This study investigated the tri-metallic galvanic coupling of different metals in the tubes, fillers, and fins of a heat exchanger. The goal was to prevent corrosion of the tubes using the fin as a sacrificial anode while ensuring that the filler metal has a more noble potential than the fin, to avoid detachment. The metals were arranged in descending order of corrosion potential, with the noblest potential assigned to the tube, followed by the filler metal and the fin. To address a reduction in protection current of the fin, the filler metal was modified by adding Zn to decrease its corrosion potential. However, increasing the Zn content of filler metal also increases its corrosion current. The study examined three different filler metals, considering their corrosion potential, and kinetics. The results suggest that a filler metal with 1.5 wt.% Zn addition is optimal for providing cathodic protection to the tube while reducing the reaction rate of the sacrificial anode.
Recently, massive concrete structures exposed to salt from ocean marine environments, or from winter deicing. The corrosion caused by chloride-penetration may affect severey the durability and service life of such a concretestructures. Thus, it is necessary to develop durable concrete to enhance the corrosion resistance. In this study, we investigate the usage of adequate corrosion-protection materials in order to reduce permability-coefficient of concrete and method of enhancing the durability of concrete structures using by penetrating corrosion-protection materials.

Safety operation of main pipelines is primarily provided by anticorrosive monitoring. Anticorrosive monitoring of oil pipeline transportation objects is based on results of complex corrosion inspections, analysis of basic data including design data, definition of a corrosion residual rate and diagnostic of general equipment's technical condition. All the abovementioned arrangements are regulated by normative documents. For diagnostics of corrosion-technical condition of oil pipeline transportation objects one presently uses different methods such as in-line inspection using devices with ultrasonic, magnetic or another detector, acoustic-emission diagnostics, electrometric survey, general external corrosion diagnostics and cameral processing of obtained data. Results of a complex of diagnostics give a possibility: $\cdot$ to arrange a pipeline's sectors according to a degree of corrosion danger; $\cdot$ to check up true condition of pipeline's metal; $\cdot$ to estimate technical condition and working ability of a system of anticorrosive protection. However such a control of corrosion technical condition of a main pipeline creates the appearance of estimation of a true degree of protection of an object if values of protective potential with resistive component are taken into consideration only. So in addition to corrosive technical diagnostics one must define a true residual corrosion rate taking into account protective action of electrochemical protection and true protection of a pipeline one must at times. Realized anticorrosive monitoring enables to take a reasonable decision about further operation of objects according to objects' residual life, variation of operation parameters, repair and dismantlement of objects.
Inorganic ion exchange compounds (IECs) including hydrotalcites and bentonite clays are a well known classes of layered mixed metal hydroxides or silicates that demonstrate ion exchange properties. These compounds have a range of applications from water purification to catalyst supports. The use of synthetic versions of these compounds as environmentally friendly additives to paints for storage and release of inhibitors is a new and emerging application. In this paper, the general concept of storage and release of inhibiting ions from IEC-based particulate pigments added to organic coatings is presented. The unique aspects of the IEC structure and the ion exchange phenomenon that form the basis of the storage and release characteristic are illustrated in two examples comprising an anion exchanging hydrotalcite compound and a cation exchanging bentonite compound. Examples of the levels of corrosion protection imparted by use of these types of pigments in organic coatings applied to aluminum alloy substrates is shown. How corrosion inhibition translates to corrosion protection during accelerated exposure testing by organic coatings containing these compounds is also presented.
The sol-gel methodology has been applied successfully in the synthesis of a novel hybrid coating based on dimethoxymethyl-n-octadecylsilane precursor. The newly synthesized parent coating was functionalized further with two commercially-available corrosion-inhibitive pigments Moly-$white^{(R)}$ 101-ED and Hfucophos $Zapp^{(R)}$, applied to mild steel panels, and immersed continuously in 3.5% NaCl electrolytic solution for 288 h. The corrosion protection performance of the prepared functional coatings was evaluated using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and DC polarization techniques. An enhancement in the barrier properties has been revealed from the electrochemical characterization data of the hybrid films, in comparison with untreated mild steel substrates following long-term immersion in 3.5% NaCl. The corrosion resistance properties of the newly developed coatings over mild steel substrates found to be largely dependent on the type of the loaded inhibitive pigment in which the Moly-white inhibitor has a positive impact on the corrosion protection performance of the parent coating, while an opposite behavior was observed upon mixing the base polymeric matrix with the commercially-available Zapp corrosion inhibitor.
