A numerical study of fluid flow in driven cavity was carried out using singular finite element method. The driven cavity problem is known to have infinite velocity gradients as well as dual velocity conditions at the singular points. To overcome such difficulties, a finite element method with singular shape functions was used and a special technique was employed to allow multiple values of velocities at the singular points. Application of singular elements in the driven cavity problem has a significant influence on the stability of solution. It was found the singular elements gave a stable solution, especially, for the pressure distribution of the entire flow field by keeping up a large pressure at the singular points. In the existing solutions of driven cavity problem, most efforts were focused on the study of streamlines and vorticities, and pressure were seldom mentioned. In this study, however, more attention was given to the pressure distribution. Computations showed that pressure decreased very rapidly as the distance from the singular point increased. Also, the pressure distribution along the vertical walls showed a smoother transition with singular elements compared to those of conventional method. At the singular point toward the flow direction showed more pressure increase compared with the other side as Reynolds number increased.

Time-dependent Flow characteristics of a two-dimensional lid-driven square cavity flow of six high Reynolds numbers, $10^4 2{\times}lO^4., 3{\times}l0^4, 5{\times}lO^4, 7.5{\times}lO^4$ and $10^5$ were investigated. A convection conservative difference scheme based upon SOLA to maintain the nearly 2nd-order spatial accuracy was adopted on irregular grid formation. Irregular grid number is $80{\times}80$ and its minimum size is about 1/400 of the cavity height(H) and its maximum is about 1/53 H. The result shows that at Re= $10^4$, periodic migration of small eddies appearing in corner separation region and its temporal sinusoidal fluctuation are represented. And another critical Reynolds number which shows the commencement of flow randomness emerging from the periodic fluctuation is assumed to be around Re= $1.5{\times}10$. At five higher Reynolds numbers ($2{\times}lO^4., 3{\times}l0^4, 5{\times}lO^4, 7.5{\times}lO^4$ and $10^5$), an organizing structure of four consecutive vortices similar to a Moffat vortex at two lower corners is revealed from time-mean flow patterns.

As mechanical components require size minimization and high precision, micro die machining technology has been developed in many fields. to machine a micro die by EDM, sometimes, a polygonal electrode is use. Machining corners by MEDM shows special characteristics. Physically, electrons are concentrated in sharp region and a high potential level is established in this region. Also, the electrode can't be rotated when machining a polygonal cavity, and machined debris can not drawn off easily. Discharge concentration in corners and 2nd discharge by machined debris result in distortion of corner shape. This phenomena can be improved by shaking the electrode. This method is also shown to be effective in improving surface roughness by circulation of machining fluid resulting from movement of the electrode.

In this paper backward extrusion process with lower die rotation was studied to improve the conventional backward extrusion problems ; requirement of large forming machine, the difficulty to selecting of die material caused by high surface pressure, high cost of forming machine caused by improvement of noise and vibration, and etc. In this experiment, model material, plasticine, was used of specimen. The result values of torsional and conventional backward extrusions were analyzed and compared. FE-simulation is used for analysis with DEFPRM-3D. These results show that the torsional backward extrusion is very useful process because this process can obtain the homogeneous deformation, low forming load. Decreasing forming load improves die life and makes it possible to use press of relatively low capacity. Also this process can reduce corner cavity, improve the initial cast-structure, owing to the high deformation and uniform starin distribution.
We have introduced a new version of the 3-D lid-driven cavity problem that leads to more complicated fluid parcel trajectories and thus, enhanced mixing, but at the same time weakens corner singularities. We employed an advanced form of LES to solve this problem and presented preliminary results that show very complicated streamline structures on both large and small scales, despite a relatively low Reynolds number. Finally, we demonstrated moderate speedups via parallelization. Ongoing tests are expected to resolve the questions raised regarding possible sources of the rather poor parallel performance compared with that seen in earlier studies with the same code. Because it is expected that findings may be significant for parallel performance in general, we plan to emphasize this aspect in the oral presentation the Parrel (CFD 2006 Conference.

