  • To design ship channel is one of important factors for planning and developing a port. In most case, the core factors for designing ship channel are the layout and width of dvnnel provided the net underkeel clearance is assessed as safety. In this study, Variable Bumper Area(VBA) model is applied to design and assess ship channel. This model reflects ship's principle dimension, ship domain theory, ship speed, conning officer's ship handling skill and experience and all external forces which cause leeway, set and drift and the change of ship maneuvering characteristics. Full Mission Ship Handling Simulator is used to analyze ship dynamic data according to conning officer's ship control, external forces, etc. This model uses Domain-index for assessing the efficiency and safety of the channel. The proposed model is applied to Ulsan new port plan which has a channel width of 1.5 times the length if the largest vessel, a radius if 5 times the length of the largest vessel in a curve of 57 degree centerline angle and SBM facility adjacent to the lateral edge if channel. The result of this study shows tint the width and radius of channel curve are suitable for the target ship but the difficulty of ship handling is caused by the large course change and SBM located in the vicinity if channel.

  • In order to understand the environmental impact of marine cage fish farms, we measured the vertical fluxes of particulate to the sediment, the distribution of organic carbon in core samples, sediment oxygen consumption rate (SOD), and macrobenthos with increasing distance from a fish cage in Miruk island located in Tongyong. The experiment was performed in August 2003. Measured values gradually decreased with distance, indicating that the organic matter in the sediment derived from the fish farm. The dominant macrobenthos species were Tharyx mulifilis, Lumbrineris longifolia, Sigambra tentaculata, and Capitella capitata, occupying 88% of the total population. Capirella capirata, an opportunistic polychaete species, were especially abundant between 0 to 5 m radius range. The estimated impact regions of organic matter enrichment based on sediment consilmption rates and compositions of macrobenthos were in good agreement. Most organic matter derived from the fish farm was deposited within a 10 m radius and then dispersed horizontally to nearby (at least 50 m) surface sediment. The vertical organic carbon fluxes to the sediment at the fish farm were higher by a factor of two than those outside the area. The remineralization organic carbon in the upper sediment layer was estimated to be 50% (1.07 g C m$^{-2}$ day$^{-1}$ ) at the fish farm. In contrast, outside the area, 30% (0.30 g C m$^{-2}$ day$^{-1}$ ) of organic carbon was recycled and the remaining 70% was deposited to the deep sediment layer.

  • Location detection technology (LDT) is one of the core techniques for location based service (LBS) in wireless communication for improving resource management and quality of services. The location of a mobile station (MS) is estimated using the time of arrival (TOA) technique based on three circles with centers corresponding to coordinates of three base stations (BSs) and radius corresponding to distances between MS and BSs. For accurately estimating the location of MS, three circles should meet at a point for the trilateration method, but they generally do not meet a point because the radius is increased depending on the number of time delay for estimating the distance between MS and BS and the carrier frequency. The increased three circles intersect at six points and the three intersection points among them should be generally placed close to coordinate of the location for the specific MS. In this paper, we propose the shortest distance algorithm for TOA trilateration method, to select three interior intersection points from entire six points. The proposed approach selects three intersection points with the shortest distances between coordinates of MS and intersection points and determines the averaged coordinate of the selected three points, as the location of the specific MS. We demonstrate the performance of the proposed algorithm using a typical computer simulation example.

  • To design ship channel is one of important factors for planning and developing a port. In most case, the core factors for designing ship channel are the layout and width of channel provided the net underkeel clearance is secured to be safe enough to pass. In this study, Variable Bumper Area(VBA) model is applied to design and assess ship channel. This model reflects ship's particular, ship domain theory, ship speed and mariner's ship handling skill and experience, especially external forces which cause leeway, set and drift and the change of ship maneuvering characteristics. A real time, full mission shiphandling simulator is used to analyze ship dynamic data according to mariner's ship control, external forces, ete. This model defines Domain degree and Domain-index for assessing the efficiency and safety of the channel. The proposed model is applied to Ulsan new port plan which has a channel width of 1.5 times the length of the largest vessel, a radius of 5 times the length of the largest vessel in a curve of 57 degree centerline angle and SBM facility adjacent to the lateral edge of channel. • The doping effect of Cu in the Sr-doped lanthan manganites (LSM) has been investigated in terms of structural analysis and thermal expansion coefficient (TEC). The $La_{0.8}Sr_{0.2}Mn_{1-x}Cu_xO_3$ ($0{\leq}x{\leq}0.3$) were prepared by solid state reaction method and their crystal structure and TEC were measured. A decrease in the lattice parameters and the TEC were observed with increase eu content, whereas they were decreased for x = 0.3. For $0{\leq}x{\leq}0.2$, the decrease of the lattice parameter and the TEC with increase Cu content were attributed to the reduction of ionic radius of Cu ions due to the presence of $Cu^{3+}$ ions. For x = 0.3, however, the increase was originated from the formation of oxygen vacancies due 10 the presence of $Cu^{2+}$ and $Mn^{4+}$.

  • A variable optical attenuator with a bending-sensitive fiber (BSF) that can be used in optical networks is developed. The proposed BSF consists of inner core, outer core, center dip and cladding. The proposed BSF is also very sensitive to mechanical perturbation, such as bending and pressure, making the light propagating in the BSF easily controlled and attenuated. The fabricated fiber-type variable optical attenuator using the proposed BSF (VOAFB) consisted of the BSF in a rectangular rubber ring with a fixed bend radius (BR) in a steady state. The variable optical attenuator using the proposed BSF (VOAFB) was able to attenuate the optical power by more than about -38㏈ with the gradient -88.4[㏈$.$$cm^{-1}$ /] at (1540∼1560nm) based m adjusting the mechanical pressure applied to the upper surface of the rectangular rubber ring with the bent BSF. According to the experimental results when using the proposed VOAFB, the optical power was easily controlled by adjusting mechanical pressure and produced an insertion loss of 0.68㏈, polarization loss of 0.5㏈, and return loss of less than -60㏈.

