  • In this study, meteorological characteristics concerning the occurrence of fog are analyzed using 4-years (2000-2003) data at Chuncheon. From the analysis of meteorological characteristics, the fog at Chuncheon occurred before sunrise time and disappeared after that time and lasted for 2-4 hours. When fog occurred, on the whole, wind direction was blew the northerly and wind speed was below 2.1 m/s. Especially, about 42 % of foggy day fell on the calm($0{\sim}0.2m/s$) conditions. The difference between air temperature and dew point temperature near the surface were mainly less than $2^{\circ}C$. For the lack of water surface temperature, the water sur-face temperature was calculated by using Water Quality River Reservoir System (WQRRS). In Chuncheon, there is close correlation between the frequency of fog day and outflow from Soyang reservoir and high frequency of occurrence due to the difference between air and cold outlet water temperature.

  • Monitored data (rainfall runoff and water quality) from 4 different paddy sites over 3 years were compared to analyze the effect of irrigation water management on irrigation supply and rainfall runoff quality in Korea. The system of rice intensification water management was adopted at one site (SRI) while the conventional water management method was used for rice culture at the other three sites (CT, SD and HD). The soil texture at SRI, CT and SD was sandy loam while that at HD was silt loam. The average reduction of irrigation supply at SRI compared with CT, SD and HD during the 3 years studied was 49%, 51% and 55%, respectively. The average event mean concentration (EMC) at SRI compared with that at CT, SD and HD was decreased by 35% (BOD), 44% (COD), 47% (SS), 19% (TN) and 38% (TP). The correlation between rainfall runoff and the measured non-point source (NPS) pollutants was very good in general. The comparison revealed that SRI water management significantly reduced both irrigation supply and EMC in rainfall runoff. Paddy NPS pollution was closely related to factors that induce runoff such as rainfall and irrigation supply. It was concluded that SRI management could be an effective and practical option to cope with both water shortage due to climate change and water quality improvement in rural watersheds. However, further studies are recommended in large irrigation districts for use in the development and implementation of NPS pollution policies since the data was collected from field sized paddies.

  • In order to manage the water quality in reservoir, it is necessary to understand the temporal and spatial variation of reservoirs and to classify the reservoirs. In this research, agricultural reservoirs are classified according to physical characteristics (depth, residence time, shape of the reservoir etc) and water quality using multivatriate analysis (PCA and CA). CA (Cluster Analysis) method classify reservoirs into several groups as a similarity of the reservoirs, but it is difficult to indicate a full list to the one table. In case of PCA (Principle Component Analysis) method, it has the advantage for the classification on the reservoirs depending on the water quality similarity and also it is useful to analyze the relationship between related factors through correlation analysis. However PCA is limited to classify into several groups based on the characteristics of the reservoirs and each user should be classified as randomly subjective according to the relative position of the reservoir in the figure. In conclusions, compared to conventional reservoirs classification methods, both CA and PCA methods are considered to be a classification method that describes the nature of the reservoir well, but classification results has a restriction on use, so further research will be needed to complement.

  • The Juam reservoir, hydrological investigations on the catchment environment and pollutants inflow have been carried out simultaneously. The average COD in 1992 observed in Juam reservoir was 2.3 mg/L, and reached to 2.72 mg/L in 2005 that is increased 0.23 mg/L for 13 years. Following this trend, the water duality is expected to deteriorate down to the second-grade water quality exceeding the 3 mg/L limit in 2010. The concentration exceeding the value of 46.5 $mg/m^3$ will not guarantee the water quality better than $2^{nd}$ grade drinking water resource since correlative between COD and chl-a is y=0.0732x+2.5953 its $r^2=0.8141$. This result will help control the algal growth in the future by taking into account the expected value as a monitoring target.

  • This study aims to determine the community patterns of benthic macroinvertebrates and analyze the relationship between the communities and the water quality in the Pungyeongjeong Stream. We collected the samples four times by season. The number of species was 28 and the dominant species were Cheumatopsyche brevilineata, Hydropsyche kozhantschikovi, Baetis fuscatus, Chironomidae spp., and so on. The range of the dominant index was 0.54 to 0.93 and the mean was 0.77. The range of the diversity index was 0.94 to 2.54, and of the mean index it was 1.75. The ratio of filtering-collectors and clingers got lower, but the ratio of gathering-collectors and sprawlers got higher as collection progressed from the upper stream to the lower stream. The results of the Pearson correlation analysis showed COD, SS, TOC and total coliforms were highly related with biotic indices of benthic macroinvertebrates. The results of cluster analysis and non-metric multidimensional scaling ordination showed that the survey sites and periods were divided into three groups. The survey sites were divided into upper stream and middle-lower stream. The survey periods were divided into winter season and other seasons. Distribution of benthic macroinvertebrates showed some characteristics according to various influence factors; however long-term and regular investigations were thought to need analysis and prediction with various statistical methods.

