  • In the present study, we investigated the effects of artificial removal of corolla and calyx lobes from open flowers on fruit development and fruit quality of strawberry (Fragaria ${\times}$ ananassa Duch.). Removing the corolla had no significant effect on fruit weight, hardness, length, and diameter, Hunter L, a, b values, sugar content and acidity. However, removing the calyx lobes significantly inhibited longitudinal and transverse growth of the fruits, resulting in diminished fruit size. In addition, merchantable fruit quality significantly decreased upon removing the calyx lobes, and this tendency was increased as more calyx lobes were removed. Nonetheless, removal of the calyx lobes had no effects on fruit color, sugar content, or acidity, similar to the effect of corolla removal.

  • We examined the floral morphology of 15 taxa of five genera (Cynanchum, Marsdenia, Metaplexis, Tylophora, and Vincetoxicum) in Korean Asclepiadoideae using a stereoscopic and scanning electronic microscope to clarify and describe the floral characteristics. In this study, the corolla and corona types, the types of corona lobes, appendages on the corona lobes, and the apex shape of the style head are considered as diagnostic characteristics at the generic level. The genus Vincetoxicum, which is treated as a synonym of the genus Cynanchum in Korea, is distinguished from Cynanchum by the interstaminal part on the corona, fleshy and mainly triangular or ellipsoid corona lobes, and various corolla colors. In Cynanchum, various corona types have been observed, while Vincetoxicum have similar corona types among the taxa. In addition, the main floral characteristics at the species level were as follows: flowering time, inflorescence, corolla color, trichomes on the corolla surfaces, apex shape of the corona lobe, and trichomes on the ovary. This study presents the taxonomic importance of floral morphology by providing descriptions and diagnostic characteristics among the genera and species investigated.

  • Morphological reinvestigation, external characters and discriminant functional analysis(44 qualitative characters) were examined on 6 taxa of Korean Ophelia, including 5 taxa distributed in south Korea, and one taxon considered to be the variation type of Ophelia wilfordi in order to clarify the limit of intersection and interspecies. And to establish the taxonomic position. One taxon distributed in north Korea was included in the description of species by observation of herbarium specimen of the University of Tokyo in Japan. The two sections were successfully distinguished by internal structure of ovary, morphology of nectary, number of corolla lobe and calyx lobe, and species were also distinguished by morphology of cauline leaf, and color and spot of corolla, respectively. The variation type of Ophelia wilfordi was not distinguished with other species except for absent or present of purple spot in corolla lobe. The results of the discriminal functional analysis indicated that characters of corolla were the most important qualitative characters to distinguish the Ophelia taxa, and morphology of seed and seed coat was useful characters to distinguish taxa higher than species. Therefore the difficult problems of identification of species were successfully solved, and the taxonomic position in intrageneric level was clarified on Korean Ophelia.

  • The morphological characteristics of the Korean Scopolia japonica Maxim., commonly known as 'Mi-chi-gwang-i-pul' in Korean, were re-evaluated in comparison with results from previous research, while the distribution map was formulated according to existing flora and voucher specimens. The result of the re-evaluation has shown that there are some distinctive discrepancies compared to the previous reports of some characteristics such as the color of the basal stem, numbers of lateral veins, apex shape of calyx and corolla including the color of corolla. The Korean Scopolia japonica Maxim is found throughout Korea except Jeju-do province. The intra-specific species such as S. parviflora (Dunn.) Nakai, S. lutescens Y.N. Lee and S. kwangdokensis Y.N. Lee were treated as synonyms of S. japonica Maxim. in this research.

  • Nerium indicum has adaxial colleters on each petiole, bract, bracteole, calyx and corolla. The colleters are finger-shaped sometimes lobed structures with tall heads on short stalks. The petiolar colleters are more abundant than those on the bract, bracteole, calyx and corolla but their structure is similar. Meristematic activity in a small group of protodermal and hypodermal cells at the base of the developing leaf gives rise to the colleter that further differentiates by frequent anticlinal and periclinal divisions. Many of the colleters are vascullarized, sometimes a layer of redially elongated cells is present beneath the epithelial cells. Senescence of a colleter begins when the leaves have either completed their growth or are still expanding. In senescent colleters, the central cell cytoplasm and nuclei are considerably reduced. Thin layer chromatography of the freshly harvested exudate of colleter shows the presence of rhamnose, glucose and arabinose sugars.