  • In the construction of high-rise buildings, bent re-bars are manually straightened to connect slabs to core-walls, which are usually cast before floor structures. During cold bending and straightening of re-bars, plastic deformation causing work hardening, Bauschinger effect and aging hardening is unavoidable. Tensile tests of coldly bent and straightened re-bars were conducted with test parameters of grade, diameter, and bend radius of re-bars as well as age between bending and straightening. Test results showed that proportional limits were lower and strain hardening occurred without yield plateaus. Inside and outside of re-bars with compression and tension deformations, respectively, during bending showed lower yield points due to Bauschinger effect and no yield plateaus due to work hardening, respectively. When re-bar grade was higher, yield point became significantly lower where Grade 400 re-bars had yield strengths lower than specified yield strength of 400 MPa. Because the surface of re-bar has higher strength than the core of re-bar, Bauschinger effect was more obvious for higher-grade re-bars. When age between bending and straightening was greater, yield strength increased and elongation decreased (i.e. embrittlement occurs). Using measured data, stress-strain relationship for straightened re-bars was developed based on Ramberg-Osgood model, which can be used to evaluate stiffness of joints when straightened re-bars are applied.

  • In this study, core technologies of a traction system on a mountain tram operating on the track of mountain road full of sharp curves and steep gradients were developed. In domestic mountain resort areas, sometimes the transportation service is not provided in winter because of ice and heavy snow on roads, so a mountain railway service independent of the climate and geographic conditions is needed. A traction system was designed taking into account of the power of a traction motor to climb the gradient of 120 ‰, which is common in domestic mountainous areas. and power transmission system was designed to consider the installation space for the traction system. In addition, a reduction gear and a propeller shaft were developed. An elastic pinion was developed and applied to the rack & pinion bogie system for steep gradient so that noise and vibration generated by contact between the steel gears could be reduced. Impact comparison tests showed that the vibration level of the elastic pinion is one-third lower than that of previous steel pinion. Independent rotating wheels and axles were developed for the bogie system to operate on the sharp curve of a 10 meter radius. In addition, the band braking system was developed to enhance the braking force during running on the steep gradient. A test for the braking force showed it exerts the required braking force. The performance of the developed core components were verified by the tests and finally they were applied to the bogie system running on the track of steep gradient and sharp curve.

  • Water, which is most abundant in Earth surface and very closely related to all forms of living organisms, has a simple molecular structure but exhibits very unique physical and chemical properties. Even though tremendous effort has been paid to understand this nature's core substance, there amazingly still lefts much room for scientist to explore its novel behaviors. Especially, as the scale goes down to nano-regime, water shows extraordinary properties that are not observable in bulk state. One of such interesting features is the formation of nanoscale bubbles showing unusual long-term stability. Nanobubbles can be spontaneously formed in water on hydrophobic surface or by decompression of gas-saturated liquid. In addition, the nanobubbles can be generated during electrochemical reaction at normal hydrogen electrode (NHE), which possibly distorts the standard reduction potential at NHE as the surface nanobubble screens the reaction with electrolyte solution. However, the real-time evolution of these nanobubbles has been hardly studied owing to the lack of proper imaging tools in liquid phase at nanoscale. Here we demonstrate, for the first time, that the behaviors of nanobubbles can be visualized by in situ transmission electron microscope (TEM), utilizing graphene as liquid cell membrane. The results indicate that there is a critical radius that determines the long-term stability of nanobubbles. In addition, we find two different pathways of nanobubble growth: i) Ostwald ripening of large and small nanobubbles and ii) coalescence of similar-sized nanobubbles. We also observe that the nucleation and growth of nanoparticles and the self-assembly of biomolecules are catalyzed at the nanobubble interface. Our finding is expected to provide a deeper insight to understand unusual chemical, biological and environmental phenomena where nanoscale gas-state is involved.

  • This study investigated the structural behavior and field applicability of sandwich type GFRP arches with polymer mortar in core. As a result, in case of crack loading and failure loading, total strains at crown were the highest; the fracture strain at crown was 0.01690, which is 4.2 times greater than the fracture strain (0.004) of cement concrete. The 3 % deflection load was 17.42 kN, the flexural strength was $163.98{\times}10^{-3}GPa$, and the flexural elastic modulus was 11.884 GPa. From load-deflection relationship up to 3.5 % deflection, 3D analysis results and experimental values were observed to be almost identical. It was considered reasonable to set a deflection rate limit to be 3 % for structural safety purpose. The standard external flexural strength of semicircular arch used in this study was approximately 2.64 times higher than that of hume pipe (2 type standard) and tripled composite pipe. The external pressure strength at fracture was approximately 1.57 times higher than that of hume pipe. It was confirmed that the implementing semicircular arch had mechanically more advantage than the circular pipe. Optimum member thickness was 8~53 mm according to arch radius of 450~1,800 mm and cover depth of 2~10 m. It was found that the larger strength could be obtained even if the thickness of member was smaller than that of concrete structure. In field application study, figures and equations were derived for obtaining applicable cover depth and optimum member thickness according to loading conditions. These would be useful data for design and manufacture of sandwich type semicircular arch.
