Spalling of the Oxide Scales Foemed on Stainless Steels During Cooling

  • High temperature oxidation of SUS430 and SUS304 stainless steels in 16.7 kPa $O_2$ - 20.3 kPa $H_2O$ - balanced N2 atmosphere at 1273 K was studied focused on the scale spalling during cooling after an isothermal oxidation. Spalling of the oxide scale during cooling occurred only for SUS304 stainless steel. The oxide scale was composed of two layers and they detached at the interface between them. The reason for the spalling could not be explained only by thermal stresses applied to the specimen during heating and cooling. A new mechanism for scale spalling was proposed based on combination of thermal stresses and thermal shock caused by a fast Martensite transformation of substrate metal.

  • The thermal shock and thermal fatigue test has been carried out to analyze the thermal characteristics of tool steels for hot forging and the effects of mechanical properties on this study have been investigated. The resistance to thermal shock is first of all a matter of good toughness and ductility. Therefore, a proper hot-work tool steel should be characterized by high fracture strength and high temperature toughness. Based on these results, some critical temperature($T_{fracture}$) at which fracture occur can be measured to characterize the thermal resistance of the materials. During thermal fatigue tests, the thermal fatigue cracks occur because of the repetitive heating and cooling of the die surface and the thermal fatigue damage was evaluated by analyzing different number of cycles to failure. The results showed that the resistance to thermal shock and thermal fatigue were found to be favoured by high hot tensile strength and high hot hardness, and thermal resistance of SKD61 was superior to that of ESC, SKT4 and this was caused by higher mechanical properties of SKD61.

SEMI-ANALYTIC MODELS FOR ELECTRON ACCELERATION IN WEAK ICM SHOCKS

  • We propose semi-analytic models for the electron momentum distribution in weak shocks that accounts for both in situ acceleration and re-acceleration through diffusive shock acceleration (DSA). In the former case, a small fraction of incoming electrons is assumed to be reflected at the shock ramp and pre-accelerated to the so-called injection momentum, pinj, above which particles can diffuse across the shock transition and participate in the DSA process. This leads to the DSA power-law distribution extending from the smallest momentum of reflected electrons, pref, all the way to the cutoff momentum, peq, constrained by radiative cooling. In the latter case, fossil electrons, specified by a power-law spectrum with a cutoff, are assumed to be re-accelerated from pref up to peq via DSA. We show that, in the in situ acceleration model, the amplitude of radio synchrotron emission depends strongly on the shock Mach number, whereas it varies rather weakly in the re-acceleration model. Considering the rather turbulent nature of shocks in the intracluster medium, such extreme dependence for the in situ acceleration might not be compatible with the relatively smooth surface brightness of observed radio relics.

  • To maintain high quality and to extend the shelf life of intact and minimally processed apple cubes, the effect of heat shock on the texture and color of apple cubes (Fuji) was evaluated in this study. After peeled and cored, the apples were cut into cubes of 1.5 cm. The heat shock was immersion in heated water from 25$^{\circ}C$ to 95$^{\circ}C$ in 10$^{\circ}C$ increments for 2 min and cooling to storage temperature as soon as possible after heat treatment. The effect of heat treatment in terms of color and texture measurements with respect to time was investigated, respectively during 7 days storage at in LDPE film bags without sealing at 4$^{\circ}C$, and 95% relative humidity air. Results suggest that heat shock (55$^{\circ}C$, 2 min) may have effectively delayed browning, and there were significant changes in color of apple cube when the temperature of heat shock is above 75$^{\circ}C$. And hardness, stiffness and firmness, which were used to describe texture, behaved similarly in the textural qualities. It was shown that the texture of the apple cubes was decreased with temperature increase. The value of them were most decreased to 70% of the initial ones after treated with 85$^{\circ}C$ and 95$^{\circ}C$ on the lust day.

Fracture Behavior of Ceramic Coatings Subjected to Thermal Shock (열충격에 의한 세라믹코팅재의 파괴거동)

  • An experimental study was conducted to develop and understanding of fracture behavior of ceramic thermal barrier coating when subjected to a thermal shock loading. The thermal loading was applied using a 1.5kW $CO_2$ laser. In the experiments, beam-shaped specimens were subjected to a high heat flux for 4sec and cooling of 7sec in air. The interface crack length was increased as the crack density, the surface pre-crack legth and the coating thickness were increased. The center surface crack length was increased as the maximum surface temperature got higher and the surface pre-crack length for shorter.

  • There are several factors affected fractures of full contour zirconia (FCZ) dental prosthesis in laboratory process. First, residual moisture can cause zirconia cracks. Complete dry is requisite before zirconia sintering to prevent zirconia cracks. Second, slow cooling rate is essential to prevent cracks during zirconia sintering process. Cracks in bridge pontic area, thick dental implant prosthesis can be prevented by slow cooling rate such as 3 degree Celsius per minute during zirconia sintering. Third, slow heating rate and slow cooling rate during staining and glazing procedure is necessary to inhibit thermal shock of sintered dental zirconia. Lower preheat temperature of porcelain furnace is recommended. Finally, using diamond disc to open embrasure can lead cracks.

Evaluation of Toxicity of Green Tea Extract in Chilled Boar Spermatozoa

  • The cold shock of spermatozoa is associated with oxidative stress induced by reactive oxygen species. This study was conducted to evaluate the toxicity of natural antioxidant green tea extract (GTE) in lactose-egg yolk (LEY) extender during boar sperm cooling prior to freezing. Spermatozoa were cooled to $5^{\circ}C$ for 3 h in LEY extender containing 0 (control), 1, 10, 100 or 1,000 mg/l of GTE, re-suspended with LEY-glycerol-Equex extender and cooled at $5^{\circ}C$ for 30 min. Sperm progressive motility, viability and phosphatidylserine (PS) translocation were evaluated. PS translocation was assayed by flow cytometry using Annexin V-FITC apoptosis detection kit. The sperm function including progressive motility, viability and PS translocation was not significantly different regardless of GTE concentrations (P>0.05). In conclusion, this study demonstrated non-toxicity of GTE supplement in LEY extender during sperm cooling.

Numerical Study on the Effect of Injection Nozzle Shape on the Cooling Performance in Supersonic Film Cooling (초음속 막냉각 유동에서 분사 노즐 형상이 냉각성능에 미치는 영향에 관한 수치해석적 연구)

  • In this study, the effect of injection nozzle shape on the supersonic film cooling performance is analyzed using CFD. The design parameters are inside and outside angles of upper plate of nozzle and nozzle tip thickness. It is observed that the mass flow rate of film cooling decreases with increase of inside angle, while the effect of the change of mass flow rate on the film cooling effectiveness is relatively small. In addition, cooling performance is generally reduced, except ahead of the local region where shock wave interaction with film cooling occurs, in accordance with the growth of the outside angle and tip thickness. In this paper, the CFD simulation is performed using a commercial software, ANSYS Fluent V15.0, and the CFD model is validated by comparing it with the experimental data shown in preceding research.