  • This is a report of an unrecorded species of Hedyotis from Korea, Hedyotis chrysotricha (Palib.) Merr., found in Yeongam-gun, Jeollanam-do. The species can be distinguished from other Hedyotis species by trichomes that cover the entire plant, ovate leaves, mauve or white corolla, and the corolla lobe of which the length measures more than twice its width. The species was named after its findspot and is hence called 'Yeongam-pul.' An illustration, description and key to the taxa related to Hedyotis are provided.

  • Two Unrecorded species from Jeju Province are reported: Maesa japonica of Maesaceae which is unrecorded family and Cardamine tanakae of Brassicaceae. Monotypic family Maesaceae, is distinguished from Myrsinaceae and Primulaceae by having pedicels with a pair of bracteoles, flowers without staminodia, semi-inferior ovary and indehiscent fruits with many seeds. M. japonica is readily distinguishable from M. salicifolia in China and M. montana var. formosana in Taiwan and Japan by shapes of blades, corolla and bracteoles, the presence/absence of serrulation of leaf margins, ratio of length of corolla tube and corolla lobes, feature and color of fruit surface. C. tanakae is most similar to Korean endemic C. glechomifolia in morphology, however, the two taxa are readily distinguishable by the number of leaflets of cauline leaves, size of terminal leaflets, number of flowers per inflorescence, the presence of whitish hairs on ovary and fruits.

  • Background and objective: Native to the limestone zones of the Korean Peninsula, Zabelia tyaihyonii is a popular plant for landscaping. As it is now classified as a rare species, the conservation of its genetic resources is necessary. Methods: In this study, which aimed to understand the morphological variation of Z. tyaihyonii, 18 characteristics of Z. tyaihyonii from five habitats were examined. Results: Of these 18 characteristics, 16 characteristics showed significant differences among sites, and the coefficient of variation ranged from 5.4% (for corolla lobe number) to 31.3% (for flower number). Notable variations were observed in the size of flower and calyx lobe. When the corolla length and calyx lobe length were used as the classification key of Z. tyaihyonii, the sites were divided into those with small, intermediate, and large values. Hair was observed on the filament of all samples, a finding which conflicts with an earlier report. Rather than classifying Z. tyaihyonii into different species on the basis of corolla length (COL) and calyx lobe length (CALL) values, we recommend modifying the species description to incorporate the variation in these characteristics of interest. Principal component analysis results showed that the first main component was highly correlated with the traits related to the size of the calyx lobe (length: 0.819, width: 0.758), and the second main component was highly correlated with the traits related with the size of the inflorescence (length: 0.790, width: 0.626). Conclusion: Several notable variations were identified among the characteristics related to inflorescence and calyx lobe. There is little genetic exchange among groups, or each group is influenced by micro environmental factors, because sites that are located nearby. In addition, the difference between COL and CALL, which is used as the classification key for Z. tyaihyonii, was divided into small group, large group, and intermediate group, regardless of the sites' geographical distance.

  • External and anatomical characters such as stem, leaf, ovary, calyx lobe, ultrastructure of stigma epidermis of leaf blade and midvein, corolla lobe, seed coat and pollen were examined on Pterygocalyx volubilis and Tripterospermum japonicum of Korean Gentianaceae. Fruit characters(capsule and berry), absent or not of corona and pollen characters(reticulate and striate) has been used by identification characters of two taxa. But study results, external characters(root, leaf, calyx lobe, stigma, anther), internal characters(calyx love, ovary) and ultrastructure characters(epidermis o leaf blade and midvein, corolla lobe, seed coat) were useful for species identification. Taxonomic relationships among problematic taxa were discussed.
