  • Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling of large-scale coal-fired boilers requires a complicated set of flow, heat transfer and combustion process models based on different degrees of simplification. This study investigates the influence of coal devolatilization, char conversion and turbulent gas reaction models in CFD for a tangential-firing boiler at 500MWe capacity. Devolatilization model is found out not significant on the overall results, when the kinetic rates and the composition of volatiles were varied. In contrast, the turbulence mixing rate influenced significantly on the gas reaction rates, temperature, and heat transfer rate on the wall. The influence of char conversion by the unreacted core shrinking model (UCSM) and the 1st-order global rate model was not significant, but the unburned carbon concentration was predicted in details by the UCSM. Overall, the effects of the selected models were found similar with previous study for a wall-firing boiler.

  • Recently, it is exceedingly required to produce metal powders with tailored shape and phase altogether in order to fabricate high performance functional parts such as magnetic core or electro-magnetic noise suppressor for high frequency usage. Therefore, the collision phenomena of in-flight droplets against chamber wall or neighboring in-flight droplets each other is investigated by a computational method in order to get useful information about how to design the atomizing system and how to tailor process parameters not to make irregular-shaped powders during gas atomization process. As a results, smaller powders, lower melt temperature are known to be favorable for droplets not to collide against chamber wall. In additions, powders of narrower size distribution range, lower droplet generation rate, lower melt temperature, lower gas velocity are desirable to prevent droplet-collisions against neighboring in-flight droplets.

  • Seismic codes are the best available guidance on how structures should be designed and constructed to ensure adequate resistance to seismic forces during earthquakes. Seismic provisions of Indian standard code, International building code and European code are applied for buildings with ordinary moment resisting frames and reinforced shear walls at various locations considering the effect of site soil conditions. The study investigates the differences in spectral acceleration coefficient ($S_a/g$), base shear and storey shear obtained following the seismic provisions in different codes in the analysis of these buildings. Study shows that the provision of shear walls at core in low rise buildings and at all the four corners in high rise buildings gives the least value of base shear.

  • Excavation of underground openings changes stress distribution around the opening. The survey of this disturbed zone in excavation is very important to design and construct underground facilities, such as tunnel, gas and oil storage, power plant and disposal site of high- and low-level radioactive wastes. This paper presents a zoning of rock masses with tunnel excavation using PS logging. Compressional and shear wave velocities are measured in boreholes drilled in the tunnel wall, which was constructed with blasting and/or machine excavation. The disturbed zone in excavation can be estimated by comparing PS logging data with a tomographic image of compressional wave velocity and compressional and shear wave velocities of core samples. In the side wall of tunnel, the disturbed zone reaches 1.5 m and 1.0 m in thickness for blocks of blasting and machine excavations, respectively. In the roof of tunnel, however, the disturbed zone is 1.0 m and 0.75 m thick for the two blocks. These results show that the width of the disturbed zone is larger in the side wall of tunnel than in the roof, and 1.3 to 1.5 times larger for the blasting excavation than for the machine excavation.

  • Existing shear wall system may cause ductility fallen to the structure which it is on because relatively weak concrete core would easy to be damaged. In this study, steel hysteresis dampers whose stiffness is higher than existing coupling beam and whose strength is easy to change depending on design load was used in coupling beam. The steel hysteresis damper was proposed for the shape connected in double in series, from this, several static test were conducted to verify structural performance of the damper. FEM analysis was also performed, then design equation were suggested.

  • This paper aims at searching the attentiveness and method in planning. design and construction procedure of the container house system where container is used as core framework. For this. we try to produce researching fundamental materials for the construction performance and design standards of steel house, and finish the sample exterior wall system of the container house. By applying this sample system to the two case study of container housing construction we find out that there are considerable efnciency of the cost saving and catch up schedule compared with existing brick housing construction system. This study is significant in that it shows future direction of technical development and investment on the prefabricate housing market through development of the prefabricated container housing system.

  • For a double-walled carbon nanotube resonator with a short outer nanotube, the free edge of the short outer wall plays an important role in the vibration of the long inner nanotube. For a double-walled carbon nanotube resonator with a short inner nanotube, the short inner nanotube can be considered as a flexible core, thus, the fundamental frequency is influenced by its length. In this paper, we analysis frequency variation in ultrahigh frequency nanomechanical resonators based on double-walled carbon nanotubes with different wall length. This results will widely apply to the realization of frequency devices controlling the length of the inner or outer nanotube.

  • This paper is a numerical study concerning how the interactions between a pair of the vortices effect flow field and heat transfer. The flow field (common flow down) behind a vortex generator is modeled by the information that is available from studies on a half-delta winglet. Also, the energy equation and the Reynolds-averaged Wavier-Stokes equation for three-dimensional turbulent flows, together with a two-layer turbulence model to resolve the near-wall flow, are solved by the method of AF-ADI. The present results predict that the boundary layer is thinned in the regions where the secondary flow is directed toward the wall and thickened where it Is directed away from the wall. Although some discrepancies are observed near the center of the vortex core, the overall performance of the computational model is found to be satisfactory.

  • Alginate bead has been supplemented with various polymers to control permeability and to enhance mechanical strength. In this report, fibroin-reinforced alginate hydrogel was prepared, in which spatial localization of fibroin molecules was investigated. Confocal laser scanning microscopy revealed that fibroin molecules formed a fibrous network in the alginate-fibroin beads, which was expected to enhance mechanical strength as same as in many composite materials. Uniaxial compression test showed that fibroin-reinforced alginate beads had increased mechanical strength only after methanol treatment that caused ${\beta}$-sheet formation among fibroin molecules. Simultaneous curing and dialysis of alginate beads were carried out to remove excesscalcium but to retain fibroin in the dialysis chamber, which fabricated beads without internal fibrous fluorescent stains. Fibroin molecules were only found beneath the surface of the beads. The fibroin-diffused shell was further processed to form a thick wall after drying or was mobilizedto the centre of the bead by methanol treatment. Accordingly, the structure analyses provide processing methods of fibroin to form a wall or center clumps, which could be applied to design controlled delivery device.

  • The connection performance between cross-laminated timber (CLT) walls and support has the greatest effect on the horizontal shear strength. In this study, the horizontal shear performance of CLT walls with reinforced connection systems was evaluated. The reinforcements of metal bracket connections in the CLT connection system was made by attaching glass fiber-based reinforcement to the connection zone of a CLT core lamina. Three types of glass fiber-based reinforcement were used: glass fiber sheet (GS), glass fiber cloth (GT) and fiber cloth plastic (GTS). The horizontal shear strength of the fabricated wall specimens was compared and evaluated through monotonic and cyclic tests. The test results showed that the resistance performance of the reinforced CLT walls to a horizontal load based on a monotonic test did not improve significantly. The residual and yield strengths under the cyclic loading test were 38 and 18% higher, respectively, while the ductility ratio was 38% higher than that of the unreinforced CLT wall. The glass fiber-based reinforcement of the CLT connection showed the possibility of improving the horizontal shear strength performance under a cyclic load, and presented the research direction for the application of real-scale CLT walls.
