In this study, a two-stage phase-separate cycle was investigated analytically to improve the performance of the $CO_2$ system in the cooling mode. The simulation results were verified with the measured data. The predictions using the simulation model were consistent with the measured data within ${\pm}20%$ deviations. The performance of the modified $CO_2$ system with the two-stage phase-separated cycle was analyzed with the variations of outdoor temperature and EEV opening. The cooling COP decreased with the increase of compressor frequency. The highest COP was 2.7 at compressor frequencies of 30 Hz and 30 Hz for the first and second compressors, respectively. In addition, the cooling COP increased by 9.3% with an application of optimum control of the first and second-stage EEV openings.
Basic design of a 50USRT(175㎾) triple effect absorption chiller driven by hot gas has been carried out for both parallel and series flow cycles. Parallel flow cycle showed higher COP, however, the temperature in the generator was also higher than that in series flow cycle. Dynamic operation behavior of a parallel flow system at off-design conditions, such as the change in heat transfer medium temperature or the construction change of the system components, has been investigated in detail. It was found that the cooling capacity was seriously decreased by reducing hot gas flow rate and UA-value in the high temperature generator. However, the system COP was improved, because thermal load in the system components was reduced. The COP and the cooling capacity was found to be improved as cooling water temperature decreased or chilled water temperature increased. The optimum ratio of solution distribution could be suggested by considering the COP, the cooling capacity and the highest temperature in the system, which is critical for corrosion.
An exhaust-heated gas turbine cycle equipped with a waste heat recovery boiler and ammonia absorption-type refrigerator using waste heat is newly devised and analyzed. The general performance of this cycle is compared with that of the conventional gas turbine cycle. This cycle shows a potential high efficiency. When 1500K of gas turbine inlet temperature the efficiency is 53 percent as compared to 45 percent for a conventional combined cycle. Suction cooling of this cycle leads to improve the thermal efficiency and the specific output.
The purpose of this analytic study is to design and examine an efficient hydrogen liquefaction cycle by using a pre-cooler. The liquefaction cycle is primarily comprised of a pre-cooler and a refrigerator. The fed hydrogen gas is cooled down from ambient temperature (300 K) to the pre-cooling coolant temperature (either 77 K or 120 K approximately) through the pre-cooler. There are two pre-cooling methods: a single pre-coolant pre-cooler and a cascade pre-cooler which uses two levels of pre-coolants. After heat exchanging with the pre-cooler, the hydrogen gas is further cooled and finally liquefied through the refrigerator. The working fluids of the potential pre-cooling cycle are selected as liquid nitrogen and liquefied natural gas. A commercial software Aspen HYSYS is utilized to perform the numerical simulation of the proposed liquefaction cycle. Efficiency is compared with respect to the various conditions of the heat exchanging part of the pre-cooler. The analysis results show that the cascade method is more efficient, and the heat exchanging part of the pre-coolers should have specific UA ratios to maximize both spatial and energy efficiencies. This paper presents the quantitative performance of the pre-cooler in the hydrogen liquefaction cycle in detail, which shall be useful for designing an energy-efficient liquefaction system.
This paper presents the optimization process of liquid desiccant cooling cycle using LiCl aqueous solution as a working fluid. Operating conditions and design factors for heat exchangers were optimized by response surface method. As a result, we obtained the 7.297 kW of cooling capacity and 0.788 of COP at optimized condition. Effect of $dT_{hw}$ on system performances was also examined. As $dT_{hw}$ increases, the cooling capacity increases and COP decreases.

In order to reduce the compression power and to use the overall energy contained in LNG effectively, a combined cycle is devised and simulated. The combined cycle is composed of two cycles; one is an open cycle of liquid/solid carbon dioxide production cycle utilizing LNG cold energy in $CO_2$ condenser and the other is a closed cycle gas turbine which supplies power to the $CO_2$ cycle, utilizes LNG cold energy for lowering the compressor inlet temperature, and uses the heating value of LNG at the burner. The power consumed for the $CO_2$ cycle is investigated in terms of a solid $CO_2$ production ratio. The present study shows that much reduction in both $CO_2$ compression power (only 35% of the power used in conventional dry ice production cycle) and $CO_2$ condenser pressure could be achieved by utilizing LNG cold energy and that high cycle efficiency (55.3% at maximum power condition) in the gas turbine could be accomplished with the adoption of compressor inlet cooling and regenerator. Exergy analysis shows that irreversibility in the combined cycle increases linearly as a solid $CO_2$ production ratio increases and most of the irreversibility occurs in the condenser and the heat exchanger for compressor inlet cooling. Hence, incoming LNG cold energy to the above components should be used more effectively.
Painting process or coating with acrylic film may improve the surface defects of injection molded parts deteriorated by weldlines. flow marks. and etc. However such processes increase the production costs and increase environmental problems. Recently various types of rapid mold heating & cooling technology have been developed in order to improve surface quality of products. In this study. the heating & cooling performance of a telephone case mold is investigated by heat transfer analysis, in which the rapid mold heating & reeling technology is applied. The surface temperature of the mold was measured using thermal image camera and compared with analysis results. The influence of the rapid mold heating & cooling technology on weldline appearance and cycle time increase was also examined.
Parametric cycle analysis of a dual-spool, mixed exhaust turbofan engine with turbine blade cooling were described to investigate the effect of turbine blade cooling on the engine performance such as specific thrust and thrust specific fuel consumption. Coolant of low pressure turbine triggers high engine performance loss and cooling effect loss in high pressure turbine. Therefore low pressure turbine coolant should be much more considered for effective design.
As a power transmission line supplying power to a densely populated city, the high temperature superconducting (HTS) cable is expected to one of the most effective cables with a compact size because of its high current density. The verification of HTS power cable system have been progressed by KEPRI. A cooling system for a 3-phase 100m HTS power cable with 22.9kV/1.25kA was installed and tested at KEPCO's Gochang power testing center in Korea. The system consists of a liquid nitrogen decompression cooling system with a cooling capacity of 3kW and a closed circulation system of subcooled liquid nitrogen. Several performance tests of the cable system with respect to the cooling such as cooling capacity, heat load and temperature stability, were performed at several temperatures. Thermal cycle test, cool-down to liquid nitrogen temperature and warm-up to room temperature, was also performed to investigate thermal cycle influences. The outline of the installed cooling system and performance test results are presented in this paper.
