  • This paper proposes a new algorithm for detecting and recognizing overlapped objects among a stack of arbitrarily located objects using a signature representation scheme. The proposed algorithm consists of two processes of detecting overlap of objects and of determining the boundary between overlapping objects. To determine overlap of objects, in the first step, the edge image of object region is extracted and those areas in the object region are considered as the object areas if an area is surrounded by a closed edge. For each object, its signature image is constructed by measuring the distances of those edge points from the center of the object, along the angle axis, which are located at every angle with reference to the center of the object. When an object is not overlapped, its features which consist of the positions and angles of outstanding points in the signature are searched in the database to find its corresponding model. When an object is overlapped, its features are partially matched with those object models among which the best matching model is selected as the corresponding model. The boundary among the overlapping objects is determined by projecting the signature to the original image. The performance of the proposed algorithm has been tested with the task of picking the top or non-overlapped object from a stack of arbitrarily located objects. In the experiment, a recognition rate of 98% has been achieved.

  • In case of limited power supply, a rotating shaft system may not reach its operating speed that is greater than its critical speed, but the speed oscillates with small ampllitude near critical speed. As a result, it is considered that the operating mode plays an important role in the smooth start of machines. In order to investigate the dynamic behaviors of the rotating shaft system at the beginning stage, one has derived the equations of motion whose degrees of freedom is three, two translations and one rotation. The simultaneous differential equations are numerically solved by using runge-Kutta method, and thus the small time step length could be required corresponding to the stability of solution. Three types of operating modes dependent upon the driving torque rate have been numerically investigated according to the maximum displacement of shaft center. The first type of relation is linear, the second type is composed of two linear curves recommended by machine manufacturer, and the last one is the proposed torque curve reflecting the frequency response curve of one degree of freedom system. For the second type of modes, it is found that the optimal range of intermediate speed to the critical speed lies between 0.8 and 0.9. In addition to that, the maximum displacement can be reduced more if the third type of mode is utilized.

  • In the planar flow casting(PFC) process, the conditions of the melt puddle between nozzle and rotating wheel affect significantly the quality and dimensional uniformity of the downstream ribbon. For stable puddle formation, the nozzle is placed very close to the quenching wheel, so the surface-tension and wall-adhesion forces have an important effect upon the fluid flow.\`In this study the planar flow casting process has been mode]ed using the VOF method for free surface tracking. The transient puddle formation from the present analysis shows good agreements with the previous experimental results. Furthermore, the variation of melt temperature and the corresponding cooling rate of the melt have been examined. The present results also show how the melt puddle can be farmed on the rotating substrate, how the melt flows within the puddle, and how the changes of the process variables affect the puddle formation and its corresponding fluid flow and heat transfer behavior.

  • Sensitized photolysis of two onium borates (diphenyliodoium and dimethylphenacylsulfonium tetrakis(pentafluorophenyl)borate, 1a and 2a , respectively) and cationic photopolymerization of an epoxy monomer by the photolysis were investigate. The onium borates were sensitized by the excited singlet of the athracenes(non-substituted, 9-methyl-and 9, 10-dimethylanthracene) and generated acid by decomposing teemselves. The quantum yields of photobleaching of the anthracenes($\Phi$-AH) and acid generatiion (øacid) by the onium borates were the same order as those of the corresponding onium salts in aerated solutions (methanol and acetoitrile) and in argon(Ar) saturated acetonitrile. However, in the photolysis of the iodonium borates 1a in Ar saturated MeOH , øacid was much higher than the corresponding ø-AH. The acid generated by the photolysis of the onium borates initiated cationic polymerization of an epoxy monomer. The values of both rate of polymerization (Rp) and degree of conversion on the photopolymerization for the iodonium borated 1a were higher than those of the sulfoium borate 2a. In the photopolymerization for the iodonium borate 1a, both the Rp value and the degree of conversinio increased upon the addition of glycerol as a hydrogen donor. It is suggested that the increase of both values may be caused with the increase of øacid by addition of glycerol.

  • The theoretical optimum quaternary composition for improving the thermal stability of Al-Ti alloy was recently proposed. On the basis of the suggestion, quaternary Al-Ti-V-Zr alloy powders corresponding to the optimum compositions, one of which belongs to the region of the smallest lattice misfit between the matrix and the precipitates and the other belongs to the region of the smallest rate constant of coarsening, were prepared by mechanical alloying and the powders were vacuum-hot-pressed at $430^{\circ}C$ under the pressure of 800 MPa. The thermal stability of the specimens was evaluated by hardness testing after isothermal aging up to 400 hrs at various temperatures. The decrease of hardness of Al-Ti-V-Zr alloys was smaller than that of Al-Ti alloys. It was considered to be due to the formation of $Al_3Zr$ type and$Al_3Ti$ type quaternary precipitates having smaller lattice misfit than $Al_3Ti$ and the increase of volume fraction of All0v during the isothermal aging. The quaternary Al-Ti-V-Zr alloys corresponding to the smallest lattice misfit showed the most improved thermal stablilty and it was mainly considered to be due to the formation of All0v.