  • We performed a hydrochemical study on a total of 89 bedrock groundwaters collected from preexisting wells (30 to 300 m deep) in the Boeun area. Hydrochemical data showed significant variations in the area, due to varying degrees of anthropogenic pollution. The waters were mostly enriched in Ca and HCO$_3$ but locally contained significant concentrations of anthropogenic constituents in the general order of Cl >NO$_3$>SO$_4$. In particular, about 11% of the examined wells exceeded the drinking water standard with respect to nitrate. We consider that aquifers in the area are locally highly susceptible to the contamination related to agricultural activities. Diagrams showing the relationships between the summation of cations (∑cations) and the concentration of several anions with different origin (natural versus anthropogenic) were used to estimate the relative role of anthropogenic contamination. A good correlation was observed for the relationship between ∑cations and bicarbonate, indicating that water-rock interaction (namely, hydrolysis of silicate minerals) is most important to control the water quality. Thus, we made an assumption that the equivalent of dissolved cations for a water should be equal to the alkalinity, if the chemistry were controlled solely by a set of natural weathering reactions. If we excluded the equivalent quantities of cations and bicarbonate (natural origin) from the acquired data for each sample, the remainder therefore could be considered to reflect the degree of anthropogenic contamination. Finally, we performed a multiple regression approach for hydrochemical data using the ∑cations as a dependent variable and the concentration data of each anion (natural or anthropogenic) as an independent variable. Using this approach, we could estimate the relative roles of anthropogenic and natural processes. Rather than the conventional evaluation scheme based on water quality criteria, this approach will be more useful and reasonable for the evaluation of groundwater quality in a specific region and also can be used for planning appropriate protection and remedial actions.

  • BOD and COD are currently used for water quality indices, but adoption of TOC for TMDL (Total Maximum Daily Load) is being suggested. Estimation of TOC using existing BOD and COD data is very important to diagnosis water quality trend when TOC is used for water quality index of organic matter in the future. The relationships between BOD COD and TOC in runoff from paddy fields were investigated during 2008-2011. The observed mean concentration of EMCs (Event Mean Concentration) for BOD, COD, TOC were 3.87, 10.97, 7.26 mg/L respectively. The correlation coefficients between BOD-TOC and COD-TOC were 0.42, 0.73, respectively. The coefficient of determination of regression equation for BOD-TOC and COD-TOC were 0.18, 0.53 respectively. Even though, conversion of COD data to TOC seems to be rather reliable than that of BOD-TOC, further monitoring is recommended to ensure better interpretation of relationship among BOD, COD and TOC.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the nutritional status of Lake Jinyang using Landsat 8 satellite image band correlated with chlorophyll-a, which is also related to algae proliferation. We selected 20 Landsat 8 images dating from 2013 to 2017, taken close to water quality measurement date when the cloud cover was less than 20 %. Based on the results of the previous studies, analyzing the correlation between chlorophyll-a, and Landsat 8 satellite image band, we selected near infrared wavelength, band 5 which is closely related to the population of algae. The nutritional status was classified using the Aizaki trophic state index (TSIm). The results of the regression equation between band 5 and the observed chlorophyll-a data was used to calculate chlorophyll-a for the image data from 2013 to 2017. The concentration of chlorophyll-a ranged from 3 to $16.1mg/m^3$. To illustrate the spatial distribution of chlorophyll-a within the lake, the chlorophyll-a concentration was divided into five grades. The images on October 14, 2014 and April 10, 2016 showed relatively high value of chlorophyll-a, while January 18, 2015 and December 6, 2016 chlorophyll-a value were below 5. The images on October 14, 2014 and April 10, 2016 were rated as eutrophic status in most areas. The results of simulating water quality for the day when the water quality was not measured resulted to an approximate value for the Panmun station while the Naedong station needed some corrections.

  • For the purpose of finding out the distributions of groundwater uses, the effect of facilities on the parameter and the correlations among measurements, various statistical analysis were carried out with the data of groundwater quality measurements from January to December in 2002. (1) The rates of groundwater for drinking water were 10.5% in Yungcheon-Gu, 10.2% in Kangdong-Gu, and 9.9% in Eunpyung-Gu. The rates of other uses of groundwater were shown to be 58.1 %(786 wells) for civil defense emergency, 22.1% (299 wells) for contamination-concerning, 9.8%(133 wells) for water quality monitoring, consisting of 90% of all groundwater. (2) The 52.6% of groundwater for drinking were demonstrated to be appropriate while 91.9% for other uses-domestic, industrial, agricultural uses- were shown to be proper. (3) For drinking water, the maximum values of colar, turbidity, NH3-N, F, and Fe were 766.9 degree, 69.16NTU, 860.0 mg/l, 5.6 mg/l and 49.87 mg/l respectively. (4) Comparision of skewness and kurtosis for Seoul groundwater, pH was found to be 0.022 and -0.524, but the T.colony, color, turbidity, NH$_3$-N, NO$_3$-N, Fe and Mn respectively fumed out to be 11.641 and 174.324, 8.501 and 80.260, 5.675 and 32.821, 19.507 and 380.994, 3.323 and 17.436, 10.544 and 134.093 and 5.979 and 39.124. (5) In cases of drinking water wells for emergency, the results of statistical analysis showed that building year of the wells, depth and pumping rate didn't affect on whether it was proper for that use or not. It were shown that there were linear correlations between depth and NO3-N(-0.171) and F(0.332) while the correlation coefficients were 0.381 and -0.169 between the building year of well and depth and pumping rate respectively.

  • For monitoring the fecal pollution at Nak-Dong River, one of the eutrophicated rivers, the differences between total coliforms (TC) and fecal coliforms (FC) using both of membrane filtration (MF)/MPN method, and also fecal streptococcus (FS) by MF-method was investigated. To evaluate the correlation between TC, FC, and FS statistical analyses were performed by using Minitab. And a part of the presumptive TC/FC and background colonies was purified and identified using API 20E kit (Biomeriux). As results, most (89%) of presumptive FC by MF was identified as Escherichia coli while only 14% (MPN) and 11% (MF) of TC were identified as E. coli. Furthermore, FC by MF was correlated significantly with other fecal indicators (TC/FS by MF and FC by MPN), while TC by MPN was not correlated with any other indicators. Thus, the detection of FC by MF-method may be the most reasonable for monitoring the fecal pollution.
