This study presents a numerical procedure to optimize the shape of cylindrical cooling hole to enhance film-cooling effectiveness. The RBNN method is used as an optimization technique with Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes analysis of fluid flow and heat transfer with shear stress transport turbulent model. The hole length-to-diameter ratio and injection angle are chosen as design variables and film-cooling effectiveness is considered as objective function which is to be maximized. Twelve training points are obtained by Latin Hypercube Sampling for two design variables. In the sensitivity analysis, it is found that the objective function is more sensitive to the injection angle of hole than the hole length-to diameter ratio. Optimum shape gives considerable increase in film-cooling effectiveness.
This paper presents the conversion speed drive of the cooling tower fans from constant to variable speed. The speed of fan is adjusted using variable speed drives. Since the ambient temperature of cooling tower is varied seasonally, an economic evaluation was performed to determine the potential annual savings. The performances of the proposed technique were observed using cooling tower fans of chemical plant in Thailand as an illustrative case study. The experimental results demonstrating the energy savings fork cooling process and some economic benefits are obtained.
In the present study, the correlation between the Nusselt number and Reynolds number was developed for forced convection and nucleate boiling region in spray cooling. Also the effect of droplet subcooling on spray cooling heat transfer was investigated. Full cone spray nozzles were employed for spray cooling experiment, and water and FC-77 were used for developing the correlation. From the experimental results, the correlation between the Nusselt number and Reynolds number based on droplet-flow-rate was developed. The correlation shows good predictions with ${\pm}30%$ error for water and FC-77.

The jet impingement cooling characteristics are investigated experimentally. The study is motivated by the potential application of local hot spot cooling by means of the vortex tube. The purposes of this research are to examine the effect of the nozzle-block spacing and flow rate. The results of jet through vortex tube is compared with ones of circular Jet. Flow visualization by the smoke-wire technique is also performed to investigate the flow structure. As the nozzle-block spacing is increased and flow rate decreased, the cooling effect of the Jet through the vortex tube decreases mere remarkably than that of the circular jet. So the cooling effect for the jet through the vortex tube is higher than that for the circular jet at $H/D{\leq}3$, $Q{\geq}10m^3/h$.
The objective of this study is to find the optimal operational planning of the hybrid cooling system, which is combined by ice storage system and the absorption chiller. The optimization technique used in this study is dynamic programming. The objective function is summed cost during a day including charge and discharge periods of ice storage system and operation time of absorption chiller. Assuming that initially ice storage tank is stored fully and the cooling load is perfectly predicted for the operational planning. This method provides the most efficient and economic combination of equipment operational planning for cooling with respect to energy consumption cost.
Impingement cooling utilizing synthetic jets is emerging as a popular cooling technique because of its high local cooling efficiency. The interaction between the vortex structure of the synthetic jet and the surface is crucial in understanding the mechanism of this technique. In this study, the impinging vortex structure and its advection are investigated by experiments with jet-to-surface spacing $2{\leq}H/D{\leq}7$, and synthetic jet Reynolds number $5120{\leq}Re{\leq}9050$. Using phase-locked particle image velocimetry, ensemble averaged (phase averaged) flow fields are obtained, and vortex identification and quantification techniques are applied. The shape, trajectory, and intensity change of the vortex are assessed. A sharp decline in the vortex intensity and the occurrence of a counter-rotating vortex at the impingement point are observed.
In this study, the direct water quenching technique is applied to validate the applicability of direct water quenching as a cooling method in the hot stamping process of 3.2 mm thick boron steel sheet. Cooling performance of conventional die quenching and direct water quenching is compared. Higher cooling rate is obtained by hot stamping with direct water quenching compared to die quenching. As the flow rate of cooling water increases, the cooling rate increases, and a high cooling rate of 71 ℃/s is achieved under flow rate conditions of 0.8 L/min. Through direct water quenching, the cooling time required for sufficient cooling of the sheet is reduced. Full martensitic microstructure is obtained under flow rate condition of 0.8 L/min. Hardness increases with increasing flow rate. From these results, it is verified that the direct water quenching is applicable to the hot stamping of thick boron steel sheet.

The cooling stage is the very critical and most time consuming stage of the injection molding process, thus it cleary affects both the productivity and the part quality. Even through there are several commercialized package programs available in the injection molding industry to analyze the cooling performance of the injection molding coling stage, optimization of the cooling system has npt yet been accomplished in the literature due to the difficulty in the sensitivity analysis. However, it would be greatly desirable for the mold cooling system designers to have a computer aided design system for the cooling stage. With this in mind, the present study has successfully developed an interated computer aided design system for the injection molding cooling system. The CAD system utilizes the sensitivity analysis via a Boundary Element Method, which we recently developed, and the well-known CONMIN alforuthm as an optimization technique to minimize a weighted combination (objective function) of the temperature non-uniformity over the part surface and the cooling time related to the productivity with side constranits for the design reality. In the proposed objective function , the weighting parameter between the temperature non-uniiformity abd the cooling time can be adjusted according to user's interest. In this cooling system optimization, various design variable are considered as follows : (i) (design variables related to processing conditions) inlet coolant bulk temperature and volumetric flow rate of each cooling channel, and (ii) (design variables related to mold cooling system design) radius and location of each cooling channel. For this optimum design problem, three different radius and location of each cooling channel. For this optimum design problem, three different strategies are suffested based upon the nature of design variables. Three sample problems were successfully solved to demonstrated the efficiency and the usefulness of the CAD system.

Two problems with jet injection through the cylindrical film cooling hole are 1) penetration of jet into mainstream rather than covering the surface at high blowing rates and 2) nonuniformity of the film cooling effectiveness in the lateral direction. Compound angle injection is employed to reduce those two problems. Compound angle injection increases the film cooling effectiveness and spreads more widely. However, there is still lift off at high blowing rates. Shaped film cooling hole is a possible means to reduce those two problems. Film cooling with the shaped hole is investigated in this study experimentally. Film cooling hole used in present study is a shaped hole with conically enlarged exit and Inlet-to-exit area ratio is 2.55. Naphthalene sublimation method has been employed to study the local heat/mass transfer coefficient and film cooling effectiveness for compound injection angles and various blowing rates around the shaped film cooling hole. Enlarged hole exit area reduces the momentum of the jet at the hole exit and prevents the penetration of injected jet into the mainstream effectively. Hence, higher and more uniform film cooling effectiveness values are obtained even at relatively high blowing rates and the film cooling jet spreads more widely with the shaped film cooling hole. And the injected jet protects the surface effectively at low blowing rates and spreads more widely with the compound angle injections than the axial injection.

Film cooling effectiveness on the convergent or divergent channel was measured by pressure sensitive paint technique. The channel convergent or divergent angle was changed from $-5^{\circ}$ to $10^{\circ}$ and the tested blowing ratios were 0.5, 1 and 2. Results showed that the film cooling effectiveness on the convergent channel was not much affected by the convergent angle. With divergent film cooled surface, the film cooling effectiveness near the injection hole decreased as the divergent angle increases. However, the film cooling effectiveness at far downstream from the hole showed opposite trend. For the non-film cooled surface inclined case, the film cooling effectiveness was not much affected by the divergent angle.
