  • Time of difference of arrival (TDOA) method using passive sonar sensor array has normally been used to estimate the location of a concealed moving target in underwater environment. Particle filter has been introduced for effective target estimation for non-Gaussian and nonlinear systems. In this paper, we propose a GPU-based acceleration of target position estimation using particle filter and propose efficient embedded system and software architecture. For the TDOA measurement from the passive sonar sensor, we use the generalized cross correlation phase transform (GCC-PHAT) method to obtain the correlation coefficient of the signal using FFT and we try to accelerate the calculation of GCC-PHAT based TDOA measurements using FFT with GPU CUDA. We also propose parallelization method of the target position estimation algorithm using the GPU CUDA to update the state of each particle for the target position estimation using the measured values. The target estimation algorithm was verified using Matlab and implemented using GPU CUDA. Then, we realized the proposed signal processing acceleration system using NVIDIA Jetson TX1 as the target board to analyze in terms of the execution time. The execution time of the algorithm is reduced by 55% to the CPU standalone-operation on the target board. Experiment results show that the proposed architecture is a feasible solution in terms of high-performance and area-efficient architecture.

  • Time-delay estimation between two receivers is a technique that has been applied in a variety of fields, from underwater acoustics to room acoustics and robotics. There are two types of time delay estimation techniques: one that estimates the amount of time delay from the correlation between receivers, and the other that parametrically models the time delay between receivers and estimates the parameters by system recognition. The latter has the characteristic that only a small fraction of the system's parameters are directly related to the delay. This characteristic can be exploited to improve the accuracy of the estimation by methods such as Lasso regularization. However, in the case of Lasso regularization, the necessary information is lost. In this paper, we propose a method using Elastic Net that adds Ridge regularization to Lasso regularization to compensate for this. Comparing the proposed method with the conventional Generalized Cross Correlation (GCC) method and the method using Lasso regularization, we show that the estimation variance is very small even for white Gaussian signal sources and colored signal sources.

  • In this paper, we propose a correlation-based subspace estimation technique, which is called square-root forward/backward correlation-based projection approximation subspace tracking(SRFB-COPAST). The SRFB-COPAST utilizes the forward and backward correlation matrix as well as square-root recursive matrix update in projection approximation approach to develop the subspace tracking algorithm. With the projection approximation, the square-root recursive FB-COPAST is presented. The proposed algorithm has the better performance than the recently developed COPAST method.

  • In stereo vision applications, disparity estimation is often performed to corresponding pixels. Using window-based correlations is a fast and standard approach to the disparity estimation. In this paper, we analyse the behaviour of the correlation-based disparity estimation and improve its performance by combining it with a segmentation scheme. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm provides faithful disparity maps.

  • In this paper, a blind symbol timing offset (STO) estimation method is proposed for offset quadrature phase-shift keying (OQPSK) modulated signals, which also works for other linearly modulated signals (LMS) such as binary-PSK, QPSK, 𝜋/4-QPSK, and minimum-shift keying. There are various methods available for blind STO estimation of LMS; however, none work in the case of OQPSK modulated signals. The popular cyclic correlation method fails to estimate STO for OQPSK signals, as the offset present between the in-phase (I) and quadrature (Q) components causes the cyclic peak to disappear at the symbol rate frequency. In the proposed method, a set of close and approximate offsets is used to compensate the offset between the I and Q components of the received OQPSK signal. The STO in the time domain is represented as a phase in the cyclic frequency domain. The STO is therefore calculated by obtaining the phase of the cyclic peak at the symbol rate frequency. The method is validated through extensive theoretical study, simulation, and testbed implementation. The proposed estimation method exhibits robust performance in the presence of unknown carrier phase offset and frequency offset.

  • In this paper, we suggest a noise estimation method for speech enhancement in nonstationary noisy environments. The proposed method consists of the following two main processes. First, in order to receive fewer affect of variable signals, a best fitting regression line is used, which is obtained by applying a least squares method to coefficient magnitudes in a node with a uniform wavelet packet transform. Next, in order to update the noise estimation efficiently, a differential forgetting factor and a correlation coefficient per subband are used, where subband is employed for applying the weighted value according to the change of signals. In particular, this method has the ability to update the noise estimation by using the estimated noise at the previous frame only, without utilizing the statistical information of long past frames and explicit nonspeech frames by voice activity detector. In objective assessments, it was observed that the performance of the proposed method was better than that of the compared (minima controlled recursive averaging, weighted average) methods. Furthermore, the method showed a reliable result even at low SNR.

