Ten Tips for Performing Your First Peer Review: The Next Step for the Aspiring Academic Plastic Surgeon

  • Performing the first peer review of a plastic surgical research article can be an overwhelming task. However, it is an essential scholarly skill and peer review is used in a multitude of settings: evaluation of journal articles, conference abstracts, and research proposals. Furthermore, peer reviewing provides more than just the opportunity to read and help improve other's work: peer reviewing can improve your own scientific writing. A structured approach is possible and recommended. In these ten tips, we provide guidance on how to successfully conduct the first peer reviews. The ten tips on peer reviewing concern: 1) Appropriateness: are you qualified and prepared to perform the peer review? 2) Familiarization with the journal and its reviewing guidelines; 3) Gathering first impressions of the paper followed by specific tips for reviewing; 4) the abstract and introduction; 5) Materials, methods, and results (including statistical considerations); and 6) discussion, conclusion, and references. Tip 7 concerns writing and structuring the review; Tips 7 and 8 describe how to provide constructive criticism and understanding the limits of your expertise. Finally, Tip 10 details why-and how-you become a peer reviewer. Peer review can be done by any plastic surgeon, not just those interested in an academic career. These ten tips provide useful insights for both the aspiring and the experienced peer reviewer. In conclusion, a systematic approach to peer reviewing is possible and recommended, and can help you getting started to provide quality peer reviews that contribute to moving the field of plastic surgery forward.

Inhibitory Effects of Dunning Rat Prostate Tumor Fluid on Proliferation of the Metastatic MAT-LyLu Cell Line

  • Tumor fluid accumulation occurs in both human cancer and experimental tumor models. Solid tumors show a tendency to tumor fluid accumulation because of their anatomical and physiological features and this may be influenced by molecular factors. Fluid accumulation in the peri-tumor area also occurs in the Dunning model of rat prostate cancer as the tumor grows. In this study, the effects of tumor fluids that were obtained from Dunning prostate tumor-bearing Copenhagen rats on the strongly metastatic MAT-LyLu cell line were investigatedby examining the cell's migration and tumor fluid's toxicity and the kinetic parameters such as cell proliferation, mitotic index, and labelling index. In this research, tumor fluids were obtained from rats injected with $2{\times}10^5$ MAT-LyLu cells and treated with saline solution, and 200 nM tetrodotoxin (TTX), highly specific sodium channel blocker was used. Sterilized tumor fluids were added to medium of MAT-LyLu cells with the proportion of 20% in vitro. Consequently, it was demonstrated that Dunning rat prostate tumor fluid significantly inhibited proliferation (up to 50%), mitotic index, and labeling index of MAT-LyLu cells (up to 75%) (p<0.05) but stimulated the motility of the cells in vitro.

Comparison of accuracy between digital and conventional implant impressions: two and three dimensional evaluations

  • PURPOSE. The present study compared the accuracy between digital and conventional implant impressions. MATERIALS AND METHODS. The experimental models were divided into six groups depending on the implant location and the scanning span. Digital impressions were captured using the intraoral optical scanner TRIOS (3Shape, Copenhagen, Denmark). Conventional impressions were taken with the monophase impression material based on addition-cured silicones, Honigum-Mono (DMG, Hamburg, Germany). A high-precision laboratory scanner D900 (3Shape, Copenhagen, Denmark) was used to obtain digital data of resin models and stone casts. Surface tessellation language (STL) datasets from scanner were imported into the analysis software Geomagic Qualify 14 (3D Systems, Rock Hill, SC, USA), and scan body deviations were determined through two-dimensional and three-dimensional analyses. Each scan body was measured five times. The Sidak t test was used to analyze the experimental data. RESULTS. Implant position and scanning distance affected the impression accuracy. For a unilateral arch implant and the mandible models with two implants, no significant difference was observed in the accuracy between the digital and conventional implant impressions on scan bodies; however, the corresponding differences for trans-arch implants and mandible with six implants were extremely significant (P<.001). CONCLUSION. For short-span scanning, the accuracy of digital and conventional implant impressions did not differ significantly. For long-span scanning, the precision of digital impressions was significantly inferior to that of the traditional impressions.

