  • The transcription of soybean (Glycine max) calmodulin isoform-4 (GmCaM-4) is dramatically induced within 0.5 h of exposure to pathogen or NaCl. Core cis-acting elements that regulate the expression of the GmCaM-4 gene in response to pathogen and salt stress were previously identified, between -1,207 and -1,128 bp, and between -858 and -728 bp, in the GmCaM-4 promoter. Here, we characterized the properties of the DNA-binding complexes that form at the two core cis-acting elements of the GmCaM-4 promoter in pathogen-treated nuclear extracts. We generated GUS reporter constructs harboring various deletions of approximately 1.3-kb GmCaM-4 promoter, and analyzed GUS expression in tobacco plants transformed with these constructs. The GUS expression analysis suggested that the two previously identified core regions are involved in inducing GmCaM-4 expression in the heterologous system. Finally, a transient expression assay of Arabidopsis protoplasts showed that the GmCaM-4 promoter produced greater levels of GUS activity than did the CaMV35S promoter after pathogen or NaCl treatments, suggesting that the GmCaM-4 promoter may be useful in the production of conditional gene expression systems.

  • A small power reactor core of 108 MW$\_$th/ was designed with some design constraints: 2 year refueling cycle length, soluble boron free operation, low power density, and proven fuel assembly design - Uljin 3'||'&'||'4 design specifications. CASMO-3 and KINS-3 was used to evaluate operational capability for power level control via control rods. Cycle length, power peaking factor, M.T.C., and power coefficients were also checked. Designed core loaded with KOFAs satisfied all design goals. We found that much more burnable poisons are to be loaded with axial enrichment zoning. Control rod assemblies should be located at every other assemblies with more than 3 banks. Additional shutdown banks are proposed for the safe plant cooldown, which could be located at core periphery.

  • We investigated complex damped modes in beams in the presence of a viscoelastic layer sandwiched between two elastic layers. The problem was solved using two approaches, (1) Rayleigh beam theory and analyzed using the Ritz method, and (2) by using 2D plane stress elasticity based finite-element method. The damping in the layers was modeled using the complex modulus. Simply-supported, cantilever, and viscously supported boundary conditions were considered in this study. Simple trigonometric functions were used as admissible functions in the Ritz method. The key idea behind sandwich structure is to increase damping in a beam as affected by the presence of a highly-damped core layer vibrating mainly in shear. Different assumptions are utilized in the literature, to model shear deformation in the core layer. In this manuscript, we used FEM without any kinematic assumptions for the transverse shear in both the core and elastic layers. Moreover, numerical examples were studied, where the base and constraining layers were also damped. The loss factor was calculated by modal strain energy method, and by solving a complex eigenvalue problem. The efficiency of the modal strain energy method was tested for different loss factors in the core layer. Complex mode shapes of the beam were also examined in the study, and a comparison was made between viscoelastically and viscously damped structures. The numerical results were compared with those available in the literature, and the results were found to be satisfactory.

  • Epileptic Seizure is a popular brain disease in the world. It affects the nervous system and the activities of brain function that make a person who has seizure signs cannot control and predict his actions. Based on the Electroencephalography (EEG) signals which are recorded from human or animal brains, the scientists use many methods to detect and recognize the abnormal activities of brain. Tucker model is investigated to solve this problem. Tucker decomposition is known as a higher-order form of Singular Value Decomposition (SVD), a well-known algorithm for decomposing a matric. It is widely used to extract good features of a tensor. After decomposing, the result of Tucker decomposition is a core tensor and some factor matrices along each mode. This core tensor contains a number of the best information of original data. In this paper, we used Tucker decomposition as a way to obtain good features. Training data is primarily applied into the core tensor and the remained matrices will be combined with the test data to build the Tucker base that is used for testing. Using core tensor makes the process simpler and obtains higher accuracies.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the influence of hope, core beliefs, and social support on the posttraumatic growth of mothers with chronically ill children. Methods: In this study, 94 mothers who gave written consent completed the questionnaires between July 21 and July 31, 2012 when they visited a university hospital in Seoul, Korea. Data were analyzed using t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient and stepwise multiple regression. Results: Hope, core belief and social support had positive correlations with posttraumatic growth. Models including these variables explained 64.8% (F=55.276, p<.001) of the variance for posttraumatic growth. Hope (${\beta}$=.441, p<.001) was the most influential factor. Conclusion: The findings demonstrate that it is essential for nurses to mediate and facilitate posttraumatic growth of mothers caring for chronically ill children. Furthermore, there is an need to develop and implement new strategies in clinical practice that will result in improvements in posttraumatic growth.

  • The behavior of rock mass and solute(e.g. groundwater, radioactivity) flow in fractured rock can be directly influenced by joint roughness. The characteristics of joint roughness is also a main factor for the rock classification(e.g. RMR, Q system) which is usually used in tunnel design. Nevertheless, most of JRC estimation has been carried out only by the examination with the naked eye. This JRC estimation has a lack of objectivity because each investigator judges JRC by his subjective opinion. Therefore, it will be desirable that the assessment of JRC is performed by a numerical analysis which can give a quantitative value corresponding to the characteristics of a roughness curve. Meanwhile, roughness curves for joint surfaces which are observed in drill cores have been obtained only along linear profiles. Although roughness curves are measured in the same joint surface, they can frequently show diverse aspects in a standpoint of roughness characteristics. If roughness curves can be measured along the elliptical circumferences of joint surfaces from core scanning images or Televiewer images, they will certainly be more comprehensive than those measured along linear profiles for roughness characteristics of joint surfaces. This study is focus on dealing with (1) extracting automatically roughness curves from core scan image or Televiewer image, (2) improving the accuracy of quantitative assessment of JRC using fractal dimension concept.

  • This paper aimed to examine core factors of the knowledge management and analyze their effects on organizational performance (employee satisfaction and competitive advantage). To accomplish this purpose, this study examined previous studies and summarized core factors of the knowledge management as people oriented, culture oriented and system oriented. 350 questionaries were distributed to the people living in Gumi. 327 questionaries were obtained and 302 data were analyzed by frequencies, correlation and multiple regression. The results of this study are as follows; First, we conducted exploratory factor analysis about three constructs (people oriented, culture oriented and system oriented) using oblique rotation method that did not assume independence among the factors and core factors of knowledge management were grouped together by three factors. Second, it is shown that three core factors of knowledge management have a positive influence on the employee satisfaction and competition (p<0.05). This study, however, have limitations in obtained sample and area. The future study should consider these limitations to improve model applicability in practice.
