Currently, the demand for eco-friendly energy sources is high, which has prompted research on polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells. Both aluminum alloys and nickel alloys, which are commonly considered as materials of bipolar plates in fuel cells, oxide layers formed on the metal surface have excellent corrosion resistance. In this research, the electrochemical characteristics of 6061-T6 aluminum alloy and Inconel 600 were investigated with chloride concentrations in an acid environment that simulated the cathode condition of the PEMFC. After potentiodynamic polarization experiments, Tafel analysis and surface analysis were performed. Inconel 600 presented remarkably good corrosion resistance under all test conditions. The corrosion current density of 6061-T6 aluminum alloy was significantly higher than that of Inconel 600 under all test conditions. Also, 6061-T6 aluminum alloy and Inconel 600 presented uniform corrosion and intergranular corrosion, respectively. The Ni, Cr, and Fe, which are the main chemical compositions of Inconel 600, are higher than Al in the electromotive force series. And a double oxide film of NiO-Cr2O3, which is more stable than Al2O3, is formed. Thus, the corrosion resistance of Inconel 600 is better.
The aim of this study was to propose a multiple linear regression (MLR) equation to predict ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of 316L stainless steel with unspecified pit corrosion. Tensile specimens with pit corrosion were prepared using a potentiostatic acceleration test method. Pit corrosion was characterized by measuring ten factors using a confocal laser microscope. Data were collected from 22 tensile tests. At 85% confidence level, total pit volume, maximum pit depth, mean ratio of surface area, and mean area were significant factors showing linear relationships with UTS. The MLR equation using these three significant factors at a 85% confidence level showed considerable prediction performance for UTS. Determination coefficient (R2) was 0.903 with training and test data sets. The yield strength ratio of 316L stainless steel was found to be around 0.85. All specimens with a pit corrosion presented a yield ratio of approximately 0.85 with R2 of 0.998. Therefore, pit corrosion did not affect the yield ratio.
Effects of high-temperature environment and low-temperature environment on corrosion behaviours of 18Cr stainless steels (type 304L, type 441) in simulated selective catalytic reduction (SCR) environments were studied using weight loss test in each environment and rust analysis. With time to exposure to the high-temperature environment, type 441 was more resistant to corrosion than type 304L due to both higher diffusivity of Cr and lower thermal expansion coefficient in α-iron. The former provides a stable protective Cr2O3 layer. The latter leaded to low residual stress between scale and steel, reducing the spallation of the scale. With time to exposure to the low-temperature environment, on the other hand, type 304L was more resistant to corrosion than type 441. The lower resistance of type 441 was caused by Cr-depleted zone with less than 11% formed during the pre-exposure to a high-temperature environment, unlike type 304L. It was confirmed by results from the crevice corrosion test of sensitised 11Cr steel. Hence, to achieve higher corrosion resistance in simulated SCR environments, ferritic stainless steels having lower thermal expansion coefficient and higher diffusivity of Cr but containing more than 18% Cr are recommended.
In any developing nation major investment goes for infrastructure and it is not exception in India. Good numbers of buildings, bridges, shopping malls, car parks etc. are coming up with steel for sustainable development. Thus protecting the structures from corrosion are the challenges faced by professionals for all types of steel structures. About 3% of GDP is accounted for loss due to corrosion. To combat this up to date corrosion map is called for as the country has wide variation of climatic zones with vastcoastline. Logically organic paint system can be prescribed based on the corrosion rate on bare steel with respect to environment. Present paper will emphasis on the study conducted on two types of structural steel coated with organic paint located in twomarine environment having been exposed for three years, Test coupons made from steels both bare and coated are deployed at two field stations having marine (Digha) and industrial marine (Channai) environments. Various tests like AC impedance DC corrosion, polarisation, salt spray test, $SO_2$ chamber and Raman spectroscopy were carried out both in laboratory on fresh as well as coupons collected from exposure sites. Rust formed on the bare and scribed coated coupons are investigated. It is found that normal marine environment at Digha exhibits higher corrosion rate than polluted marine environment in Channai. Rust analysis indicates formation of ${\propto}$-FeoOH protects or reduces corrosion rate at Channai and formation of non-protective ${\gamma}$-FeoOH increases corrosion rate at Digha. The slower corrosion rate in Channai than at Digha is attributed due to availability of $SO_2$, in the environment, which converts non‐protective rust ${\gamma}$-FeoOH to protective rust ${\propto}$-FeoOH. While comparing the damage on the coated panels it is found that low alloy structural steel provides less damage than plain carbon steel. From the experimentations a suitable paint system specification is drawn for identical environments for low medium and high durability.
A Zr-based amorphous alloy specimen was produced by vacuum die casting process. The salt spray test was carried out using the specimens in the as-cast, $Al_2O_3$ and $ZrO_2$ particle blasted state. Using these specimens, the SEM-EDX and XRD analyses, DSC measurement and bending strength test were conducted. After the salt spray test, the specimens were not experienced phase change and thermal characteristics of the alloys were remained unchanged. In the as-cast specimen, corrosion products were not observed. However, in the $Al_2O_3$ particle blasted specimen, pitting corrosion occurred and the detected corrosion products were $ZrCl_2$ and $NaZrO_3$. Due to the salt spray test, bending strength of the $Al_2O_3$ blasted specimens showed about 100 MPa lower strength than the other specimens. The bending fracture surface was vein pattern which was shown typically in the amorphous alloys.
