Large glazed surfaces and windows become common features in modern buildings. The spread of these features was influenced by the dependence of designers on mechanical and artificial systems to provide occupants with thermal and visual comfort. Countries with hot summer and cold winter conditions, like Jordan, require maximum shading from solar radiation in summer, and maximum exposure in winter to reduce cooling and heating loads respectively. The current research aims at designing optimized double-positioned external shading device systems that help to reduce energy consumption in buildings and provide thermal and visual comfort during both hot and cold seasons. Using energy plus, a whole building energy simulation program, and radiance, Lighting Simulation Tool, with DesignBuilder interface, a series of computer simulations for energy consumption and daylighting performance were conducted for offices with south, east, or west windows. The research was based on comparison to determine the best fit characteristics for two positions of adjustable horizontal louvers on south facade or vertical fins on east and west facades for summer and winter conditions. The adjustable shading systems can be applied for new or retrofitted office or housing buildings. The optimized shading devices for summer and winter positions helped to reduce the net annual energy consumption compared to a base case space with no shading device or with curtains and compared to fix shading devices.
In this study, we chose the rural house as a standard model. In order to review the energy difference of cooling and heating loads, we changed the thermal transmittance standards. By using the thermal transmittance standard in 2011 as the Basic CASE, the thermal transmittance standard in 2013 as well as 2016, and the thermal transmittance standard of passive houses, we compared the results with regard to the cooling and heating energy load. Because of the heat loss, it can be confirmed that with an improved thermal performance of the building structure, the maximum increase of the cooling energy load was 36 kWh from June to September. Because of the heat loss, it was also confirmed that with the improved thermal performance of a building structure, the maximum decrease of the heating energy load is 1,498 kWh from November to April. Even though the heat loss of the building structure could decrease the cooling energy load by improving thermal transmittance standards in Korea, the energy saving performance is worse than the situation of heating energy load in heating period. Compared with CASE 1 and CASE 2, as well as CASE 1 and CASE 3, we CASE 3 was found to have the best energy saving rate when compared to the other cases : CASE 3 increased by 1,452 kWh and CASE 2 by 588 kWh, because the window thermal transmittance standard of 2016 was added.
The suggested year round solar air conditioning system has been developed for cooling and heating. In particular, this system focused on cooling and dehumidification and it could reduce a peak time owing to the use of air conditioners in summer. This study was performed to find out how much heating loads could be saved and furthermore whether this suggested system would be possible to do heating without a switch of system in real situations. Through model house experiments, the following conclusions were obtained. 1) The collector efficiency was 36% at maximum, but more improved structure of suggested collector could increase its efficiency. 2) The temperature of outlet air was about $30^{\circ}C$ and it could reduce heating loads. 3) Measured temperature and calculated one agreed well within ${\pm}1.5^{\circ}C$.
In order to assess the reliability of a building energy simulation program (TRNSYS) from the standpoint of user, a set of verification experiment and calculation of cooling load for a test space is carried out. This work is a complement of the previous study that dealt with heating load for the same space. The test space is kept airtight to eliminate the source of uncertainties in modeling. A window-mounted, on/off controlled air-conditioner is used for cooling, whose performance has been established a priori. The calculation encompasses two models for evaluating cooling load in TRNSYS: energy rate control and temperature level control. Comparison of the total cooling loads obtained from different sets of experimental data enables to validate the measurements. The experimental result shows that the latent load is fairly large even in the absence of apparent air change in the space, which needs to be clarified. Each of hourly and daily accumulated sensible loads is compared between the experiment and two calculation models. Despite an inconsistency associated with solar irradiation, both of the models agree favorably with the experiment within a tolerance, illustrating their capability of properly predicting space thermal loads.
In order to achieve high efficiency of energy use and environment-friendly architectural design, various loads such as cooling, heating and hot water required by the building sector must be accurately predicted. Many studies used dynamic simulation tool to evaluate and analyze building energy performance. However, there are few studies on the comparative analysis of load results by each simulation and the evaluation of simulation characteristics and functions. In this study, the cooling, heating loads and energy demand of the buildings were evaluated using three dynamic simulations for the building with the same input conditions, and the characteristics of each simulation were compared and analyzed through the results. As a result of simulation comparative analysis, cooling, heating load and energy demand was lowest in square type and north-south direction conditions.
Energy consumption data are surveyed and measured to develop energy demand models for hospital buildings as part of a complete package. Daily consumption profiles for electricity, heating, cooling and hot water are surveyed for 14 carefully chosen hospitals to establish energy demand patterns for a time span of a year. Then the hourly demand patterns of the 4 loads are field-measured for different seasons and statistically analyzed to provide higher resolution models. Used in conjunction with energy demand models for other types of buildings, the high resolution of 8760 hour energy demand models for a hospital for a typical year will serve as building blocks for the comprehensive model that allows the estimation of the combined loads for arbitrary mixtures of buildings.
Energy demands for offices in Korea are surveyed and analyzed to generate communicational models for simulations. Daily energy loads of 13 office buildings scattered in the 6 largest cities in the country are surveyed and analyzed based on energy consumption log sheets. Detailed hourly loads that are frequently required when a detailed operation simulation is performed are measured using remote data acquisition processes for 3 offices. The complete load demand models of electricity, cooling, heating and hot water are established by combining the daily and hourly patterns based on the statistical behavior of the hourly patterns.
The main objective of the present study is to investigate the performance characteristics of a ground-source heat pump(GSHP) system with a 130 m vertical and 62 mm nominal diameter U-tube ground heat exchanger. In order to evaluate the performance analysis, the ground-source heat pump connected to a test room with $90\;m^2$ floor area in the Korea Institute of Construction $Technology(37^{\circ}39'N,\;126^{\circ}48'E)$ was designed and constructed. This ground-source heat pump system mainly consisted of ground heat exchanger, indoor heat pumps and measuring devices. The cooling and heating loads of the test room were 5.5 and 7.2 kW at design conditions, respectively. The experimental results were obtained from July 2, 2003 to July 1, 2004. The cooling and heating performance coefficients of the system were determined from the measured data. The average cooling and heating COPs for the system were obtained to be 4.90 and 3.96, respectively. The temperature variations in ground and the ground heat exchanger pipe surface at different depths were also measured.
Reinforcement of insulation in apartment buildings reduces the heating and cooling energy consumption by lowering the heat transfer in the building envelope. There are differences between internal and external insulation methods in heat transmission properties. However, some building load calculation programs cannot analysis the differences between the two. This is because these programs do no account for the timelag or thermal storage effect of the wall according to the location of insulation. In this study, the heat transmission characteristics of internal and external insulation were analyzed by EnergyPlus, and heating and cooling energy demand was compared. The results showed that external insulation system had lower heating and cooling loads than internal insulation system. Also the heat transfer rate of external insulation is steadier than internal insulation. About 13.6% of heating and cooling energy demand decreased when the outdoor wall was finished with external insulation compared to the demand with internal insulation.
