Resonance Investigation and Active Damping Method for VSC-HVDC Transmission Systems under Unbalanced Faults

  • Grid unbalanced faults can cause core saturation of power transformer and produce lower-order harmonics. These issues increase the electrical stress of power electronic devices and can cause a tripping of an entire HVDC system. In this paper, based on the positive-sequence and negative-sequence impedance model of a VSC-HVDC system as seen from the point of common connection (PCC), the resonance problem is analyzed and the factors determining the resonant frequency are obtained. Furthermore, to suppress over-voltage and over-current during resonance, a novel method using a virtual harmonic resistor is proposed. The virtual harmonic resistor emulates the role of a resistor connected in series with the commutating inductor without influencing the active and reactive power control. Simulation results in PSCAD/EMTDC show that the proposed control strategy can suppress resonant over-voltage and over-current. In addition, it can be seen that the proposed strategy improves the safety of the VSC-HVDC system under unbalanced faults.

  • In the dissertation, a power conversion system for fuel cell is composed of a PWM inverter with LC filter in order to convert fuel cell voltage to a single phase 220[V]. In addition, new insulated DC-DC converters are proposed in order that fuel cell voltage is boosted to 380[V]. In this paper, it requires smaller components than existing converters, which makes easy control. The proposed DC-DC converter controls output power by the adjustment of phase-shift width using switch $S_5\;and\;S_6$ in the secondary switch which provides 93-97[%] efficiency in the wide range of output voltage. Fuel cell simulator is implemented to show similar output characteristics to actual fuel cell. Appropriate dead time td enables soft switching to the range where the peak value of excitation current in a high frequency transformer is in accordance with current in the primary circuit. Moreover, appropriate setting to serial inductance La reduces communication loss arisen at light-load generator and serge voltage arisen at a secondary switch and serial diode. A Study on the Development of Harmonic Limit Device for Stabilizing Main Circuit Equipment of Train (열차운행 안정화를 위한 주회로 기기의 고조파 제한장치 개발에 관한 연구)

  • This paper proposes the application of harmonic constraints to address the problems caused by abnormal voltage increases when electric railway vehicles are running. The AC line that supplies the train with power during operation is used to provide electricity of 25kV/60 Hz, but gradually the size and frequency of harmonics involved in the line are varied with the technological evolution of the railroad vehicle electrical equipment. An increase in heat losses due to the failure of the instrument transformer (PT), the main circuit device, which is a serious problem with the recent train safety operation, or to the main displacement voltage. When high frequency components are introduced through low frequency Transformers of the main circuit device, the high intensity of the components is caused by the high intensity of the core and the current flow of the parasitic core is increased, thus generating heat. To solve this problem, the recent adjustment of the sequence has applied artificial NOTCH OFF of the power converter. However, the method of receiving and controlling the OFF signal operates by interaction between the ground and the vehicle's devices, thus it is invalid in the event of failure, and an actual accident is occurring. Therefore, the harmonic currents were required to prevent possible flow of harmonics, and conducted a study to prevent accidental occurrence of train accidents and to verify feasibility of the device through the simulations of the train's experimental analysis and the simulations of the train for safe operation.

A harmonic reduction scheme for 12-pulse diode rectifiers by auxiliary voltage supply (보조전원장치에 의한 12-펄스정류기의 고조파 저감)

  • Diode rectifiers have been widely used for an AC to DC converter. But a big problem is that they include large harmonics components in the input currents. A 12-pulse configuration with phase shifting transformer is useful for reducing them. however, it still includes the ($12{\pm}1$)th (m; integer) harmonics in the input currents. In this paper, we propose a single-phase square wave auxiliary voltage supply which is inserted in the middle DC bus. It reduces harmonics especially the 11th and 13th and the harmonic characteristic becomes almost equivalent to a 24-pulse rectifier. Theoretical analysis of the combined 12-pulse diode rectifier with the auxiliary supply is presented and a control method of the auxiliary supply is proposed. The reduction in the input current harmonics is verified by simulation using software PSIM.

  • There are various environmental conditions under which ship may navigate over ocean or in harbor. Ship's torque and speed change frequently under the voyage conditions. In this case, harmonics is created in the electrical power systems. The major adverse impacts of voltage and current harmonics in the electrical power systems on generator, transformer, converter, inverter and propulsion motor lead to the increase of machine heating caused by iron and copper losses which are dependent on frequency. In this paper, an analysis of THD(total harmonic distortion) for currents and voltages in the propulsion equipment was carried out. The THD and torque ripple in the input currents of the propulsion motor have been confirmed by the simulation results.

