Nanoemulsions have been widely investigated for many years because of their attractive and unique characteristics. Nanoemulsions are composed of oil, surfactant, co-surfactant and water. Especially, cosurfactant plays a critical role in formation of nanoemulsions. In pharmaceutical area, a pre-concentrate form of nanoemulsions which is known as self-nanoemulsifying drug delivery systems (SNEDDS) was available for some water-insoluble drugs. In this study, we investigated the functional behaviors of cosurfactant in design of SNEDDS and nanoemulsions. Cremophor RH 40$^{(R)}$, Propylene carbonate and medium chain triglyceride were selected for surfactant, cosurfactant and oil, respectively. Cyclosporine was employed as a drug. Phase diagrams showed the area of isotropic o/w region which forms o/w nanoemulsions was not significantly affected by the compositional ratio of cosurfactant. But, drug solubilization capacity, droplet size of nanoemulsions and drug release rate were greatly affected by the cosurfactant.

This study was investigated optimal conditions which were necessary to prepare emulsion of four component systems by the Microfluidizer. Squalane, isopropyl myristate, PPG-15 stearyl benzoate ester were used as an oil and POE(20) sorbitan monolaurate, POE(20) sorbitan monopalmitate, POE(20) sorbitan monostearate, glycerine were selected as a cosurfactant and surfactant. The emulsion was affected by the operating pressure, the recycle frequency and oil, surfactant, cosurfactant phase. The operating pressure and recycle frequency increased, the droplet diameter of emulsion decreased and was constant later. In this study, the optimal pressure and recycle frequency were 1400 bar, 4 cycles. The droplet size was the smallest when the concentration of glycerine was 30 wt.%. As the oil phase is increased, the size is increased.
Poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) nanoparticles were synthesized in oil/water miniemulsion polymerization in the presence of low amount of hexadecane as a cosurfactant. The nanoparticles were tested to apply as a drug carrier. The shape of nanoparticles was observed by scanning electron microscopy, and the average particle size and size distribution were examined by particle size analyzer. Inclusion of antibiotic drugs into the nanoparticles was confirmed by CHO, C=O, and OH peak of FT-IR. Size of the nanoparticles were adjusted between 80∼300 nm by changing the homogenization rate and amount of cosurfactant and surfactant. The monomer droplets prepared by miniemulsion method using a cosurfactant were homogeneous and stable compared with those prepared by conventional emulsion polymerization. This might be occurred due to the prevention of Ostwald ripening and coalescence between droplets by using hexadecane as a cosurfactant.
In this study, the effects of additives such as ionic surfactant and cosurfactant were studied on the solubilization of sulfur compounds contained in the crude oil by Tergitol series nonionic surfactants. It was found that the addition of an ionic surfactant such as sodium oleate, potassium oleate, CTAB and DTAB did not enhance solubilization capacity of Tergitol series nonionic surfactant. On the other hand, the addition of a long-chain alcohol as a cosurfactant increased the solubilization of sulfur compounds in the crude oil. The effect of alcohol was found to become reduced with an increase in the amount of crude oil used mainly due to partitioning phenomena of an nonionic surfactant. The enhancement of solubilizing capacity of Tergitol series nonionic surfactant with addition of a cosurfactant was associated with a decrease in interfacial tension between crude oil and surfactant solution. The pH of Tergitol nonionic surfactant solution did not affect the solubilization of sulfur compounds. Finally, it was found that the growth of sulfur reducing microoganisms was not greatly affected by both addition of nonionic surfactant and cosurfactant.

