  • Growth duration and grain and silage yields of corn was studied at eight planting dates. Yield of com was similar among planting dates upto April 25 for grain and May 10 for silage, but it decreased as planting date was delayed after the critical planting date. The number of days from planting to silking varied from 108 to 52 days according to planting dates, but growing degree days (GDD) from planting to silking was similar regardless planting dates. Both the number of days and GDD from silking to physiological maturity was similar among the planting dates when corn was planted before the above critical planting dates. However, when corn was planted later than the critical planting dates, the number of days from silking to maturity was extended as planting was delayed although GDD was similar among the planting dates.

  • Objective: The objective of this study was to investigate how cellulase or/and lactic acid bacteria (LAB) affected the fermentation characteristic and microbial community in wet brewer's grains (WBG) and corn stover (CS) mixed silage. Methods: The WBG was mixed thoroughly with the CS at 7:3 (w/w). Four treatment groups were studied: i) CON, no additives; ii) CEL, added cellulase (120 U/g fresh matter [FM]), iii) LAB, added LAB (2×106 cfu/g FM), and iv) CLA, added cellulase (120 U/g FM) and LAB (2×106 cfu/g FM). Results: All additive-treated groups showed higher fermentation quality over the 30 d ensiling period. As these groups exhibited higher (p<0.05) LAB counts and lactic acid (LA) content, along with lower pH value and ammonia-nitrogen (NH3-N) content than the control. Specifically, cellulase-treated groups (CEL and CLA) showed lower (p<0.05) neutral detergent fiber and acid detergent fiber contents than other groups. All additives increased the abundance of beneficial bacteria (Firmicutes, Lactiplantibacillus, and Limosilactobacillus) while they decreased abundance of Proteobacteria and microbial diversity as well. Conclusion: The combined application of cellulase and LAB could effectively improve the fermentation quality and microbial community of the WBG and CS mixed silage.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the physicochemical characteristics of corn silks. Pollination of corn silks was finished within three days after silking, and elongation of open pollinated corn silks was stopped, but unpollinated silks elongated until eight days after silking. Moisture contents of corn silks were about 92-94% at silking stage, but continuously decreased. these were about 70-75% at 30 days after silking. Chlorophyll b was higher than chlorophyll a in corn silks, and chlorophyll a/b ratios of four hybrids were high in this order : silage > sweet > super sweet > waxy corn. Free sugars in corn silks were mainly fructose, glucose and maltose. Their composition rate was 55% of glucose, 42% of fructose and 4% of maltose. Water soluble solid (Brix %) contents of unpollinated corn silks were ranged from 13.7 to 16.8 Brix % and pollinated corn silks were from 12.6 to 13.7 Brix %. Phytic, oxalic, malic. shikimic, glutaric and acetic acid were detected on corn silks. Phytic, oxalic and glutaric acid were considered as a major organic acids in corn silks. Amino acids in corn silks were high in this order : waxy > silage > sweet >sweet corn. Serine, glycine and thereoine were contained more than 10%, and five amino acids such as aspartic, glutaric, arginine, alanine and proline were ranged about 5 to 8%. Methionine and cystine, amino acids containing sulfur were contained only small quantity as about 2.1% and 1.3%, respectively. Acetaldehyde, ethanol, acetone, DMS, isobutylaldehyde, cis-3-hexanol, 3-hexe-1-ol, acetate, trans-2-hexanol and pentanol were detected as the volatile components in corn silks, but acetaldehyde and DMS were major volitiles in silage corn silks, and acetaldehyde, ethanol and DMS were major volitiles in waxy corn silks. The length of corn silks was a positively correlated with organic acids (r=${0.556}^*$), and a negatively correlated with amino acids (r=${-0.514}^*$), respectively. Free sugars were positively correlated with all characteristics tested and significantly correlated with organic acid (r=TEX>${0.703}^{**}$), and flavonoids (r=TEX>${0.544}^*$). Chlorophyll was significantly correlated with flavonoid contents (r=TEX>${0.523}^*$). For this reason chlorophyll was evaluated as an indirect selection character for the high flavonoid containing varieties.