Nickel-copper foam electrodes with pore gradient micro framework and nano-ramified wall have been prepared by using an electrochemical deposition process. Growth habit of nickel-copper co-deposits was quite different from that of pure nickel deposit. In particular, the ramified structure of the individual particles was getting clear with chloride ion content in the electrolyte. The ratio of nickel to copper in the deposits decreased with the distance away from the substrate and the more chloride ions in the electrolyte led to the more nickel content throughout the deposits. Compositional analysis for the cross section of a ramified branch, together with tactical selective copper etching, proved that the copper content increased with approaching central region of the cross section. Such a composition gradient actually disappeared after heat treatment. It is anticipated that the pore gradient nickel-copper nanostructured foams presented in this work might be a promising option for the high-performance electrode in functional electrochemical devices.

A column solid phase extraction procedure based on modified polyurethane foam (PUF) by a newly synthesized Schiff base ionophore, named 2,2'-{iminobis[propane-3,1-diylnitrilo(1E)prop-1-yl-1-ylidene]}diphenol, was developed for preconcentration step of trace amounts determination of copper ions in water samples by atomic absorption flame spectroscopy. The influence of parameters on the adsorption process such as sample pH, amount of modified PUF packed in the column, type and volume of stripping reagent and its flow rate were investigated and optimized. Under optimum experimental conditions, the calibration graph was linear in a relatively wide range ($0.005-210{\mu}g/ml$) with a limit of detection $0.002{\mu}g/ml$ of copper. The proposed method allows achieving to a concentration factor of >133. The capacity of a column (1.6 cm i.d.) packed by 6 g of PUF modified by 12 mg of the Schiff base was found to be $247.7({\pm}2.1){\mu}g$ of copper. It was found that the adsorption process was highly selective towards copper ions with respect to some associated metal ions. The presented procedure was successfully applied for determination of copper in some water samples.

This paper reports the facile synthesis of microlamella-structured porous copper (Cu)-oxide-based electrode and its potential application as an advanced anode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Nanowire-like Cu oxide, which is created by a simple thermal oxidation process, is radially and uniformly formed on the entire surface of Cu foam that has been fabricated using a combination of water-based slurry freezing and sintering (freeze casting). Compared to the Cu foil with a Cu oxide layer grown under the same processing conditions, the Cu foam anode with 63% porosity exhibits over twice as much capacity as the Cu foil (264.2 vs. 131.1 mAh/g at 0.2 C), confirming its potential for use as an anode electrode for LIBs.
To optimize the conductivity and to reduce the weight by as much as possible, Al-Cu composites were prepared through a suction-casting procedure. Pure copper metal foam was infiltrated by melted aluminum with the use of the vacuum, after which warm rolling was conducted to remove several remaining pores at the interface between the Cu foam and the aluminum matrix. Despite the short casting time, significant dissolution of Cu into the melt was observed. Moreover, it was found that various Al-Cu intermetallic compounds arose at the interface during the isothermal heating process after the casting and rolling steps. The average thickness of the Al-Cu intermetallic compound tended to increase in proportion to the heating time. The electrical and thermal conductivity levels of the cast composites were found to be comparatively low, mainly due to the dissolution of the Cu foam and the formation of intermetallics at the interface.

Subendothelial accumulation of foam cells plays a key role in the initiation of atherosclerosis. These foam cells accumulate in fatty streaks that evolve to more complex fibrofatty or atheromatous plaques. Oxidized LDL may also be involved in atherogenesis by inducing smooth muscle cell proliferation and smooth muscle foam cell generation. (omitted)

We investigated the characteristics of heavy metal desorption and recovery from carbon foam after plating wastewater treatment. The heavy metal desorption depends on solution chemistry because desorption occurred in HCl and $H_2SO_4 $ solution but did not occur in distilled water. Heavy metal desorption efficiency was increased using ultrasonication with desorption solution. The higher ultrasonic power and the longer reaction time improve efficiency. The copper plating rinse solution was treated reliably by carbon foam adsorbent during 200 bed volume. The adsorbed copper was dissolved using desorption solution and recovered by DC power supply. After copper recovery, the reuse efficiency of desorption solution was 84.2%.