Topological photonic nanocavities are considered to possess outstanding optical performance, and provide new platforms for realizing strong interaction between light and matter, due to their robustness to impurities and defects. Here hybrid plasmonic topological photonic nanocavities are proposed, by embedding various plasmon nanoantennas such as gold nanospheres, cylinders, and rectangles in a topological photonic crystal corner-state nanocavity. The maximum quality factor Q and minimum effective mode volume Veff of these hybrid nanocavities can reach the order of 104 and 10-4 (𝜆/n)3 respectively, and the high figures of merit Q/Veff for all of these hybrid nanocavites are stable and on the order of 105 (𝜆/n)-3. The relative positions of the plasmon nanoantennas will influence the coupling strength between the plasmon structures and the topological nanocavity. The hybrid nanocavity with gold nanospheres possesses much higher Q, but relatively large Veff. The presence of a gold rectangular structure can confine more electromagnetic energy within a smaller space, since its Veff is smallest, although Q is lowest among these structures. This work provides an outstanding platform for cavity quantum electrodynamics and has a wide range of applications in topological quantum light sources, such as single-photon sources and nanolasers.

Modular systems are widely used in various building types including housing, dormitory, and barracks. Steel studs have many advantages over other materials as construction components of modular buildings in terms of seismic performance, durability and maintenance. However, steel stud modular systems also have weakness in condensation resistance due to high thermal conductivity of steel. The purpose of this study is to investigate the condensation resistance of steel stud wall corner details in modular buildings by thermal simulation. The condensation resistance was evaluated by temperature difference ratio according to ISO 13788. The result showed that there was little difference between the alternatives of adding cavity and insulation. Separation of interstitial steel studs showed outstanding effect on the improvement of temperature difference ratio.

This paper proposes a measurement method of the complex relative permittivity of semi-solid materials using a new cavity structure. Semi-solid materials are positioned in the proposed cavity where an aperture exists on each corner of the upper part and a ground plane is separated. In order to show the validation of the proposed method, we measured the complex relative permittivity of distilled water and 0.9 % saline by sensing a shift of resonant frequency and using Critical-Points Method, and compared the results with those derived from the Cole-Cole equation.
When a severe disaster such as a building collapse occurs, a first priority for rapid rescue is to find a location where people are highly expected to be buried but alive. It is, however, very difficult to correctly designate the location of such cavities by conventional geophysical survey due to a pile of debris of building members. In this study, location of possible lifeguard cavities were evaluated through a series of simulations of building collapse by explosion depending on the height of the building, a structure of basement floor and a location of explosion. Three types of building structure: five-story, ten-story and fifteen-story were prepared as a model for the simulation. As a results, in the case of low building, only basement floor partially collapsed. On the other hand, in the case of high building, a collapsed range on the inside of the building increased and lifeguard spaces were formed only in the lateral side or corner of the building. In addition, when a wall exists in the basement floor, the possibility that cavities could be formed increased compared to the cases without wall. However, for the fifteen-story building case, no possible lifeguard cavity was found. It is noted that for a high rise building, the height of building more affect forming of safeguard cavity than the structure of the basement floor.
LNG Carriers are currently known as sole commercial means of shipping natural gas on the sea. They are designed to proven dangerous explosion for shipping a lot of gas over long distance. In this study. In this study, a scaled model chamber was made to investigate ventilation characteristics of the hood room in LNG carrier. Experimental study was performed in model using visualization equipments with laser apparatus and image intensifier CCD camera gated by an AOM controller Twelve different kinds of measuring area were selected as experimental condition. Instant simultaneous velocity vectors at whole field were measured by using 2-D PIV system which software adopts two-frame grey-level cross correlation algorithm. To look into stagnation area of hood room for LNG carrier, a three-dimensional numerical simulation with standard ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ model was carried out by using PHOENICS for three kinds of Reynolds number, $6.5{\times}10^3$, $9.7{\times}10^3\;and\;1.29{\times}10^4$, based on the cavity inlet velocity and cavity height. The flow pattern showed the large scale counter-clockwise forced-vortex rotated at center area, small eddies at each corner and stagnation area located at left-back upper side of model.