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of the types and rates of application of animal manure on productivity of silage corn and environmental pollution in silage corn cultivation soil. The experiment was confirmed in lysimeter which was constructed with 0.30m diameter, and 1 m depth. This study was arranged in split plot design. Main plots were the types of cattle slurry (CS), swine manure fermented with sawdust (SMFS) and chemical fertilizer (CF), Subplots were the application rates of animal manure, as urea, such as 100, 200 and 400 kg N $ha^{-1}$. Dry matter(DM) and nitrogen yields of silage corn enhanced as increased application rates of CS, SMFS and CF (p<0.05). DM yield reveals that there is an decrease in order of CF>CS>SMFS (p<0.05). Crude protein (CP) contents of the whole silage corn increased as increased application rates of CS, SMFS and CF. IN addition, $NO_{3^-}N$ content in leaching water by application of animal manure reveals that there is an decrease in order SMFS>CF>CS (p<0.05). However, $NH_{4^-}N$ content was hardly influenced by application of animal manure, and $NH_{4^-}N$ content increased with application rates increased. $PO_{4^-}P$ content in leaching water by application of animal manure reveals that there is an decrease in order of SMFS>CF>CS. $PO_{4^-}P$ increased as increasing application rates (p<0.05), whereas $PO_{4^-}P$ in leaching water maintained a low levels.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of the application rate of fermented swine manure and additional mineral fertilizer on productivity and nutritive value of corn(Zea mays L.) for silage. Swine manures used in this study were the compost of swine manure fermented with sawdust(SMFWS) and swine sluny(SS). This study was arranged in split-split plot design. Main plots were the types of swine manure, subplots were the application rate of swine manure, such as 100, 200 and 400kgN/ha, and sub-subplots were the application rate of mineral fertilizer, such as 50 and 100kgNiha. Corn DM(dry matter) and TDN(tota1 digestible nutrient) yields increased as application rate of SMFWS and SS increased. DM and TDN yields in SS treatments were higher than those in SMFWS treatments. The effect of fermented swine manure improved positively as application rate of urea increased. Net energy for lactation(NE1) and TDN content in corn decreased as application rate of SMFWS and SS increased, but crude protein(CP) content increased by the application of SMFWS and SS. NE, and TDN contents in SMFWS treatments were lower than those in SS treatments, but CP content in SMFWS was higher than that in SS. The growth and nutritive value of corn were improved by the application of mineral fertilizer. (Key words : Swine manure, Swine sluury, Compost, Zea may, TDN, Net energy)

  • The agronomic performance of four introduced corn(Zea mays L.) hybrids and a domestic hybrid Suwon 19(control) was compared for silage production in the Middle Northwestern Coast(MNWC). Middle Southwestern Coast(MSWC) and Middle Northern Inland(MN1) regions of Korea, 1988 to 19 90. In the MNWC region, DK713 and P3144W were recorded as more resistant corn hybrids to rice black streaked dwarf virus(RBSDV) than other hybrids. P3144W, P3352 and DK689 hybrids produced higher dry matter(DM) and total digestible nutrient(TDN) than the control hybrid Suwon 19 and DK 713. In the MSWC region, P3144W and DK689 tended to yield more DM and TDN than other hybrids and a severe infection of RBSDV was observed during 3 years of experiment. In the MNI region, P3144W and P3352 corn hybrids showed higher ear and dry matter percentage and gave the highest DM and TDN yield compared with other hybrids. The RBSDV infection of the hybrids in the MNI region was moderate level compared with the two regions, but rate of stay green was the lowest. In the three regions, the control hybrid Suwon 19 gave the highest RBSDV infection, followed by P 3352, DK689, and P3144W, while DK713 was the lowest. P3144W and P3352 hybrids gave higher DM and ear percentages than all other hybrids at harvest. During 3 years of experiment, it was found that there were regional and year differences in RBSDV infection, forage DM yield, DM percentage and ear ratio to total DM yield of the corn hybrids.