  • This paper addresses the problem of the modeling and vibration control of tapered rotating blade modeled as thin-walled beams and incorporating damping capabilities. The blade model incorporates non-classical features such as anisotropy, transverse shear, secondary warping and includes the centrifugal and Coriolis force fields. For the rotating blade system, a thorough validation and assessment. of a number of non-classical features including the taper characteristics is accomplished. The damping capabilities are provided by a system of piezoactuators bonded or embedded into the structure and spread over the entire span of the beam. Based on the converse piezoelectric effect, the piezoactuators produce a localized strain field in response to a voltage and consequently, a change of the dynamic response characteristics is induced. A velocity feedback control law relating the piezoelectrically induced transversal bending moment at the beam tip with the appropriately selected kinematical response quantity is used and thebeneficial effects upon the closed-loop dynamic characteristics of the blade are highlighted.

  • Vibration analysis of rotating blade is the main purpose of the present study. In this study, general formulation is performed for rotating shell structures including the centrifugal force, Coriolis acceleration and initial twist. Furthermore, simplified equations are derived for the case of an open cylindrical shell. Based on the concept of degenerated shell element with the Reisser-Mindlin's assumptions, the finite element method is adopted for solving the problems. In addition, it is investigated the effect of the stacking sequence of the composites on the vibration characteristics of the blade. The results are summarized for the various parameters such as the speed of rotation and pre-twist of the blade. Also, present results are compared with the previous works and experimental data.

  • The detailed heat transfer coefficient on a rotating dimpled channel were measured using the transient liquid crystal technique. The channel height to dimple diameter was 2, dimple center distance to dimple diameter was 1.5 and channel aspect ratio was 4. Tested Reynolds number based on the channel hydraulic diameter was varied from 15000 to 35000 and corresponding rotation number was ranged from 0.026 to 0.057. Results showed that the Coriolis force by rotation enhanced the heat transfer coefficient on the trailing surface. As the Reynolds number increased, i.e. rotation number decreased, the heat transfer coefficient increased and the thermal performance factor decreased.

  • Vibration analysis of rotating blade is the main purpose of this study. In the present work, general formulation is proposed to analyze the rotating shell-type structures including the effect of centrifugal force, Coriolis acceleration and initial twist. Furthermore, simplified equations are derived for the case of an open circular cylindrical shell. Based on the concept of degenerated shell element with the Reissner-Mindlin's assumptions, the finite element method is adopted for solving the governing equations. In addition, it is investigated the effect of thermal load on the vibration characteristics of pretwisted blade. Numerical results are summarized for the various parameters such as rotating speed, angle of pretwist and stacking sequence of a composite blade. Also, present results are compared with the previous works and experimental data.

  • This paper includes a study on the performance analysis of SDINS by a simulator using Matlab/Simulink. The performance model is considered gravity and Coriolis force, and a barometer is included to damp down diversity of a perpendicular axis error. Using the simulator, the performance included gyro sensor errors was analyzed in various maneuvering patterns. Also, the performance is virtually presented for the variation of error parameters of gyro and accelerometer under GUI.

  • The detailed heat transfer coefficients on a rotating dimpled channel were measured by the hue detection based the transient liquid crystal technique. The dimples were fabricated on the one side of the channel and the tested channel aspect ratio was 4, 6, and 12 with fixed channel width. Tested Reynolds number based on the channel hydraulic diameter was varied from 21,000 to 47,000. A stationary case and two different rotating conditions were tested so that the dimple fabricated surface became leading or trailing surface. For all rotating conditions, the minimum averaged heat transfer coefficient was measured for the channel aspect ratio of 6. Generally, the highest averaged heat transfer coefficient was observed for the highest aspect ratio cases due to increased dimple induced vortex strength.

  • The main purpose of this study is the vibration suppression of rotating composite blade containing distributed piezoelectric sensors and actuators. The blade is modeled by thin-walled, single cell composite beam including the warping function, centrifugal force, Coriolis acceleration and piezoelectric effect. Further, the numerical study is performed m ing finite element method. The vibration of composite rotor is suppressed by piezocomposite actuators and PVDF sensors that are embedded between composite layers. A velocity feedback control algorithm coupling the direct and converse piezoelectric effect is used to actively control the' dynamic response of an integrated structure through a closed control loop. Responses of the rotating blade are investigated. Newmark time integration method is used to calculate the time response of the model. In the numerical simulation, the effect of parameters such as rotating speed, fiber orientation of the blade and size of actuators are studied in detail.

  • A low-Reynolds-number second moment turbulence closure is improved with the aid of DNS data. For the model coefficients of pressure-strain terms, we adopted Shima's model with some modification. Shin and Choi's new dissipation-rate equation is employed to simulate accurately the turbulence energy dissipation rate distribution in the near wall sublayer. The results of computations are compared with DNS, LES data and experimental data for turbulent plane channel flow with rotation about spanwise axis. The present second moment closure achieves a level of agreement similar to that for the non-rotating. In particular, it accurately captures the distribution of turbulence energy dissipation rate in the near wall region.

  • A vibrating angular rate sensor with tuning fork type resonator of microstructure (940*820 .mu. m$^{2}$) was designed and will be fabricated by polysilicon surface micromaching. The angular rate sensor is driven in a lateral direction by electrostatic force of comb drive electrodes, and vertical vibrations of the sensor, thich is detected capacitively, are produced by Coriolis forces due to an external angular rate. Mechanical Q factors and a difference between the frequencies of the two resonant modes, the driving mode and detecting mode, play a great role in increasing the sensitivity of the sensor. To be a highly sensitive sensor, it was designed to have as small frequency discrepancy of the two resonant modes as possible. Finite element method was used for the modal analysis. Several design parameters were selected and their contributions to the modal frequencies were investigated. A method was presented for tuning the detecting mode frequency by DC bias on the drive electrodes.