To solve the corrosion problem of industrial equipment and other constructions containing metals, corrosion protection can be performed by using coating which provides a barrier between the metal and its environment. Coatings play a significant role in protecting irons and steels in harsh marine and acid environments. This study was conducted to identify an anti-corrosive epoxy coating for carbon steel composite with 0.1, 0.3, and 0.5 wt% concentrations of nanoparticles of SiO2 using the dip-coating method. The electrochemical behavior was analyzed with open circuit potential (OCP) technics and polarization curves (Tafle) in 3.5 wt% NaCl and 5 vol% H2SO4 media. The structure, composition, and morphology were characterized using different analytical techniques such as X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared spectrum (FT-IR), and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). Results revealed that epoxynano SiO2 coating demonstrated a lower corrosion rate of 2.51 × 10-4 mm/year and the efficiency of corrosion protection was as high as 99.77%. The electrochemical measurement showed that the nano-SiO2 / epoxy coating enhanced the anti-corrosive performance in both NaCl and H2SO4 media.
Cathodic protection(CP) is widely used as a means of protecting corrosion for not only marine structures like ship hulls and offshore drilling facilities, but also underground structures like buried pipelines and oil storage tanks. The principle of CP is that the anodic dissolution of metal can be protected by supplying electrons to the cathode metal. When unprotected structures are nearby to CP systems, interference problems between unprotected and protected structures may be happened. The stray current interference can accelerate the corrosion of nearby structures. So far many efforts have been made to reduce the interference in the electric railway systems adjacent to the underground metal structures like buried pipelines and gas/oil tanks. During recent few decades the protection technologies against stray current induced corrosion have been significantly improved and a number of techniques have been developed. However, there is very limited information an marine environments. Some complex harbor structures are protected by two cathodic protection systems, i.e. sacrificial anode cathodic protection(SACP) and impressed current cathodic protection(ICCP). In this case, when the protection current from sacrificial anodes returns to the cathode through electrolyte, it passes through nearby other low resistance metal structures. In many cases the stray current of ICCP systems influences the function of SACP. In this study, the risk of stray current from the SACP system to adjacent reinforced concrete structures has been verified through laboratory experiments. Concrete and steel pile structures modeled a part of bridge have been investigated in terms of CP potential and current between the two. The variation of stray current according to the magnitude of ICCP/SACP has been studied to mitigate it and to suggest the proper protection criteria.
Prevention of crevice corrosion was studied for STS 304 stainless steel using a Mg-alloy galvanic anode in solutions with various specific resistivity. The crevice corrosion and corrosion protection characteristics of the steel was investigated by the electrochemical polarization and galvanic corrosion tests. Experimental results show that the crevice corrosion of STS 304 stainless steel does not occur in solutions of high specific resistivity, but it occurs in solutions of low specific resistivity like in solutions with resistivities of 30, 60 and $115{\Omega}{\cdot}m$. With decreasing specific resistivity of the solution, the electrode potential of STS 304 stainless steel in the crevice is lowered. The potential of STS 304 stainless steel in the crevice after coupling is cathodically polarized more by decreasing specific resistivity indicating that the crevice corrosion of STS 304 stainless steel is prevented by the Mg-alloy galvanic anode.
Corrosion is never avoided in the use of materials with various environments. The underwater hull is normally protected against rusting by several coatings of anti-corrosive paint. The purpose of ICCP(Impressed Current Cathodic protection) system is to eliminate the rusting or corrosion, which occurs on metal immersed in seawater. The anode of ICCP system is controlled by an external DC source with converter. The function of anode is to conduct the protective current into seawater. The proposed algorithm includes the harmonic suppression control strategy and the optimum protection strategy and has tried to test the requirement current density for protection, the influence of voltage, the protection potential. This paper was studied the variation of potential and current density with environment factors, time and velocity, and the experimental results will be explained.
Fossil fired power plant produces the electric energy by using a thermal energy by the combustion of fossil fuels as like oil, gas and coal. The exhausted flue gas by the combustion of oil etc. contains usually many contaminated species, and especially sulfur-content has been controlled strictly and then FGD (Flue Gas Desulfurization) facility should be installed in every fossil fired power plant. To minimize the content of contaminations in final exhaust gas, high corrosive environment including sulfuric acid (it was formed during the process which $SO_2$ gas combined with $Mg(OH)_2$ solution) can be formed in cooling zone of FGD facility and severe corrosion damage is reported in this zone. These conditions are formed when duct materials are immersed in fluid that flows on the duct floors or when exhausted gas is condensed into thin layered medium and contacts with materials of the duct walls and roofs. These environments make troublesome corrosion and air pollution problems that are occurred from the leakage of those ducts. The frequent shut down and repairing works of the FGD systems also demand costs and low efficiencies of those facilities. In general, high corrosion resistant materials have been used to solve this problem. However, corrosion problems have severely occurred in a cooling zone even though high corrosion resistant materials were used. In this work, a new technology has been proposed to solve the corrosion problem in the cooling zone of FGD facility. This electrochemical protection system contains cathodic protection method and protection by coating film, and remote monitoring-control system.
