  • The residual stress distribution in a unidirectional graphite/epoxy laminate induced during the fabrication process is investigated at the microstress level within the scope of linear viscoelasticity. To estimate the residual stresses, the fabrication process is divided into polymerization phase and cool-down phase, and strength of materials approach is employed. Large residual stresses are not generated during polymerization phase because the relaxation modulus is relatively small due to the relaxation ability at this temperature level. The residual stresses increase remarkably during cool-down process. The magnitude of final residual stress is about 80% of the ultimate strength of the matrix material at room temperature. This suggests that the residual stress can have a significant effect on the performance of composite structure.

  • A numerical simulation has been carried out for the automotive air conditioning system. The purpose of this simulation is to present the methods for simulating car air conditioning components, systems and cool-down performance by computerized mathematical model and to analyze the performance of A/C system. In analyzing the heat exchanger(evaporator and condenser), the finite volume model which has a merit in predicting the temperature field in detail because it can consider partial variation of thermal property and heat transfer coefficient is used. In analyzing the compressor, the polytropic approach which regards the actual compression process as a reversible polytropic process is employed. In analyzing vehicle passenger compartment, the thermal network is employed to simulate the car cool down process. This A/C system program can be used for analyzing a component performance when a component is alternated or designed and for analyzing the engine cooling system when A/C system is operated.

  • Response of two ploidy levels to cool temperature and short day treatment were investigated under controlled conditione of Phytotron. The haploid and diploid of seven genotypes were started and grown to the 8- leaf stage in the greenhouse. They were treated during 15 and 20 days to 8- hour photoperiods at 18$^{\circ}C$ in controlled - environmental room to induce premature flowering, respectively. Diploid plants of seven genotypes flower later than their haploid plants at 20 days treatment. But under 15 days treatment, diploid plants of NC82, Hicks, BY4, NC2326 and Coker86 were not different from their haploid plants for days to flower. Diploid plants of seven genotypes developed the same number of leaves as their haploid plants at 20 days treatment. Under 15 days treatment, diploid plants of Coker347 and NC95 developed more leaves per plant than their haploid plants. Correlation coefficient between the ranks of leaves per plant of seven genotypes at two ploidy levels was 0.964 and 0.929 at 15 and 20 days treatment, respectively.

  • A study has been made of cool-down process on an incompressible fluid contained in a periodically oscillating cylinder when an abrupt cooling of wall temperature is imposed. Characteristics of flow and heat transfer are investigated along the variations of oscillating frequency and amplitude. One found the flow regimes are divided into 4-modes : 1 thermal island mode, 2 thermal island mode, 4 thermal island mode and asymmetry mode. Comprehensive analysis for each mode are given with a physical mechanism on cool-down process.

  • A PSV (pressurizer safety valve) popping test carried out in the early phases of a refueling outage may trigger a test-induced LOCA(loss of coolant accident) if a PSV fails to fully close and is stuck in a partially open position. According to a KSNP (Korea standard nuclear power plant) low power and shutdown PSA (probabilistic safety assessment), the failure of a high pressure safety injection (HPSI) accompanied by the failure of a PSV to fully close was identified as a dominant accident sequence with a significant impact on low power and shutdown risks (LPSR). In this study, we aim to investigate and verify a new means for mitigating this type of accident using a thermal-hydraulic analysis. In particular, we explore the applicability of an aggressive cool-down combined with operator actions. The results of the various sensitivity studies performed there will help reduce LPSR and improve Refueling outage safety.

  • In case of aged porcelain, the failure in basic performance tests happened in cool-heat tests. Based on this characteristic, we studied the method predicting failure phenomena through more severe accelerated cool-heat ageing and accelerating thermal mechanical performance tests. Test results indicated that the thermal stress by temperature gradient was more severe parameter than thermal stress by quenching cycles within a category of standard or accelerating methods. And there is no the deterioration of statistic strength, but the deterioration of strength according to accelerating tests is serious.

  • This experiment was conducted to investigate a cause of summer depression of cool season turfgrass, using nine cultivars in warm season and twenty-eight cool season turfgrasses. Even though an average of apparent photosynthesis(APS) per fresh weight was 13.09 mg $CO_2$/g/h in warm season turfgrass and 7.75 mg $CO_2$/g/h in cool season turfgrass, the Creeping bentgrass in cool season type was higher than Kikuyugrass and Bahiagrass in warm season type. The optimum temperature for the heighest APS was $30^{\circ}C$ in warm season type and $25^{\circ}C$ in cool season type. In $CO_2$ compensation point(CCP) as an index of dark respiration, it was higher in cool season turfgrass(75.6ppm) than warm season turfgrass(29.5ppm). In warm season type, even though the temperature increased from $25^{\circ}C$ to $40^{\circ}C$ the CCP was not increased. But the higher temperature rises the more increased CCP in cool season type. Dark respiration(DR) was higher in cool season type than warm season type under various temperature conditions, but the increasing ratio of DR with the temperature increment was not so much differed between two types.

  • This experiment was carried out to compare the effects of summer temperature and nitrogen application on carbohydrates and fiber contents in orchardrass stubble grown in the cool summer year, 1980 and in the hot summer year, 1984. For this study, the contents of carbohydrates, neutral detergent fiber (NDF), acid detergent fiber(ADF) and hemicellulose in orchardgrass stubble were investigated. 1. Total water soluble carbohydrates(TSC) in orchardrass stubble were accumulated during the period of cool season and were declined when the weather was hot and dry. The reserve level of those were decreased when a new leaf emerged after the start of plant growth and then were increased as the plant was in full flourish. 2. The reserve of carbohydrate content in orchardgrass stubble was about twice times higher in cool summer year than that in hot summer year, and the reserve rate of carbohydrates showed to be fast in cool summer year. When the nitrogen fertilizer applied, the content of TSC in orchardgrass stubble more lowered but not significantly different(p<0.05). 3. The contents of NDF, ADF and hemicellulose in orchardgrass stubble in cool summer year were not significantly different from those in hot summer year. These contents showed also no significant difference among different levels of nitrogen applications. 4. The relationship of carbohydrate, NDF, ADF and hemicelluose contents according to the levels of nitrogen applications were negatively correlated in cool summer year. But there was no consistency in hot summer year.