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the growth characteristics, yield, and chemical compositions of corn hybrids for silage according to the drainage depths in a lowland paddy field. The experimental design was arranged in a randomized block design with four treatments and three replications. The drainage depths of the four treatments were 0 cm, 20 cm, 30 cm and 50 cm. Tip-filling degree, ear length, and ear circle were higher in the 30 cm and 50 cm treatments compared with the other treatments (p < 0.05); but the plant length, leaf length, leaf width, ear height, stem diameter, and stem hardness were not significantly different (p < 0.05). The brix was higher in the order of 20 cm > 0 cm > 50 cm > 30 cm treatment. The fresh yield, dry matter yield, and TDN yield increased as the drainage depth increased (p < 0.05). The crude-protein and crude-ash content were highest in the 50 cm treatment (p < 0.05), but the crude-fat, NDF, ADF, and crude-fiber levels were not significantly different (p < 0.05). The total mineral content was higher in the order of 0 cm > 30 cm > 20 cm > 50 cm treatment (p < 0.05). Fructose, glucose, and sucrose were highest in the 20 cm treatment. The total amino-acid (EAA + NEAA) content was the highest in the 50 cm treatment. Based on these results, greater drainage depths increased the yield and feed value of silage corn.

  • Twenty four Hanwoo bulls(mean initial body weight 162$\pm$8.1kg) were employed to induce the regression equations on body weight gain and dry matter intake. The diets were fed in a 3${\times}$4 factorial arrangement; three roughage sources(rice straw, hay, corn silage) and four roughage ratios in ration(100, 60, 40, 20%). Bulls were alloted by incomplete turn over design with four replications. Daily body weight gain was greatest in bulls fed the corn silage as a roughage source and the 20% of roughage ratio, respectively. Bulls fed hay or corn silage only as feed kept in their body weight gain during the whole experimental period, however those fed rice straw only were in a negative body gain hereafter fatteningⅠperiod(350kg of body wt.). Dry matter intake per metabolizable body weight was decreased with increasing body weight. Dry matter intake was greatest in bulls fed the corn silage as a roughage source and the 20% of roughage ratio, respectively. The regression equations on daily body weight gain(DG, kg) and dry matter intake(DMI, kg/day) according to body weight(BW, kg) of Hanwoo bulls were derived as follows; DG = -0.842 + 17.5DMI/$BWkg^{0.75}$ DMI = 4.125 + 0.013BW + 1.075DG - 0.045NDF where, NDF is the percentage of neutral detergent fiber in ration.

  • This study investigated the dynamics associated with prolonged ensiling and aerobic deterioration of whole crop corn (WCC) silages and total mixed ration (TMR) silages containing WCC (C-TMR silages) to clarify the differences that account for the enhanced aerobic stability of TMR silages. Laboratory-scale barrel silos were randomly opened after 7, 14, 28, and 56 d of ensiling and were subjected to analyses of fermentation quality, microbial and temperature dynamics during aerobic exposure. WCC and C-TMR silages were both well preserved and microorganisms were inhibited with prolonged ensiling, including lactic acid bacteria. Yeast were inhibited to below the detection limit of 500 cfu/g fresh matter within 28 d of ensiling. Aerobic stability of both silages was enhanced with prolonged ensiling, whereas C-TMR silages were more aerobically stable than WCC silages for the same ensiling period. Besides the high moisture content, the weak aerobic stability of WCC silage is likely attributable to the higher lactic acid content and yeast count, which result from the high water-soluble carbohydrates content in WCC. After silo opening, yeast were the first to propagate and the increase in yeast levels is greater than that of other microorganisms in silages before deterioration. Besides, increased levels of aerobic bacteria were also detected before heating of WCC silages. The temperature dynamics also indicated that yeast are closely associated with the onset of the aerobic deterioration of C-TMR silage, whereas for WCC silages, besides yeast, aerobic bacteria also function in the aerobic deterioration. Therefore, the inclusion of WCC might contribute to the survival of yeast during ensiling but not influence the role of yeast in deterioration of C-TMR silages.