It was investigated that the effects of surfactant to cosurfactant ratio on the stability and rheological properties of o/w microemulsion. The stability of microemulsion was good in the surfactant to cosurfactant ratio 20/40 - 30/30. In the point of rheological properties, a yield stress meande the inner structure formation was detected and the area of hysteresis loop was increased with increasing of surfactant content of the ratio. The microemulsion prepared by the Microfluidizer was characterized by rheopetic.
Ibuprofen (IBU), is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, used to treat rheumatoid arthritis, removal of fever and mild to moderate pain. Because of small dosage and very low accumulation in the body, IBU has been used to heal children's fever. However, IBU was very low solubility in a low pH and water (in water $0.03{\sim}2.5$ mg/ml). A nanoemulsion containing IBU by means of self-microemulsion drug delver system (SMEDDS) was prepared in order to enhance the solubility of IBU. The SMEDDS was composed of cosurfactant, oil and surfactant The solubility of IBU in various components such as cosurfactant, oil and surfactant was examined. $Carbitol^{\circledR}\;(386.99{\pm}20.5\;mg/ml)$ as a cosurfactant, $Labrafil^{\circledR}$ M1944CS $(90.16{\pm}1.60mg/ml)$ as an oil and $Cremopher^{\circledR}$ RH-40 $(239.01{\pm}2.8\;mg/ml)$ as a surfactant were used in this study for preparing SMEDDS. Optimized formulation of SMEDDS was obtained by phase diagram which express the section of nanoemulsion formation. The SMEDDS containing IBU had higher dissolution rate than conventional IBU sirups. Thus the SMEDDS was a potential candidate of stable conventional and effective oral dosage form for IBU.
Titanium hydroxide (TiO({{{{ {OH }_{2 } }})) fine particles were produced by the reverse micelle technique. For the formation of titanium hydroxide (TiO({{{{ {OH }_{2 } }})) particles with the technique reversed micellar solution was prepared by solubilizing water into organic solvent (isooctane) with a surfactant and titanium alkoxide (tetraisopropyl orthotitanate) diluted with isopropyl alcohol was added to the reversed micellar solution. The hdrolyzed species (TiO({{{{ {OH }_{2 } }})) was formed by the hydrolysis of titanium alkoxide and titanium dioxide is then formed by the condensation of the hydrolyzed species. There are several process variables such as surfactants concentration of surface cosurfactant hydrolysis temperature and pH. In this work the ef-fects of process variables on paticle shapes particle size distribution and paticle agglomeration were bi-nodal for an anionic surfactant(AOT) in the whole range of temperature pH and surfactant concentration of this experiment. The addition of ethanol as a cosurfactant resulted in narrow particle size distribution of the experiment. The additiono of ethanol as a cosurfactant resulted in narrow particle size distribution and 0.12${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ of smaller average particle diameter. FT-IR spectrum of particles shows the absorption peak of Ti-OH bonding and Ti-O bonding. An exothermic peak around 41$0^{\circ}C$ in TGA-DTA curve shows that crys- tallized anatase phase appears and completely transits to anatase around 45$0^{\circ}C$.
It has been found that the addition of cosurfactant is necessary in order to expand three phase region containing middle phase microemulsion in ternary systems containing alkyl ethoxylate (AEO) nonionic surfactant, commercial lubricant and water. Phase behavior in the surfactant systems with addition of cosurfactant over a temperature range of 30 to $60^{\circ}C$ showed different trends depending on surfactant, temperature and chain length of alcohol added. For the $C_{12}E_4$ system, addition of n-pentanol and n-hexanol both produced a three phase region over a wide range of temperatures but the middle-phase formed was found to be a $L_3$ or D' phase which would not facilitate solubilization of high molecular weight lubricants. On the other hand, for the $C_{12}E_5$ system, the middle-phase microemulsion was found to be formed with addition of a rather long-chain alcohol such as n-hexanol, n-heptanol, n-octanol, or n-nonanol. The results shown with the addition of cosurfactant was understood in connection with interfacial tension measurements and composition analysis. The inability of the hydrocarbon region of the surfactant films to incorporate the large lubricant molecules and high solubility of a hydrophobic surfactant are thought to be the chief reasons for poor solubilization with D' phase.
A transdermal preparation containing diclofenac diethylammonium (DDA) was developed using an O/W microemulsion system. Of the oils tested, lauryl alcohol was chosen as the oil phase of the microemulsion, as it showed a good solubilizing capacity and excellent skin permeation rate of the drug. Pseudoternary phase diagrams were constructed to obtain the concentration range of oil, surfactant and cosurfactant for microemulsion formation, and the effect of these additives on skin permeation of DDA was evaluated with excised rat skins. The optimum formulation of the microemulsion consisted of 1.16% of DDA, 5% of lauryl alcohol, 60% of water in combination with the 34.54% of Labrasol (surfactant)/ethanol (cosurfactant) (1:2). The efficiency of formulation in the percutaneous absorption of DDA was dependent upon the contents of water and lauryl alcohol as well as Labrasol: ethanol mixing ratio. It was concluded that the percutaneous absorption of DDA from microemulsions was enhanced with increasing the lauryl alcohol and water contents, and with decreasing the Labrasol:ethanol mixing ratio in the formulation.

This study was investigated to search for the effects of the structure of each component in four-component O/W microemulsion system on its formation region, droplet size and stablilty. The results was that the more number of OH site, the shorter carbon chain length of polyol, the larger formation region of microemulsion was showed. The small microemulsion droplet was obtained on condition that the polatry of oil was large and carbon chain length of hydrophobic group of surfactant was long. In using satrated hydrocarbon (such as liquid paraffin, squalane) as dispersed phase, the stability of microemulsion was better than aromatic oil phase.