  • PET microfiber fabric dissociation reactions by ethylene glycol (EG) catalayzed by the corresponding EG anions were examined to provide an empirical basis for the improvement of a PET microfiber fabrics. The alkoxide ions, monosodium ethylene glycolate in ethylene glycol solution(MSEG-EG) are prepared by the reaction between NaH and the EG respectively. The dissociation reactions were carried out until the sample PET microfiber fabrics dissociate up to 80%. Temperature used ranged 100~$160^{\circ}C$. The kinetic behaviors of the dissociated PET microfiber fabrics were examined. The results are as follows : 1. In all cases, it was found that the PET-alkoxide dissociation rate constants increased exponentially with increasing temperature. The activation energies (Ea) of the reactions were 23.31kcal/mol in PET-EG system respectively. The calculated enthalpies of the activated [PET-EG] complexes from the corresponding Ea values were 22.53 ~ 22.61 kcal/mol, and the entropies were -19.03 ~ -19.24 kcal/mol/k respectively. 2. The kinetic behavior of the PET-alkoxide dissociation reactions examined was explained by the transition state theory. PET-alkoxide transition state is believed to be formed during the ester interchange mechanism between PET and MSEG-EG in the course of the PET dissociation reactions.

  • An experimental investigation was performed under steady flow condition to assess hydrodynamic performance of floating-type monoleaflet polymer valves (MLPV) withdifferent leaflet thickness. The St. Jude Medical valve (SJMV) was also used for comparison test. Pressure drops of MLPVS are larger than those for other types of polymer valves and mechanical valves. Furthermore, the thicker is the leaflet thickness of the polymer valve, the larger are the corresponding pressure drop. The velocity profiles for MLPs reveal a large reversed flow region downward to the valve position. The maximum wall shear stresses of MLPVS at a flow rate of $30{\ell}$/min are in the range 50-130 dyn/$cm^2$, and the corresponding maximum Reynolds shear stresses are in the range of 100-500 dyn/$cm^2$, respectively, which are beyond the allowable limit clinically. In contrast, floating-type monoleaflet polymer valves show better hydrodynamic performance in leakage volume. From the designing point of view, it may be concluded that the optimum thickness of leaflet for better hydrodynamic performance is one of the Important parameters.

  • Due to the rapid increase of long-distance transportation, particular attentions have been paid to truck tires, especially to their dynamic characteristics. In this research, experimental modal analysis on two kinds of light-duty truck tires, i.e., radial tire and bias tire, are performed by using GRFP(global rational fraction polynomial) method to investigate differences of the dynamic behavior of the two tires. The test results have shown that the modal frequencies of bias tire are much higher than the corresponding values of radial tire with a similar mode shape, which is in accordance with the fact that the radial rigidity of bias tire is higher than that of radial tire. And most of the modal decay rates of bias tire are larger than those of radial tire within the scope of this experiment. In the frequency domain range of test, the bias tire has extra modes, which do not occur in the radial tire. This difference is based on the fact that the circumferential rigidity of the bias tire is quire low whereas that of radial tire is so high that the frequencies of the corresponding modes are out of the frequency range of test.

  • In this paper, the carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) grids embedded in polymer cement mortar (PCM) shotcrete (CFRP-PCM method) was conducted to repair the degraded tunnel linings with a cavity. Subsequently, the reinforcing effect of the CFRP-PCM method under different degrees of lining deterioration was quantitatively evaluated. Finally, the limit state design method of the M-N interaction curve was conducted to determine whether the structure reinforced by the CFRP-PCM method is in a safe state. The main results indicated that when the cavity is at the shoulder, the lining damage rate is more serious. In addition, the remarkably reinforcing effect on the degraded tunnel linings could be achieved by applying a higher grade of CFRP grids, whereas the optimization effect is no longer obvious when the grade of CFRP grids is too high (CR8); Furthermore, it is found that the M-N numerical values of the ten reinforcing designs of the CFRP-PCM method are distributed outside the corresponding M-N theoretical interaction curves, and these designs should be avoided in the corresponding reinforcing engineering.
