  • The design criteria of Linear Induction Motors (LIM) for Auto-Conveyor System are proposed by analyzing of starting characteristics using an equivalent circuit. By contrasting the solution of the equivalent circuit with that of Maxwell's equation, we induced the parameters of the circuit. Also, the utility of the design criteria has been shown by comparing the basic characteristics with experimental values.

  • In order to detect and monitor the broken cords of steel-cord belt from being damaged by impact of large lump of materials and the corrosion of steel cord, we developed a non-contact magnetic coil detection system. This measures the deterioration of reinforcing cables in steel cord conveyor belt which transport the ores in raw material plant. In this research, magnetic coil sensor of broken-cord detection system has exciting part and sensing part. The broken-cord detection system is operated by supplying a transmitter coil with electric power to generate magnetic field, and then the change of induced voltage is detected in each receiver coils due to resultant magnetic flux effected by the broken steel cords at the inside of the conveyor belt. By the informations such as the position and size of the broken steel cords obtained by SCBMS(Steel Cord Belt Monitoring System), it is expected that not only the span of belt life will be lengthened, but also this system can enable operators to plan scheduled maintenance and prevent the enlargement of damaged parts in steel cord belt at an early stage

  • The CRT(Cathode Ray Tube) displays have been substituted for FPDs(Flat Panel Displays) such as LCD(Liquid Crystal Display) and PDP(Plasma Display Panel) because they have a convex surface, large volume and heavy weight. The productivity of FPDs is greatly dependent on the area of thin glass panel with $0.6{\sim}0.8mm$ thickness because FPDs are manufactured by cutting a large-scaled thin glass panel with patterns to the required product dimensions. So FPD's industries are trying to increase the area of thin glass Panel. Through FEM(Finite Element Method) analysis and fluid analysis, we developed an non-contact and air-floating conveyor system which consists of transport-module, distributor, horizontal/vertical changer and controller for the 7th generation glass panel (2,200mm in width, 1,870mm in length and 0.7mm in thickness). The design technology developed in this study can be effectively applied to a conveyor system for a larger-scaled thin glass panel.

  • In this paper, client/server model for remote conveyor control and monitoring system is designed and implemented to simulate the product line of vehicles. The client system located at the monitoring office is using a web applet based system, and sends some commands to the server system which guards and controls the conveyer system directly. And server system is implemented as the web based system by using Java programming language too. The system has a distributed database system environments to manage and maintain the product line of conveyor system.

Meteorological Mechanisms Associated with Long-range Transport of Asian Dust Observed at the West Coast of North America in April 2001

  • Meteorological mechanisms in association with long-range transport of Asian dust in April 2001 have been investigated using weather maps, satellite images, TOMS and surface $PM_{10}$ data, backward trajectories, plus modeling output results (geopotential heights, horizontal wind vectors, potential temperatures, and streamlines). The results indicated that long -range transport of Asian dust to the west coast of North America was associated with strong westerlies between the Aleutian low and the Pacific high acting as a conveyor belt. Accelerating westerly flows due to cyclogenesis at the source regions over East Asia transported pollution from the continent to the central Pacific. When the system reached the Aleutian Islands, the intensity of troughs and the westerlies were amplified in the North Pacific. Thereafter the winds between the Aleutian Islands and the Pacific Ocean were more intensified from the air flow transport of the conveyor belt. Consequently, the strong wind in the conveyor belt enhanced the dust transport from the Pacific Ocean to the west coast of North America. This was evidenced by $PM_{10}$ concentration (maximum of about $100{\mu}g\;m^{-3}$) observed In California. Further evidence of the dust transport was found through the observation of satellite images, the distribution of TOMS aerosol index, and the analyses of streamlines and backward trajectories.

  • A system to extract continuously the real 3-D geometric fearture information from 2-D image of an object, which is fed randomly via conveyor has been developed. Two sets of structured laser lightings were utilized. And the laser structured light projection image was acquired using the camera from the signal of the photo-sensor mounted on the conveyor. Camera coordinate calibration matrix was obtained, which transforms 2-D image coordinate information into 3-D world space coordinate using known 6 points. The maximum error after calibration showed 1.5 mm within the height range of 103mm. The correlation equation between the shift amount of the laser light and the height was generated. Height information estimated after correlation showed the maximum error of 0.4mm within the height range of 103mm. An interactive 3-D geometric feature extracting software was developed using Microsoft Visual C++ 4.0 under Windows system environment. Extracted 3-D geometric feature information was reconstructed into 3-D surface using MATLAB.

  • This research is concerned with production scheduling for FMS (Flexible Manufacturing System) which consists of machine centers served by cycle conveyor. The objective of the research is to develop and evaluate scheduling procedures to minimize the mean flow time. An optimal algorithm called SCTF (Shortest Circle Time First) is proposed when the conveyor runs at minimum possible speed (CS=1) and a heuristic algorithm called SCTJMF (Shortest Cycle Time and Job Matching Algorithm) is suggested when the conveyor runs at double speed (CS=2). The evaluation of the heuristic algorithm was implemented by comparison with the optimal algorithm for 112 experimentations for CS=1 and random schedule. The results showed that the proposed heuristic algorithm provides better solution that can be regarded noticeable when compared with SCTF algorithm and random scheduling.

  • Generally, the assembly system relied on conveyor lines is efficient for mass production. But it is not efficient when the product types are often varying and their lot sizes are small. Especially, it is much inefficient for the assembly lines for the electronic products whose types are varying very often. This paper suggests the design of U-shaped assembly lines to replace the existing conveyor systems. The assembly line for the mini-cassette production is dealt with as a case study. The proposed procedure was successfully applied for the design of U-shaped lines. The developed method resulted in the improvement of the productivity such as the decrease of the man power and the cycle time, and the increase of the line utility.

  • A novel single-phase induction machine drive containing full bridge inverter is presented. The drive is intended for conveyor system or a similar type of application requiring variable-speed operation with a fan-type load characteristic. An experimental drive based on the proposed setup has been built to verify its practical viability. The paper presents the results obtained from an investigation and discusses the properties and characteristics of the drive for the entire speed range from 0 to 60Hz.
