  • Interest in electric vehicle is on the rise due to global eco-friendly policies. To improve the efficiency of electric vehicles, it is essential to reduce weights of components. Since electric vehicles have various electronic equipment, the research on stray current corrosion is required. In this research, a galvanostatic corrosion experiment was performed on 6061-T6 Al alloy for electric vehicle battery housing using chloride concentration and applied current density as variables in a solution simulating an acid rain environment. As a result of the experiment, when chloride concentration and applied current density were increased, corrosion damage became larger. In particular, pitting damage was dominant at an applied current density of 0.1 mA/cm2. Pitting damage over the entire surface was found at a current density of 1.0 mA/cm2. In conclusion, chloride concentration had a relatively large effect on localized corrosion. The applied current density had a great effect on uniform corrosion. However, in the case of applied current density, localized corrosion was also greatly affected by interaction with chloride.

  • An alternating current (AC) corrosion on buried pipeline has been studied using coupon and ER probe. Coupons and ER probes were applied to the sites from high value of AC voltage to low value based on the survey of AC voltages on buried gas transmission pipeline over the country. Parameters such as AC current density of coupon, AC voltage, cathodic protection potential, soil resistivity and frequency were monitored continually. Corrosion induced by AC was observed even under cathodically protected condition that met cathodic protection criterion (; below -850 mV vs. CSE). Corrosion rate was affected mainly not by AC voltage but by both of frequency and AC current density. An experimental corrosion rate relation could be obtained according to effective AC current density, in which AC corrosion rate increased linearly with effective AC current density, and its slope was 0.619 in coupon method and 0.885 in ER probes.

  • This research investigated the relationship between the corrosion damage characteristics of offshore wind steel substructure and the time of current density application by electrochemical accelerated short-term corrosion test. The galvanostatic corrosion was conducted on the steel specimens in natural seawater with a constant current density ranging from $1mA/cm^2$ to $200mA/cm^2$ for 1 ~ 180 min. Macro and micro observation was carried out on the surface of the corrosion damaged area using SEM and 3-dimensional analysis microscope. The weight loss of the specimens before and after was calculated as the difference between the initial weight prior to corrosion and weight after removal of the corrosion product. It was shown that during galvanostaic corrosion process, the corrosion behavior could be characterized by the onset of pitting corrosion in the early stage and the uniform corrosion in the late stage, showing damage development in the depth direction with the time of current application. The result of the 3D analysis revealed that both damage depth and surface roughness increased with increasing time of current application. The weight loss curves with time showed that a coefficient of determination ($R^2$) was relatively high for the relationship between the time of current application and weight loss. As a result, the degree of corrosion can be controlled by simply varying the time of current application.

  • Experiments were carried out to measure the corrosion potential and current density variations in the polarization curves of polypropylene. In particular, the results were examined to identify those influences affecting the corrosion potential, such as temperature, pH, salt, and oxygen. The Tafel slope for the anodic dissolution was determined based on the polarization effect under various conditions. Furthermore, the optimum conditions for the most rapid transformation were establish based on a variety of conditions, including temperature, pH, corrosion rate, and resistance of corrosion potential. The second anodic current density peak and maximum passive current density were designated as the critical corrosion sensitivity(I(sub)r/I(sub)f). This I(sub)r/I(sub)f value was then used to measure the critical corrosion sensitivity of polypropylene. The potentiodynamic parameters of corrosion were obtained using a Tafel plot.

  • This study is on the constant-current stress corrosion test, related to the load stress, in both the welded and non-welded zones of high tensile strength steel that is used for natural gas transmission. The surface corrosion pattern of the welded zone of API 5L-X65 specimens for natural gas transmission showed general corrosion and narrow pitting, and the pitting was increased with load stress. Initially, the average relative electrode potential and the average relative current of the high tensile strength steel, used for natural gas transmission specimens, were decreased rapidly, and the average relative electrode potential was higher and the average relative current was lower in welded zone, compared to base metal. The average relative electrode potential was decreased with load stress, and the average relative current was somewhat increased by increasing the load stress. The corrosion rate was less in welded zone, compared to base metal, and the corrosion rate was decreased by increasing the load stress.