  • In this paper, we propose a new method of improving accuracy of motion estimation in mobile environments, compared with Rosten's algorithm. The present method selects corners as feature points. The Rosten's algorithm uses simple addition and subtraction to detect the corners. Although it has the advantage of faster processing speed, Rosten's algorithm has a drawback of low performance in motion estimation. We use the NCC(Normalized Cross Correlation) coefficients to match the corners, and remove in two steps the outliers of inaccurate matching corners. We compare the proposed algorithm with Rosten's algorithm by applying both to the real images. We find that the proposed method shows better performance than Rosten's algorithm in motion estimation. In addition, we implement the present method on mobile devices and confirm that it works in mobile environments in real time.

  • An accurate estimation of software development size is an important factor in calculating reasonable cost of project development and determining its success. In this study, we propose estimation models, using function point based on the functional correlation between software, with empirical data. Three models($FP_{est}(I)$, $FP_{est}(II)$, $FP_{est}(III)$) are developed with correlation and regression analysis. The validity of the models is evaluated by the significance test by comparing values of Mean Magnitude of Relative Error (MMRE) and predictions of each model at level n%. Model $FP_{est}(III)$ proved to be superior to other models such as IFPC(Indicative Function Point Count), EFPC(Estimated Function Point Count), EPFS(Early Prediction of Function Size), $FP_{est}(I)$, and $FP_{est}(II)$. As a result, the accuracy of the model appears to be very high to determine the usefulness of the model to finally overcome weakness of other estimation models. The model can be efficiently used to estimate project development size including software size or manpower allocation.

  • In this paper, we propose a method to improve the performance of the direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation of a speech source using a multiple signal classification (MUSIC)-based algorithm. Basically, the proposed algorithm utilizes a complex coefficient band pass filter to generate the narrow band signals for signal analysis. Also, reverberation component reduction and quadratic function-based response approximation in MUSIC spatial spectrum are utilized to improve the accuracy of DOA estimation. Experimental results show that the proposed method outperforms the well-known generalized cross-correlation (GCC)-based DOA estimation algorithm in the aspect of the estimation error and success rate, respectively.Abstract should be placed here. • This study comprised 157 extracted teeth, 73 of the teeth originated from mates and 84 from females, the age range was 12-79 years. The correlation coefficient of each Gustafson's criteria in relation to age was carried out. Age estimation were performed on 157 teeth according to the method by Gustafson and by use of multiple regression, as used by Johanson, after evaluating the six criteria of Gustafson by multiple regression computer analysis. Two prediction formulas and standard deviations were compared with each other. The results were as follows : 1. The author found that six Gustafson's criteria had strong correlation with age except root resorption, and correlation coefficients were r = 0.79 (Transparent dentin), r=0.72 (Secondary dentin), r 0.69 (Periodontal change), r=0.63(Attrition), r = 0.39 (Root resorption), respecti vely. 2. The age estimation formula by Gustafson's method was calculated as follows: Y 8.88 + 3.52X r =0.87, r2 = 0.76, SD = 8.18, F = 483.56, P < 0.01 The age estimation formula by multiple regression was calculated as follows: Y 8.57 + 6.37T + 6.37T + 4.63P + 2.70S + 2.40C + 3.08A + 1.34R r= 0.89, r2 = 0.78, SD = 7.82, F = 91.62, P < 0.01, Durbin-Watson Coefficient = 1.09 3. In comparison of two estimation formulas, the formula by multiple regression, the method of Johanson, was found to be slightly more reliable than Gustafson's method. Gustafson's method SD = 8.18, Multiple regression (Johanson's method) SD = 7.82 4. It was reaffirmed that Gustafson's six criteria could be a independent variable in multiple regression analysis.