  • In this study, a Ka-band waveguide rotary joint that can be applied to a millimeter-wave seeker is designed and fabricated. The proposed rotary joint maintains a low standing-wave ratio and low-loss characteristics, and has two rotary axes designed to enable azimuth and elevation rotation. The rotary joint is designed as a ridge-waveguide-type mode converter and a ${\lambda}/4$ choke structure to match the electromagnetic wave propagation mode between the spherical and circular waveguides. A performance test using a network analyzer and a high-power transmitter to assess vibration and shock were conducted. Results showed that the rotary joint had a very low standing-wave ratio of less than the maximum of 1.19:1 and an insertion loss of less than 0.80 dB at $F_C{\pm}500MHz$.

  • In this work, a capacitive wireless power transfer (C-WPT) system is presented for wireless sensor system (WSS) applications in marine propulsion shafts. For a single Q factor on both sides of the coupling capacitor and reactive power removal from the circuit, a double-sided LCLC converter and transformers topology are designed to drive the rotary C-WPT system for WSS on the shaft. Parallel-connected parallel plate rotating capacitors with a capacitance of 170 pF are designed and implemented for the C-WPT system on a snow rotating shaft. In the experimental results, the C-WPT system achieved a transmission efficiency of 66.67% with 7.8 W output power at 3 mm distance and 1 MHz operating frequency. Therefore, it was proved that the fabricated C-WPT system can supply power to the WSS of the rotating shaft.

  • A RVDT is a sensor that measures angular displacement and the output signal of RVDT is a DSBSC-AM signal. For this reason, a DSBSC-AM demodulation processor is required to determine the angular displacement from the output signal. In this paper, DADC(Digital Angle to DC) which extracts the angular displacement from the output signal of a RVDT is implemented based-on modified Costas Loop usually used in the demodulation of DSBSC-AM signal by using FPGA. DADC can used with both 4-wire and 5-wire RVDTs and can exactly compensate the phase difference between the input excitation and output signals of a RVDT unlike the conventional analog RVDT signal conditioners which require external components. Since digital signal processing technique that can enhance the linearity is exploited, DADC shows 0.035% linearity error, which is smaller than 0.005% that of a conventional analog signal conditioner. The DADC are tested in an integrated experimental environment which includes a commercial RVDT sensor, ADC and an analog output block.

Input and Output Characteristics of Input Current Controlled Inverter Arc Welding Machine with High Efficiency (입력전류 제어형 고효율 인버터아크용접시스템의 입력 및 출력 특성연구)

  • Shielded metal arc welding machines with AC transformer have been widely used for thin-plate welding applications. Because of being bulky, heavy and of tap-changing property, so the SMAW's are changing to new power electronic circuits such as inverter circuit in order to reduce the system size and also to improve the welding performances at input output sides. The PWM inverter arc welding machine with diode rectifier has better output welding performances but it is has the plentiful harmonics and the lower input power factor. To solve these problems, input current-controlled scheme is considered for PWM inverter arc welding system, and then total input power factor is maintained to be more than 99%. Also a new combined control is proposed which can control both instantaeous welding output voltage and current under constant power condition, and as a result the variations of instantaneous current and voltage can be reduced to very narrow range in the V-I curve relationship, and hence the variance of welding current and voltage become so reduced. In addition the spatter generated during welding process is greatly reduced up to 70%. And the overall effiency can be improved up to 10%, which becomes higher when the load is lower.

Design and Reliability Evaluation of 5-V output AC-DC Power Supply Module for Electronic Home Appliances (가전기기용 직류전원 모듈 설계 및 신뢰성 특성 해석)

  • This paper presents an AC-DC power module design and evaluates its efficiency and reliability when used for electronics appliances. This power module consists of a PWM control IC, power MOSFETs, a transformer and several passive devices. The module was tested at an input voltage of 220V (RMS) (frequency 60 Hz). A test was conducted in order to evaluate the operation and power efficiency of the module, as well as the reliability of its protection functions, such as its over-current protection (OVP), overvoltage protection (OVP) and electromagnetic interference (EMI) properties. Especially, we evaluated the thermal shut-down protection (TSP) function in order to assure the operation of the module under high temperature conditions. The efficiency and reliability measurement results showed that at an output voltage of 5 V, the module had a ripple voltage of 200 mV, power efficiency of 73 % and maximum temperature of $80^{\circ}C$ and it had the ability to withstand a stimulus of high input voltage of 4.2 kV during 60 seconds.