This paper was investigation of the stres corrosion cracking(SCC) mechanism and the properties of corrosion fracture surface of glass fiber reinforced plastics(GFRP) produced by hand lay up(HLU) method in synthetic sea water. Test material is GFRP, that was used vinylester type epoxy acrylate resin and an unsaturated polyester as the matrix and the chopped strand mat(CSM) type E-glss fiber as the reinforcement. The slow strain rate test(SSRT) was performed on dry, wet and saturated wet specimens in sea water. Here the pH concentration of synthetic sea water was 8.2 and the strain rate is 1 x $10^{-6}$($sec^{-1}$) and test temperature ranges varied from $-60^{\circ}C$ to $80^{\circ}C$. It could be confirmed the fact that wet specimens tested at a particular test temperature ranges were appeared the eviences of SCC such as con-planar, mirror and hackle zone. Moreover, SCC of GFRP in sea water was characterised by falt fracture surfaces with only small amounts of fiber pull-out, in partial.
This study has been conducted to monitor the corrosion rate of cathodically protected structure and corrosion inhibited system using multi-line thin-film electrical resistance (TFER) sensor in various environments. The field test data of TFER sensor for the corrosion monitoring of cathodically protected underground pipeline in soil environments and of corrosion inhibited gas heaters were also presented. The sensor was found to be a powerful method to commit the sensitive pick-up of small corrosion rate which can be observed in the cathodically protected and corrosion inhibited systems.

Heavy duty coating are required to have minimum durable period of 15 years under average usage environment because these paints are coated with purpose of anti-corrosion, antifouling, plastering etc. Onto steel structures constructed upon land and sea and other ferrous structures of electric power generation plants, electricity transmission towers, large structures of various plants, etc. Therefore we tried to estimate heavy duty coating longevity through reliability evaluation method and used combined cyclic anti-conrrosion test method composed of drying, moisturizing and salt spray as for accelerated life test to estimate longevity. Accelerated life test hours to heavy duty coating of first grade (with longevity not less than 15 years) specification may be obtained from troubleless test hours $t_n=\frac{B_p}{n^{1/\beta}}\left[\frac{1n(1-CL)}{1n(1-p)} \right]^{1/\beta}=19.671$ (yr) where shape parameter $\beta=1.1$, confidence level CL=80 %, warranty life $B_{10}=15$ yr and sampling size n=10 (2 sets). Because acceleration factor {AF} found by accelerated test is 41.7, accelerated life test hours required may be represented about 4,132 hr so that if this amount of hours is converted to number of cycles(6 hr/cycle) of complex cycle corrosion resistance test then the amount is tantamount about 690 cycles. That means if there does not occur trouble failure (with defect factor sum not more than 20) during when there is performed 690 cycles of combined cyclic anti-corrosion test to heavy duty coating specimen then it signifies that there can be warranted longevity $B_{10}$ of 15 yr under condition of confidence level CL=80 %.
Objectives Effects of nanoparticles including zinc oxide nanoparticles, titanium oxide nanoparticles, and their mixtures on skin corrosion and irritation were investigated by using in vitro 3D human skin models ($KeraSkin^{TM}$) and the results were compared to those of an in vivo animal test. Methods Skin models were incubated with nanoparticles for a definite time period and cell viability was measured by the 3-(4, 5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2.5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide method. Skin corrosion and irritation were identified by the decreased viability based on the pre-determined threshold. Results Cell viability after exposure to nanomaterial was not decreased to the pre-determined threshold level, which was 15% after 60 minutes exposure in corrosion test and 50% after 45 minutes exposure in the irritation test. IL-$1{\alpha}$ release and histopathological findings support the results of cell viability test. In vivo test using rabbits also showed non-corrosive and non-irritant results. Conclusions The findings provide the evidence that zinc oxide nanoparticles, titanium oxide nanoparticles and their mixture are 'non corrosive' and 'non-irritant' to the human skin by a globally harmonized classification system. In vivo test using animals can be replaced by an alternative in vitro test.
The corrosion problems in water distribution system are reduced by decreasing the agressivity of drinking water which is evaluated by marble test and saturation indices(LSI or CCPP etc.). Marble test is a reliable method to determine the actual saturation condition of treated water. This study was done to determined the aggressivity of tap water and the effectiveness of $Ca(OH)_2$ and NaOH dosage for corrosion control. The drinking water in Seoul were evaluated by marble test and Langelier Index(LSI) and Calcium Carbonate Precipitation Potential(CCPP). The results indicated that the drinking water in Seoul were undersaturated as Calcium Carbonate($CaCO_3$). The LSI and CCPP of the water treated with $Ca(OH)_2$ were higher than that of water treated with NaOH. Therefore, to increase the Alkalinity and Calcium Hardness for corrosion control in water distribution system, $Ca(OH)_2$ is more effective than NaOH.
