  • Corrosion of the rebar embedded in concrete has a fundamental role in the determination of life and durability of the concrete structures. Researches have demonstrated that artificial neural networks (ANNs) can effectively predict issues such as expected damage in concrete structures in marine environment caused by chloride penetration, the potential of steel embedded in concrete under the influence of chloride, the corrosion of the steel embedded in concrete and corrosion current density in steel reinforced concrete. In this study, data from different kind of concrete under the influence of chloride ion, are analyzed using the neural network and it is concluded that this method is able to predict the bond strength between the concrete and the steel reinforcement in mentioned condition with high reliability.

  • The catenary wires are damaged by periodic running of train as well as repeated stress. The wires are also degraded by atmosphere corrosion at fields. Corrosion of wires increased surface roughness and deteriorated mechanical properties by providing fatigue crack initiation sited resulting in a bad effect on service life of the wires. Fatigue test of catenary wires performed to estimate service lifetime. Also, simulation to analyze stress on catenary wires was conducted through modelling the finite elements for dynamic behaviors of wires. Fatigue life of catenary wires was estimated with fatigue and simulation tests.

  • Chloride ingress is a common cause of deterioration of reinforced concrete structures. Modeling the chloride ingress is an important basis for designing reinforced concrete structures and for assessing the reliability of an existing structure. The modelling is also needed for predicting the deterioration of a reinforced structure. This paper presents an approach for the probabilistic modeling of the chloride-induced corrosion of reinforcement steel in concrete structures that takes into account the uncertainties in the physical models. The parameters of the models are modeled as random variables and the distribution of the corrosion time and probability of corrosion are determined by using Monte Carlo simulation. The predictions of the proposed model is very effective to do the decision-making about initiation time and deterioration degree.

  • This paper presents a study on the effects of localized steel-concrete bond degradation on the flexural behaviour of RC beams. A finite element analysis is undertaken to complete the experimental analysis. The first part deals with an experimental study on beams where bond was removed by using plastic tube at different locations and for various lengths. The flexural behaviour was studied at global scale (load-deflection) and local scale (moment-curvature). The second part, a numerical study using a simplified special finite element (rust element) modelling the rust layer occurring between reinforcement and concrete with corrosion was conducted in order to find the relation between the degree of corrosion and the degradation of the steel-concrete bond. The computed value of the corrosion degree corresponding to the total degradation of bond has been used in a second time to model the tests, in order to evaluate the influence of the loss of bond, the steel cross section reduction, and the combination of both. The results enable to evaluate the influence of the different corrosion effects on the flexural behaviour, according to the length and the location of the corroded zone.

  • The search for new corrosion inhibitors for different corrosive mediums is a never-ending task. In the present work, the corrosion inhibition behavior and adsorption mechanism of two novel synthetic thiazolidinedione derivatives noted MTZD and ATZD in 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution on copper were investigated. Electrochemical, scanning electron microscope (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM) techniques were used along with first-principles DFT calculations. At maximum inhibitor concentration i.e., 300 ppm corrosion inhibition efficiency reached maximum up to 90% and 96% for MTZD and ATZD, respectively, and thereby followed the order of ATZD > MTZD. The inhibition efficiency increased up to 24 h of immersion, and then decreased after 48h immersion. The potentiodynamic curves suggested that the inhibition action of tested compounds is a mixed type of inhibitor. The first-principles DFT calculations suggested that compounds under investigation formed covalent bonds with Cu(111) surface via reactive sites. SEM and AFM results confirmed the formation of protective barrier that prevent corrosion attack.

  • Recently, to utilize conutry effectively, many concrete structures such as Young Jong Do New Airport. SeoHae Bridege are being constructed. Therefore, Corrosion of steel reinforcement of concrete structures become more and more serious, and prediction of service lives of concrete structures considering steel corrosion is needed much more. The methodologies of predicting service life have been studied for various views, but mathematical modelling based on diffusion theory is generally applied. The purpose of this paper is to investigate current mathematical models, and suggest theoretical basis on estimation of service lives of concrete structures in marine environment. Thus, the procedures for selecting variables such as threshold chloride concentration, diffusion coefficient, etc are suggested, and the service lives calculated through these procedures for various diffusion coefficients and cover depths are presented.

  • This paper uses modelling and experiment to perform a quantitative analysis for the gypsum and ettringite formations in cement pastes subjected to sulfate attack. Firstly, based on Fick's law and chemical reaction kinetics, a diffusion model of sulfate ions in cement pastes is proposed, and then the model of the gypsum and ettringite formations is established to analyze its contents in cement pastes with corrosion time. Secondly, the corrosion experiment of the specimens with cement pastes immersed into 2.5%, 5.0% and 10.0% $Na_2SO_4$ solutions are carried out, and by using XRD-Rietveld method, the phases of powder samples from the specimens are quantitatively analyzed to obtain the contents of gypsum and ettringite in different surface depth, solution concentration and corrosion time. Finally, the contents of gypsum and ettringite calculated by the models are compared with the results from the XRD experiments, and then the effects of surface depth, corrosion time and solution concentration on the gypsum and ettringite formations in cement pastes are discussed.

  • The attack of environmental aggressive agents progressively reduces the structural reliability of buildings and infrastructures and, in the worst exposition conditions, may even lead to their collapse in the long period. A change in the material and sectional characteristics of a structural element, due to the environmental damaging effects, changes its mechanical behaviour and varies both the internal stress redistribution and the kinematics through which it reaches its ultimate state. To identify such a behaviour, the evolution of both the damaging process and its mechanical consequences have to be taken into account. This paper presents a computational approach for the analysis of reinforced and prestressed concrete elements under sustained loading conditions and subjected to given damaging scenarios. The effects of the diffusion of aggressive agents, of the onset and development of the corrosion state in the reinforcement and the corresponding mechanical response are studied. As known, the corrosion on the reinforcing bars influences the damaging rate in the cracking pattern evolution; hence, the damage development and the mechanical behaviours are considered as coupled phenomena. The reliability of such an approach is validated in modelling the diffusion of the aggressive agents and the changes in the mechanical response of simple structural elements whose experimental behaviour is reported in Literature. A second set of analyses studies the effects of the corrosion of the tendons of a P.C. beam and explores potentially unexpected structural responses caused by corrosion under different aggressive exposition. The role of the different types and of the different positions of the damaging agents is discussed. In particular, it is shown how the collapse mode of the beam may switch from flexural to shear type, in case corrosion is caused by a localized chloride attack in the shear span.

  • The reliability of reinforced concrete structures is frequently compromised by the deterioration caused by reinforcement corrosion. Evaluating the effect caused by reinforcement corrosion on structural behaviour of corrosion damaged concrete structures is essential for effective and reliable infrastructure management. In lifecycle management of corrosion affected reinforced concrete structures, it is difficult to correctly assess the lifecycle performance due to the uncertainties associated with structural resistance deterioration. This paper presents a stochastic deterioration modelling approach to evaluate the performance deterioration of corroded concrete structures during their service life. The flexural strength deterioration is analytically predicted on the basis of bond strength evolution caused by reinforcement corrosion, which is examined by the experimental and field data available. An assessment criterion is defined to evaluate the flexural strength deterioration for the time-dependent reliability analysis. The results from the worked examples show that the proposed approach is capable of evaluating the structural reliability of corrosion damaged concrete structures.