Micellar enhanced ultrafiltration (MEUF) is a surfactant-based separation process and it can remove heavy metal ions from aqueous stream effectively. However, it is necessary to recover and reuse surfactants for economic feasibility because surfactant is expensive. Foam fractionation was investigated for both anionic and cationic surfactant recovery. Chelating agent such as ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) was studied for the separation of heavy metals from surfactant solution. Anionic surfactants bound with heavy metals can be recovered by lowering pH (acidification). In this study, citric acid and imminodiacetic acid (IDA) were applied to release copper from sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) micellar solution and compared with EDTA. Precipitation of copper by ferricynide and sodium sulfide were also investigated. As a result, ca. 100 % of copper was released from SDS micellar solution by 5 mM of EDTA and citric acid. And 3.3 mM of ferricyanide formed precipitate with 82.7 % of copper. 5 mM of IDA and sodium sulfide released or formed precipitate 82.5 % and 58.9 % of copper, respectively. Citric acid is harmless to environments and ferricyanide precipitates with Cu easily. Therefore, it is considered that citric acid and ferricyanide have competiveness over a famous chelating agent, EDTA, for the separation of Cu from SDS solution.
In the present study, copper and nickel foams with an open-celled structure as trabecular-bone-mimicking phantoms were used to investigate the dependencies of group velocity and attenuation coefficient on structural properties such as trabecular thickness (Tb.Th) and trabecular separation (Tb.Sp) in trabecular bone. The group velocity and attenuation coefficient of the copper and nickel foams were measured by a through-transmission method in water, using a pair of broadband, unfocused transducers with a diameter of 12.7 mm and a center frequency of 1.0 MHz. The separation of the Biot's fast and slow waves was consistently observed in the ultrasonic signals transmitted through the copper and nickel foams. The group velocities of the copper and nickel foams showed highly positive correlations with Tb.Th and Tb.Sp. The attenuation coefficient of the copper foam showed a highly negative correlation with Tb.Th and Tb.Sp, whereas that of the nickle foam showed a highly positive correlation with Tb.Th and Tb.Sp. These results advance our understanding of those previously reported by other researchers using trabecular bone samples or phantoms.
Lipopretein(a)[Lp(a)] is a macromolecular complex found in human plasma that combines structural elements composed of LDL and apo(a), and that is associated with premature coronary heart disease and stroke. In this study, various samples which consisted of normal and abnormal LDL and LP(a) were selected for compar-ison. The above samples were incubated with copper in order to oxidize and to compare atheroma formation, in vitro and free radical formation of Lp(a) was decreased compared to purified LDl. And LDL or Lp(a) from a 40 year old donor was higher in the free radical formation than that fro, a 20 years old donor. In order to investigate the macrophage foam cell formation, oxidized LDL of Lp(a) was incubated with human monocyte derived macrophage(HMDM). Oxidized samples enhanced on acceptability f foam cell formation by HMDM were compared to the control group. Also, structural change of LDL and Lp(a) against oxidation times were found from HPLC mapping.
The bipolar plate is a key component of the polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) that transfers reactants and electrons, discharges water and heat as by-products, and serves as a mechanical support for the membrane electrode assembly (MEA). Therefore, the flow field structure of the bipolar plate plays an important role in improving fuel cell performance. In this study, PEMFC performance was investigated with copper foams with different compressibility ratios applied to cathode bipolar plates using a 25 cm2 unit cell. The total resistance decreased as the compressibility ratio of the metal foams increased, and, in particular, the charge transfer and mass transfer resistance were significantly improved compared to the serpentine flow field, lowering voltage loss in medium and high current density region. In the case of pressurized air reactant flow with serpentine structure, fuel cell performance was similar to that of a compressed metal foam flow field (S3) up to the medium current density region, but low performance appeared in the high current density region due to flow field structure limitations.