경부통증 대상자에 대한 코펜하겐 경부기능장애척도의 래쉬 분석 (Rasch analysis to the Copenhagen neck functional disability scale with neck pain subjects)

  • 본 연구의 목적은 래쉬 분석을 통해 한글로 번역된 3점 척도의 코펜하겐 경부기능장애척도가 경부 통증을 가진 연구대상자에게 설문의 선택보기로 적합한가와 각 문항이 경부 통증을 측정하는데 적합한지 신뢰도와 난이도를 알아보는 것이었다. 코펜하겐 경부기능장애척도의 15개 항목 중 '집중력' 항목을 제외하고 나머지 항목은 일상생활의 장애정도를 평가하기에 적합하였다. 평가 항목 중 '사회적 접촉' 항목이 가장 쉬운 항목이었으며, '도움' 항목이 가장 어려운 항목이었다. 코펜하겐 경부기능장애척도의 3점 척도보다는 '예'와 '아니오'로 응답하는 2점 척도가 3점 척도에 비해서 각 범주가 영역별로 잘 구분이 되어지고 난이도가 분명한 것으로 나타났으며, 항목과 대상자의 분리신뢰도가 비교적 높은 평가 척도인 것으로 나타났다. 경한 경부 통증을 가진 대상자들에게는 기존의 15개 항목의 경부 장애척도 설문지보다는 '집중력' 항목을 제외한 14개 항목으로 만들어진 수정된 코펜하겐 경부기능장 애척도를 활용하는 것이 더 바람직 할 것이다. 따라서 14개의 항목 구성과 2점 척도로 수정된 코펜하겐 경부기능장애척도는 경한 경부 통증을 가진 대상자에게는 신뢰도와 타당도가 높은 도구로써 일상 생활의 장애정도를 측정하기에 적당할 것으로 사료된다.

  • A mutant of bacillus subtilis with a defective cdd gene encoding deoxycytidine-cytidine deaminase(EC 3.5.4.5.) has been characterized genetically. The genetic lesion causing the altered deoxycytidine-cytidine deaminase, cdd, was mapped at 225 min on the linkage map of B.subtilis by AR9 transduction Transductional analysis of the cdd region established the gene order as trp-lys-dnaE-cdd-aroD. The cdd gene was linked 72% with the aroD and 20% with the lys.

해외산업간호정보 - 유럽사회에서 보는 산업간호사의 역할

  • 덴마크 코펜하겐에 위치한 WHO의 유럽지부에서 2001년 산업간호사의 역할에 대해 제시하고 있다(The Role of the Occupational Health Nurse in Workplace Health Management. WHO Regional Office for Europe, Copenhagen, 2001). 유럽의 경우 인구가 노령화되면서 산업보건의 중요성이 대두되었고, 산업간호사의 역할이 확대되는 등 우리나라 산업간호의 발전과정과 비교해볼 수 있을 것 같아 소개하고자 한다.

스톡홀름시의 혼잡통행료 징수 체계

  • In Europe, London, Edinbergh, Copenhagen has adopted the traffic congestion charge system, and now the Stockholm City Council started the implementation of a similar system of its own. According to the Swedish National Road Administration, the system implementation starts in 2004 and will be completed by 2005, and so starting 2006, this charge system will be running as planned. Unlike the system of London, that of Stockholm charges the drivers differently depending on when to pass a control point, and not only that, the City Council has a plan to adopt the emerging RFID technology. Following is the summary of both technical and policy-wise considerations of the traffic congestion charge system in Stockholm, Sweden.

  • Nakaoka and Oda ([1] and [2]) introduced the notion of maximal open sets and minimal closed sets in topological spaces. In this paper, we introduce new classes of sets called maximal $\theta$-open sets, minimal $\theta$-closed sets, $\theta$-semi maximal open and $\theta$-semi minimal closed and investigate some of their fundamental properties.

  • Activation parameters of the exchange between two types of glycinate groups in (nitrilotriacetato)dioxovanadate(V) ion, $[VO_2(NTA)]^{2-}$, have been determined as the results of $^{13}C$ NMR measurements over a range of temperatures between 277 and 306$^{\circ}K$. The exchange mechanism is proposed on the basis of the chelate ring opening-closing process, assuming rupture of the metal-oxygen (glycinate) bond trans to V = O bond to give a five-coordinated intermediate.
