMM treated cotton weft-knitted fabrics were studied. Combination of four different fixation methods - relaxation, swelling agent treatment, pad dry cure fixation, and wet fixation - were applied to flame retardant finish of cotton weft-knitted fabric with MDPP/HMM. As the results, 1. Swelling agent and wet fixation method helps FR agent penetrate the fiber efficiently. Interlock showed relatively higher values of LOI than single jersey. 2. Interlock showed relatively higher values of bending rigidity(B), shear rigidity(G) and coefficient of friction(MIU) than those of single jersey before and after flame resistant treatment. 3. An increase in internal volume of cotton fiber by relaxation treatment increased the bending rigidity(B), shear rigidity(G) and compressional energy(WC). 4. The cotton weft-knitted fabric treated wet fixation, which crossliked FR agent efficiently, showed higher bending rigidity, shear rigidity(G) and lower compressional energy(WC). Retention of swelling ability of cotton weft-knitted fabrics treated with MDPP/HMM, which increased the internal volume of cotton weft-knitted fabric, showed lower bending rigidity.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of laundry variables and additives on the removal of deposited calcium on the cotton fabric. Samples of calcium deposited fabric was made by treating fabric with $CaC1_2$ and $Na_2CO_3$ solution subsequently. The experimental variables were: 1) NaOH concentration ($0.0001\%$, $0.0005\%$, $0.001\%$, $0.005\%$, $0.01\%$) 2) Alkaline builders(sodium carbonate, sodium meta silicate) 3) Sequestering agents(STPP and EDTA concentration: $0.02\%$, $0.04\%$, $0.06\%$, $0.08\%$, $0.1\%$, $0.15\%$, $0.2\%$) 4) Temperatures($25\pm1^{\circ}C$, $40\pm1^{\circ}C$, $60\pm1^{\circ}C$) 5) Edge-abrasion to the removal of deposited calcium on the cotton fabric. The fabric was washed for 15 minutes in a washing machine(Model: Gold Star WP-3007) or Launder-0-meter(40$\~$45 r.p.m., Toyo Rika Instrument Inc.) and rinsed 3 times per every rinsing time. The amount of calcium deposits on the fabrics was determined by EDTA-back titration methods and edge-abrasion was evaluated by ASTM D 3886 method. The results of this study were as follows: 1) pH of surfactant solution(NaOH concentration) did not influence on the removal of deposited calcium on the cotton fabric. 2) Added alkaline builders did not influence on the removal of deposited calcium on the cotton fabric. 3) It was shown that STPP and EDTA were effective to remove deposited calcium. The removal of deposited calcium on the cotton fabric was proportionally increased with increasing concentration of STPP and EDTA. At high concentration, however, the rate was rather decreased with increasing concentration. 4) The temperature of washing solution did not influence on the removal of dedosited calcium on the cotton fabric. 5) As the removal of deposited calcium on the cotton fabric was increased, the rate of edge-abrasion of the fabric was gradually increased.

Dyeing properties of the colorants from gromwell on cotton fabric were investigated. The effects of dyeing conditions on dye uptake and the effects of mordants and mordanting methods on K/S value, color change and colorfastness were explored. Gromwell colorants showed low affinity to cotton fabric, and its adsorption isotherm was Freundlich type close to Langmuir type. Therefore, it was considered that hydrogen bonding and Vander Waals force were involved in the adsorption of gromwell colorants to cotton fabric. Pre-mordanting method except Sn mordant gave higher K/S value but it was not significant. Gromwell colorants produced mainly R and RP color on cotton fabric depending on mordants and mordanting method. Dyed cotton fabric showed generally high colorfastness irrespective of mordanting treatment. Light colorfastness was increased by repeat dyeing and Fe and Sn mordanting.
Pursuing the fabric materials for military chemical warfare protective clothing with the improved detoxification properties, this study investigated the simple and effective cotton treatment method using pad-dry-cure process and 3-aminopropyltrimethox ysilane(APTMS) solution for surface amination. Detoxification properties of the untreated and treated cotton fabrics were evaluated via decontamination of chemical warfare agent simulant, DFP(diisopropylfluorophosphate). The surface aminated cotton fabric increased the rate of the hydrolysis of DFP by the factor of 3 and the decontamination ratio reached 88.2% after 24h. Therefore, the surface amination of the cotton fabric with APTMS can be an effective pathway to prepare the material for protective clothing against chemical warfare agents.
For the purpose of application to new natural dyestuff, the dyeability of Purple onion shell extract was analyzed. It was dyed in cotton fabric according to various dye weight, dyeing temperature, dyeing time. And the effects of mordanting conditions were examined as color differences and color fastnesses. The dyeaffinities were increased as were increased dye weight, especially 100% owf. The optimum dyeing condition of Purple onion shell extract was 40minutes at $60^{\circ}C$. The dyeaffinity was increased at pre-mordanted condition, and color difference was increased distinctly at post mordanted condition. The hue of all mordanted cotton fabrics changed into Yellow where as non mordanted cotton fabric was Red. The color fastnesses of mordanted cotton fabrics were generally not so god, but light fastness was improved in post-Cu mordanted fabric.
The primary and secondary alcohols in cellulose reacted with acrylonitrile(AN) in the presence of strong alkalis to form cyanoethylated cellulose. The partially cyanoethylated cotton(CEC) fabric with AN in the presence of aqueous sodium hydroxide solution was described, including effects of treatment time and reagent concentrations. The weight increases of cotton fabric were shown to be linearly related to the treatment time, temperature and concentration of sodium hydroxide. The physical properties such as shrinkage ratio and tensile strength were proportional to the weight increases without significant impact on elongation. But the moisture regain decreased with decreasing hydrophilicity. The degree of substitution(DS) and transfer ratio were linearly related to the weight increases. In the CEC with increasing weight up to 24.9%, it has been obtained with DS up to 0.63-0.67 cyanoethyl groups per anhydroglucose and transferring ratio up to 87.7%. The color fastness to washing by sublimation transfer printing was improved by the cyanoethylation.
Cotton fabric md nylon fabric were chosen as base fabric specimens for dyeing using Japanese pagoda tree colorants through chitosan, treatment. With the chitosan treatment, the dye-uptake of the treated fabric increased. This treatment is also expected to be effective in terms of environment-friendliness. The effect of the dyeing methods, mordanting or non-mordanting, and chitosan treatment on the dye-uptake and air permeability of the treated fabrics was investigated. In case of cotton fabric, Al mordanted dyeing resulted in higher dye-uptake through the chitosan treatment. Therefore, the chitosan treatment is effective in this case. Japanese pagoda tree seems to have direct affinity for nylon fabric without the mordanting treatment. In case of cotton fabric, it seems that the cellulose molecules, colorants, and the chitosan make a complex, thereby reducing the air permeability. In case of nylon fabric, due to the fact the Japanese pagoda tree colorant molecules form direct physical bonding with the nylon molecules, it seems that there is not much of air permeability reduction.
