  • As tilting train is the effective solution to provide faster passenger service on conventional railway lines without too costly modification of infrastructure, it is expected that tilting train will be put into service for Korean conventional Railway Lines. Very few passengers may suffer from motion sickness on conventional train and high speed train. But some sickness among passengers of tilting trains have been reported. Up to now, a standardized motion sickness index was mainly developed in the shipping domain. Therefore, there was a need for railway motion sickness index in order to predict and evaluate the motion sickness which is likely to be experienced by passengers. This paper is the preliminary investigation to propose the technical index related to motion sickness and nausea phenomena for the tilting train development and operation.

  • High speed and large transfer capability of railroad has been an important issue in Korean since KTX opening at 2004. Improvement projects for railway electrification are progressed in the conventional line as well as high speed line because various operation plan is performed such as interaction between high speed line and conventional line and operation of tilting train etc. Especially, railway electrification has many advantages which are cost effective and eco-friendly. But it also has some problems such as construction costs and accidents due to electrification. Therefore this paper developed measuring index of electrification railway benefit. By comparing between diesel and electrical locomotive, the operations of before and after the electrification and measurements quantitative index such as energy efficiency, enlargement of transfer capability, environmental pollution and maintenance and efficiency of operation is presented. In the future, Overall benefit and cost of railway electrification will be analyzed.

  • Gyeong-bu railway line in Korea between Seoul and Cheon-an was built as two double tracks. A four-display signaling system, only for the metro line, was installed on the second double track so KTX and conventional trains can only operate on the first double track. This study suggests a method to allow KTX and conventional trains operated on the five-display signaling system to respond to accidents and track defects on the second double-track under the four-display signal system by means of problem analysis, calculation of breaking distances for KTX and conventional trains at each break mode, and improvement of the ATS system.

  • In this study, field measurements on KTX, Nuriro and TTX train have been conducted at Kyeongbu and Honam line to predict the wind gust under train at the speed-up of major conventional railway lines using Kiel-probe array and multi-channel pressure scanning system. The results show that the average wind velocity during train passage normalized by train speed is independent to train speed, thus the wind gust for a given train type at the speed-up condition could be predicted. The relationship between the shape of underbody and the characteristics of the underbody wind gust has been discussed.

  • When high speed train runs on heavy curvature section of conventional line, squeal noise emitted from the railroad and wheel. This noise is very unpleasant to the near habitant. In this study, the characteristics and the countermeasures of the squeal noise of high speed train running on the conventional line was investigated.

  • This Paper describes a characteristics of wheel wear of high speed train running on the conventional line. Conventional line has many curved tracks that cause severe wheel flange wear. The influences of lubrication, cant deficiency, owe radius on wheel wear are also described considering the operation performance of the highspeed trainset. A method of calculation using contact patch work model is presented far determination of the evolution by wear of railway wheels.

  • Tilting train is the best solution to provide faster passenger service on conventional railway lines without too costly modification of infrastructure. Kinematic envelope gauging is very important when applying tilting trains % conventional railways with limited clearance. Due to tilting motion, the kinematic envelope of tilting train is larger than that of non-tilting train. This study was done to estimate the maximum dimension of tilting train being suitable for Korean conventional lines. In this study the two worst cases of tilting train movement was assumed and related suspension displacements, geometrical overthrow of train on une, wear of wheel & rail were combined to determine kinematic envelope.
