Steel structures exposed to the outdoors experienced several types of corrosion, which may reduce their thickness. Since atmospheric corrosion can induce economic losses, it is important to consider the atmospheric corrosion behavior of a variety of metals and alloys. This work performed outdoor exposure tests for 10 years at 14 areas in Korea and calculated the atmospheric corrosion rate of weathering steel. This paper discussed the atmospheric corrosion behavior of weathering steel based on various corrosion factors. The average corrosion rates in coastal, industrial, urban, and rural areas were found to range from (2.83 to 4.23) ㎛/y, (2.99 to 4.23) ㎛/y, (1.72 to 3.14) ㎛/y, and (1.57 to 2.85) ㎛/y respectively. It should be noted that the maximum corrosion rate was about 6.0 times greater than the average corrosion rate. Regardless of the exposure sites, the color differences were increased, but the glossiness was reduced and there was no relationship between the corrosion rate and environmental factors and the glossiness.
This study investigates the effects of corrosion resistance characteristics of opponent materials in relative motion on the sliding wear behavior of mild carbon steel. Pin specimens made of mild carbon steel are tested at several sliding speeds against mating discs made of two types of alloyed steels, such as type D2 tool steel (STD11) and type 420 stainless steel (STS420J2), with different corrosion resistance characteristics in a pin-on-disc type sliding wear test machine. The results clearly show that the sliding wear behavior of mild carbon steel is influenced by the corrosion resistance characteristics of the mating disc materials at low sliding speeds. However, the sliding wear behavior at high sliding speeds is irrelevant to the characteristics because of the rising temperature. During the steady state wear period, the sliding wear rate of mild carbon steel against the type 420 stainless steel at a sliding speed of 0.5 m/s increases considerably unlike against the type D2 tool steel. This may be because the better corrosion resistance characteristics achieve a worse tribochemical reactivity. However, during the running-in wear period at low sliding speeds, the wear behavior of mild carbon steel is influenced by the microstructure after heat treatment of the mating disc materials rather than by their corrosion resistance characteristics.
Atmospheric corrosion is generally an electrochemical degradation process of metal. It can be caused by various corrosion factors of atmospheric component, weather, and air pollutants. Moisture, particles of sea salts, and sulfur dioxide are major factors in atmospheric corrosion. Galvanizing coating is one of the most efficient ways to protect iron from corrosion by zinc plating on the surface of the iron. Galvanized steels are being widely used in automobiles, building structures, roofing, and other industrial structures due to their high corrosion resistance compared to bare iron. Atmospheric corrosion of galvanized steel has shown complex corrosion behavior depending on coating process, coating thickness, atmospheric environment, and air pollutants. In addition, different types and kinds of corrosion products can be produced depending on the environment. Lifespan of galvanized steels is also affected by the environment. Therefore, the objective of this study was to determine the corrosion behavior of galvanized steel under atmospheric corrosion at six locations in Korea. When the exposure time was increased, content of zinc from GA surface decreased while contents of iron and oxygen tended to increase. On the other hand, content of iron was constant even after 36 months of exposure of GI.

$CO_2$ corrosion product scales formed on 13 Cr tubing steel in autoclave and in the simulated corrosion environment of oil field are investigated in the paper. The surface and cross-section profiles of the scales were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), the chemical compositions of the scales were analyzed using energy dispersion analyzer of X-ray (EDAX), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) to confirm the corrosion mechanism of the 13 Cr steel in the simulated $CO_2$ corrosion environment. The results show that the corrosion scales are formed by the way of fashion corrosion, consist mainly of four elements, i.e. Fe, Cr, C and O, and with a double-layer structure, in which the surface layer is constituted of bulky and incompact crystals of $FeCO_3$, and the inner layer is composed of compact fine $FeCO_3$ crystals and amorphous $Cr(OH)_3$. Because of the characteristics of compactness and ionic permeating selectivity of the inner layer of the corrosion product scales, 13 Cr steel is more resistant in $CO_2$ corrosion environment.
This paper studies on the wear corrosion behavior of induction hardening high strength cast iron in the acidic environments. In a variety of pH solutions, wear corrosion behavior of GC 300 with a variety of contact pressures was investigated, and corrosion wear behavior after immersion test was considered. Also, electrochemical polarization test for GC 300 was carried out in various pH solutions. The main results are as following: In the strong acidic environment, wear corrosion rate of GC 300 appears highly and in the neutral environment is stable. Also, graphitic corrosion in the strong acidic environment occurs. The corrosion current density of GC 300 becomes high in a order of pH 1 > pH 2 > pH 4 > pH 6.5.

The corrosion behavior of duplex stainless steel AISI 2205 was investigated in ethylene glycol-water mixture in the presence of 50 W/V % LiBr at different concentrations and different temperatures. Cyclic polarization, impedance measurements and Mott-Schottky analysis were used to study the corrosion behavior the semi conductive properties of the passive films. The results showed that with increasing in the ethylene glycol concentration to 10 V/V%, the corrosion rate of the steel alloy substrate increased. In higher concentrations of ethylene glycol, corrosion current of steel decreased. The results of scanning electron microscopy of electrode surface confirmed the electrochemical tests. Electrochemical experiment showed that duplex steel was stable for pitting corrosion in this environment. The increase in the ethylene glycol concentration led to increasing the susceptibility to pitting corrosion. The corrosion current increased as the temperature rise and also pitting potentials and repassivation potentials shifted towards the less positive values as the temperature increased. According to Mott-Schottky analysis, passive films of stainless steel at the different temperatures showed both n-type and p-type semiconductor behavior in different potential.
The aim of this study was to investigate effects of hafnium content on the corrosion behavior of Ti alloys in electrolyte containing chloride ion. For this study, Ti-Hf binary alloys contained 10 wt%, 20 wt% and 30 wt% Hf were manufactured in a vacuum arc-melting furnace and subjected to heat treatment for 12h at $1000^{\circ}C$ in an argon atmosphere. The pitting corrosion behavior of the specimens was examined through potentiodynamic and potentiostatic tests in 0.9 wt% NaCl electrolyte at $36.5{\pm}1^{\circ}C$. The corrosion morphology of Ti-xHf alloys was investigated using optical microscopy (OM) and X-ray diffractometer (XRD). From the optical microstructures and XRD results, needle-like martensite ($\alpha$') phases of the Ti-xHf alloys increased with an increase of Hf addition. Corrosion current density $(I_{corr})$ and current density $(I_{300mV})$ in passive region decreased, whereas, corrosion potential increased with Hf content. At the constant potential ($300mV_{SCE}$), current density decreased as time increased.
Corrosion behavior of welded SWS400 steel used for bridges was studied in a range of the acid-rain environment using immersion, potentiodynamic polartization, polarization resistance, and galvanic corrosion tests. The SWS400 steel exhibited active corrosion behavior in the range of acid-rain environment, i.e. no passivation. As the results of immersion corrosion test, Tafel extrapolation method, and polarization resistance measurement, the average corrosion rats of the steels were 0.31-0.72 mm/year in the pH of 4-5, and 0.17 mm/yera in the pH 6, respectively. The steel showed a resistance to corrosion in the pH 6. The observed active behavior of SWS400 steel in chloride-containing environment indicated that the chloride ions exerts a detrimental influence on the formation of passive films. Galvanic corrosion was observed between the weld and the base metals because the weld is anodic to the base metal.
