Polymer Solar Cells: Fundamentals and Recent Trends

  • Polymer solar cells have become one of the rising next generation solar cells due to their potential for lightweight and bendable plastic solar modules. Recently, the power conversion efficiency of polymer solar cells has reached ~8 %, which can make ~6 % plastic solar modules when it comes to the modular aperture ratio of ~80 %. Although this efficiency is far behind that of conventional inorganic solar cells, the plastic solar modules are expected to create new energy market into which the inorganic solar modules could not make inroads. In the near future, the plastic solar modules can be integrated with consumer electronics that should overcome the regulation of energy consumption. For this application, the polymer solar cells should be fabricated in a variety of module shapes, which can be resolved by employing conventional and/or advanced coating and molding technologies of plastics products. In this tutorial, the fundamental aspect of polymer solar cells will be briefly introduced and then recent trends in terms of materials and devices will be reviewed together with showing recent results in organic nanoelectronics laboratory.

Implementation of MPEG-21 DIA Utility Software for Stereoscopic Video Adaptation

  • This paper presents recent works of the development of MPEG-21 DIA utility software as one of MPEG-21 activities. The main purpose of this work is to make integrated utility software for DIA C/C++ modules in a Java framework. To do this, JNI plays a role of the interface of a main module with C/C++ DIA adaptation modules. Furthermore, DIA and DID parsers are integrated to the utility software. Our software is designed such that all DIA modules are easily integrated. A variety of adaptation modules have been adopted in MPEG-21 standard. Among them, stereoscopic video conversion that is one of DIA adaptation modules is chosen and we show that our utility software is correctly implemented based on experiments.

The Packaging Technology Thermoelectric Generator (열전모듈을 이용한 발전기의 패키징)

  • A simple and compact type of thermoelectric generator was developed as the energy saving system using waste hot water and low temperature waste heat sources. Sixteen of Bi-Te thermoelectric modules were packaged in series for thermoelectric conversion system using hot water as heat source. The thermoelectric generator shows the power output of about 4.5 W with the temperature difference of about 75 K at 40 $\Omega$ and 0.35 A for the electrical resistance and current of the used thermoelectric module, respectively.

  • We did the blooth module test as a pre-test of wireless sensor monitoring system, which for the improving of on-condition maintenance reliability, on the train. In this test, we examined the communication environment of wireless sensor monitoring system by the acceleration date and frequency date in the real train structure during the operation. Also based on this results, we did the experimental verification of the sensor power system which use piezoelectric energy conversion technology by the theoretical modeling for the applying on the train on-condition maintenance.

  • This paper deals with some critical activities of CAPP system such as generation of part description database, part feature recognition, process and operation selection, and sequencing method for turning operation of symmetric rotational parts. The part description database is generated by data conversion module from CAD data, and the part feature is recognized by using both pattern primitives and feature recognition rules. Machining processes and operations are selected based on machining surface features and its sequence is determined by rules acquired from process planning expert. AutoCAD is employed as CAD system and computer program is developed by using Turbo-C on IBM PC/AT compatible system.

  • In this paper, a 300[W] class boost type single-phase inverter system which can compensate voltage sag on source side is designed and implemented. This system is a two-stage conversion system composed of a boost converter and a PWM inverter. If the voltage sag has appeared at the point of common coupling, the boost converter would be operated to compensate it. The boost converter and the inverter were constructed on single smart power module(SPM) to implement low cost system. The system is designed for that the THD of output voltage is below 5[%]. Finally, the validity of the design for the inverter system is verified by both simulations and experiments.

  • This paper aims to DNC application of car seat cushion die. DNC systems are consist of CAD(CATIA1, CAM(Z-MASTER, OMEGA) software and CNC milling machine. CAM software is purpose to G-code generation for CNC programming. Then CAM software and CNC milling machine are connect to RS-232-C cable for networking.

  • A strain gauge weight measuring instrumentation system was designed with RF sensor network facilities. In the sensor module system data conversion and a series of signal processing were totally equipped. 16 strain gauges are incoming sensors and each output of the strain gauge was amplified and filtered for proper analog signal processing. Several measuring instrumentation OP amps and general purposed OP amps were used. 12 bits A/D converters converted analog signals to digital bits and a PIC microprocessor controlled the 16 channels of strain gauges. RF RS232 modules were used for wireless communication between the PIC microprocessor and an Ethernet host far a remote sensor monitoring system development.

  • In this paper, an operating characteristics of a 50 kW gird-connected photovoltaic(PV) power system was analysed from 2000 to 2004. The construction of the PV system includes a 3-phase inverter for grid connection, PV module, distribution box, and data monitoring system. The major results of the demonstration test of the 50 kW class gird-connected PV system showed that efficiency of PV system was 11.13%, and the conversion efficiency of the inverter was 92% at a 50% load.