  • Corrosion of reinforcing bars in reinforced concrete structures due to chloride attack in environments containing chloride ions is one of the most important factors in the destruction of concrete structures. According to the abundant reports that the corrosion rate around the repair area has increased due to the macro-cell current known as the incipient anode, it is necessary to understand the effective parameters. The main objective of this paper is to investigate the effect of the kinetic parameters of corrosion including the cathodic Tafel slope, exchange current density, and equilibrium potential in repair materials on the total corrosion rate and maximum corrosion rate in the patch repair system. With the numerical simulation of the patch repair system and concerning the effect of parameters such as electromotive force (substrate concrete activity level), length of repair area, and resistivity of substrate and repair concrete, and with constant other parameters, the sensitivity of the macro-cell current caused by changes in the kinetic parameters of corrosion of the repairing materials has been investigated. The results show that the maximum effect on the macro-cell current values occurred with the change of cathodic Tafel slope, and the effect change of exchange current density and the equilibrium potential is almost the same. In the low repair extant and low resistivity of the repairing materials, with the increase in the electromotive force (degree of substrate concrete activity) of the patch repair system, the sensitivity of the total corrosion current reduces with the reduction in the cathode Tafel slope. The overall corrosion current will be very sensitive to changes in the kinetic parameters of corrosion. The change in the cathodic Tafel slope from 0.16 to 0.12 V/dec and in 300 mV the electromotive force will translate into an increase of 200% of the total corrosion current. While the percentage of this change in currency density and equilibrium potential is 53 and 43 percent, respectively. Moreover, by increasing the electro-motive force, the sensitivity of the total corrosion current decreases or becomes constant. The maximum corrosion does not change significantly based on the modification of the corrosion kinetic parameters and the modification will not affect the maximum corrosion in the repair system. Given that the macro-cell current in addition to the repair geometry is influenced by the sections of reactions of cathodic, anodic, and ohmic drop in repair and base concrete materials, in different parameters depending on the dominance of each section, the sensitivity of the total current and maximum corrosion in each scenario will be different.

  • Direct current corrosion have being investigated by lots of scientists but Alternating current corrosion was ignored because the corrosion rate by AC was very small. Recently however, AC corrosion accidents have been reported in many other countries. So the study of AC corrosion is to be necessary in these days. In this paper, several experiments which intentionally imposed the AC or DC to the specimens also imposed AC and DC at the same time was carried out in the laboratory to examine the AC corrosion characteristics and in addition applied the same way in the field. Moreover, while the field investigations of the abnormal corrosion failures. It was the AC that caused one of corrosion failures.

  • Considering the tendency of development of electrification vehicles, development and verification of new evaluation technology is needed because of new technology applications. Recently, as the battery package is set outdoors of an electric vehicle, such vehicles are exposed to corrosive environments. Among major components connected to the battery package, rust prevention of high-voltage cables and connectors is considered the most important issue. For example, if corrosion of high voltage cable connectors occurs, the corrosion durability assessment of using an electric vehicle will be different from general environmental corrosion phenomena. The purpose of this study is to investigate the corrosion mechanism of high voltage cable connectors of an electric vehicle under various driving environments (road surface vibration, corrosion environment, current conduction by stray current, etc.) and develop an optimal rust prevention solution. To improve our parts test method, we have proposed a realistic test method to reproduce actual electric vehicle corrosion issues based on the principle test.

  • Effect of corrosion characteristics in relation to loaded stress in the welded zone of A5083-H116 aluminum alloy, in the seawater was studied. The corrosion experiment was performed for 120 hours on the specimens in the natural seawater tank with four steps of the loaded stress. The corrosion crack, corrosion rate, electrode potential, current, and corrosion pattern, etc. were examined for the specimens with the elapse of the immersion time. The main result derived from this study is the crack growth length is increased with the increasing loaded stress. The electrode potential and the corrosion current are decreased rapidly in the early stage of the corrosion, and then decreased gradually and stabilized eventually with the elapse of the immersion time. The test condition of the longer crack growth tends to show the higher corrosion rate. Corrosion pattern of the welded zone indicates that the depth and width of the pitting become increasing with the increasing loaded stress.

  • In this study, we investigated the corrosion damage characteristics of steel for offshore wind turbine tower substructure using an accelerated electrochemical test. The galvanostatic corrosion test method was employed with a conventional 3 electrode cell in natural sea water, and the steel specimen was served as a working electrode to induce corrosion in an accelerated manner. Surface and cross-sectional image of the damaged area were obtained by optical microscope and scanning electron microscope. The weight of the specimens was measured to determine the gravimetric change before and after corrosion test. The result revealed that the steel tended to suffer uniform corrosion rather than localized corrosion due to active dissolution reaction under the constant current regime. With increasing galvanostatic current density, the damage depth and surface roughness of surface was increased, showing approximately 25 times difference in damage depth between the lowest current density ($1mA/cm^2$) and the highest current density ($200mA/cm^2$). The gravimetric observation showed that the weight loss was proportionally increased with increment of current density that has 75 times different according by experimental conditions. Consequently, uniform corrosion of the steel specimen was conveniently induced by the electrochemically accelerated corrosion technique, and it was possible to control the extent of the corrosion damage by varying the current density.
